Heh. I almost never look at the Trending page. I learned that awhile ago and have been here a little over a month. I use the feeds feature so I can catch stuff from people I am following, but I also try to spend a bit of time in NEW so I can give new people a chance. I try to follow new people that are interesting. If I'm really not seeing anything I might look at HOT, but honestly I rarely need to go outside of NEW and FEED. When they finally make it to where we can subscribe to certain tags I'll likely be checking anarchism, and such regularly as well, but most of the anarchism stuff is preaching to the choir with regard to me at the moment. It is a great opportunity to expose other people to it though.

Hang in there.... It is beta and they still need to do a lot of work on discover ability. I checked and we are at about 76,000 subscribers. Can you imagine how hard this place would be to navigate if they were at double or triple that number. They definitely need a way to be able to sift through the quantity of material. Subscribing to tags will let you make sure not to miss the things you generally like, and then if you check NEW every so often you might find things you didn't know you liked.

Yessir I totally agree that for interesting reading New is where it's at on Steemit, other than the Feed page of those I've chosen to keep up with. It's probably the best place to find articles to upvote before the whales and bots find them for that matter. Facebook (and Google) have built in algorhithms that constantly feed you more of what it thinks you like based on past behavior (things you've liked, stories you've already read). As tens of thousands more people join, the diversity of Steemit is sure to be off the charts.

When you are on the place where it shows Comments, Replies, etc. Here I made you a screenshot.

You can also get to it by clicking on your avatar in the upper right that is next to SUBMIT A STORY and click on FEED in the menu that pops up.

This will show you only articles from people you are following.

@dwinblood wow, I had no idea the site looked like that. :^)
Seriously, I always customize the PC colors so my window backgrounds are dark grey.
I like the text to be a light grey. This way the monitor isn't pumping bright light in my face, and since I work in a dark room, it helps with my eyes adjusting.
Problem is; changing the PC's colors WIPES AWAY things like the blue bar, the white bar at the top.... my screen is ALL dark grey, just pics and text.

I also stay pretty much in the NEW and FEED section. I have found many great posts and followed a lot of people who had interesting thing to say. I run through the trending once in a while, because it is the default, but i haven't seen anything exceptional on there. Mostly whale/dolphin orgies. Like I said to Barry, mental masturbation.

How about forget Trending and look at your own feed as well as category pages that interest you?

Front page Trending is a sort of least common denominator and absolutely isn't for everyone.

Also, unlike some other sites you can look at other people's feeds. So if you know of someone who shares your interests you can take a look at their feed to find new authors or posts to read or follow yourself. Hope this helps. Thanks for being here writing @barrycooper!

You can read some of my stuff, if you're not happy with the trending content. I write about my relationships with coffee farmers and my start-up business working with them in Costa Rica. I sprinkle in some posts about anarchism and political philosophy. There's a two-part series about the time I torched a rental car while in Costa Rica. That story is a fun read. I use pretty much all of my own photos in my posts as well.

If you're bored, check it out. I always appreciate feedback on the subject or the writing style.

You might not read the good posts on Steemit ;) I've never seen such good content in Facebook.. Steemit is beast, but looking into trending is not necessary meaningful i suggest you find the good authors and follow them ;)

On Facebook I subscribe to science, philosophy and other mindful pages. I have a steady diet of tutorials, videos and quick reads that teach me a lot. I also have a pile of funny and witty content constantly arriving in my newsfeed. I'll start looking for authors here that I like. I already have a few but I was expecting more. Thanks for the tip. I guess I am retarded....lol.

Yeah... Seems only a few styles of articles will ever "trend" (boobs, or all praise steemit), or certain bankable authors, that people only vote for so they can cash in on the curation reward...

I've seen a few different things cycle. It does seem to be in clusters though. Also a lot of it is because some people are in the feeds of whales or whale bots so their stuff is instantly up voted before anyone possibly could have ever read it. :)

The simple way Steemit is currently presented is like facebook but only being part of one boring friend's wall. I have my own feed (Steemit's equivalent to facebook's wall) here but if I find an interesting person or group on facebook I can see their wall and maybe find more interesting stuff. But not here...

I think the trending articles aren't really the best, they do have the most votes, have to figure that out. But I have found very interesting material in posts which have very few votes, and I do think the value of the posts here on Steemit is way superior to Facebook.

Overtime you will find more authors writting the kind of content you like and then you can follow them and they will be in your feed. If you are into Science @alexbeyman has written some really good stuff!

The interface is simply not ready yet. Maybe it will be possible to subscribe to certain streems only and get better filters one day, such tools must inevitably come. Until then the user experience will be... limited.

Hey Barry, Damn you got me to read this blahblah. Your trap to get us all to click Steemit has only 50k people and it took FB years to grow. Be patient! I like some of your articles and think you are valuable and quite awesome for this community of stoners but I don't think its necessary to make fun of other peoples efforts. I am a horrible writer, a much better reader but nobody will stop me to post whats worth to express in my own way. "Like it or not " as I think! I hope nobody gets discouraged reading your sarcastic thoughts. You should get another joint, chill and do it all. Facebook and whatever but take more time , stay off the trending section.Go to your feeds and follow interesting Steemians. I am sure you will find amazing people and their touching, honest stories and maybe the right smoothie for today :)

I keep my limit of 5000 dedicated fans on facebook and have em stacked in line anytime an opening comes. I get over 50 fan emails per day. I'm not concerned one bit about that. There does seem to be a lot of mental masturbation going on, especially about steem and steemit. You have to look at the new section to read anything new. There are great articles to browse if you stay away from the trending or hot sections. Articles on homelessness, art, some awesome stories on travel and peoples countries of origin. I only post steemit stuff to fb and havent gone on there in a while because I'd rather have steemit then a steaming pile like fb. Keep the peace rollin and smoke a joint for me, I just moved to the bible belt.

I don't think you are retarded. Try skimming the new publishes or good writers you dig and follow on your feed. I know what you mean about the trending section sometimes though, it seems it's often the same 10-20 people everyday at the top. For now, I'm not looking to monetize, and certainly don't have dubious and wrong intentioned schemes to get rich quick. I just dig original content, whether fiction, non-fiction, philosophy, art; exposure to something besides the endless political tirades and kittens I see on Facebook. But I've enjoyed the feedback as I've only begun writing again and it feels good to put it out there. I like the community building and feedback from people. We can inspire one another. @barrycooper - DON'T GO! You're one of the few that I truly enjoy reading...and FB, while it's fun (hey, I even got an email that said Candy Crush misses me), you'll never make a penny there. Anyway, I'm about a month old here and I rarely look at what's trending because many of them are there because they've had time to generate an audience. If you've noticed, some of them are over a month old.

The few active people I have on my feed are people whom I've connected with because Steemit is, at its core, still another social media platform. And while I don't have a big following, I've noticed an increase of followers in my other social media outlets.

Keep looking. There is good material out there. Purely subjective, of course, but content creators would LOVE to know what their readers are in to because they really want to build an audience and may start gearing their writing/art/video to satisfy them. Maybe in a future post, you can share that nugget of information. You may be surprised by the results. :)

If you are like most people, you spent a lot of time "like"ing stuff on facebook, commenting on the interesting stuff and so on.
Your facebook feed is your preferences, manipulated by the facebook SJW goons with poison pills for badthink. And with your preferences sold to the advertisers to try to target you for what they think you'll have a chance to buy.

Steemit's trending is solely by the posts the people with steem power have voted up. If it sucks to you, its because people with a lot of steem power now are not in line with you. Maybe you'd rather see titties and anarchy, it really doesn't matter. get Steem power by the millions, you can play the trending game.

But you can build your steemit feed to be like your facebook feed, then go to http://steemit.com/@barrycooper/feed instead of the homepage.

As I'm sure you can tell, there's a lot of hope that trending content will improve. That said, the type and tone of criticism you make here is the kind that will guarantee Steemit does improve. The most successful writer I know took one look and said "nope." Now that person will be less likely to join than had they not seen the trending page. For writers like me, it doesn't matter what trends. However, as Steemit comes more and more into the public eye, the quality of what trends will be what makes or breaks its reputation. The community benefits from someone influential and light-hearted making a case for quality from the standpoint of a reader. Smart. Helpful. Keep pushing us to do better. Every one of us can benefit from setting high standards for our posts. Thank you for your honesty!

If people continue to come here and cash out easy rewards the value of SBD is going to crash.

I had to make the comment somewhere.
I have no problem with anybody cashing out, it is, after all, the ultimate point of the platform.
I'm just asking that you put your rewards into steam power and take them out over the two years.
If most of us do that it will not only grow our influence in relation to the whales it demonstrates to investors that we are serious about becoming the king of content.
I don't see where I accused you, Barry, perhaps the knee jerk was your own?
