1.The largest airplane in the world ever built, the H-4 Hercules, a hydroplane in fact, made its first and only flight on a day like this in 1947 in Long Beach Harbor, California. The project was conducted and hosted by millionaire Howard Hughes, a successful Hollywood film producer. He founded the Hughes Aircraft Company in 1932 and, in 1939, took control of the airline TWA. The H-4 Hercules was commissioned from Hughes by the US government after the country entered World War II (1941) to transport equipment and more than 700 soldiers over long distances. Also called "Spruce Goose," the plane had enormous dimensions: its distance from wing to wing was 97.5 meters and it was driven by eight giant propellers. Its cost was also salted: $ 23 million.
