Steemit Needs Series: Please comment with your ideas to improve Steemit!! | E. 17 | Sept. 2nd, 2017 | Community Engagement | Archives to help Developers / Community.

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hi again everyone! I am keeping my word to keep the series going!

I would like you to comment with your visual aids or written ideas of what you think Steemit can use to improve the Community for features and why.

Comments sections here are GOLD as we know, some great TIL learning and tips usually pop up too here.

Part of the reason I do this series and share other things / series I do, is for the TON of new people coming to Crypto and Steemit daily, I mention this daily in a post or comment somewhere.

They need help and resources. They feel lost when they are Steemit / Crypto noobs. I know I did.

Comments sections are great learning places for all of us -- but new Crypto folks especially.

It's now several weeks or so after the latest big changes, the latest Hard Fork (HF) / the Steem Powering downs latest rounds, many of those cashouts done and seeing some stabilizations, some bugs fixed etc.

The rewards pool is seeing a lot of changes again.......

Views, Spam, Engagement & Meaningful Comments:

Views and engagement still seem to be down and that is why I try to do so many posts / series to BOOST engagement.

The last while I have been wondering if it simply because we have so many accounts here now.

I was the first person to blog that I am aware of - of us crossing the $300k account mark recently here. The other part of me is thinking -- how many of those are just bots because that is a rising problem?

And if there ARE that many accounts.... one might think the comments section would be growing exponentially with all our posts too, right?

Spam and spammy comments are one of the biggest topics now every single day in the community here and many of us are struggling with it, and how to deal with it.

It's OK to gather new ideas but if the same issues pop up, that is great too, because it will send the message that something is more important to the developers and Steemit Elders. My goal is again - use this blog post as a resource to help the dev's and the community members. I can combine them into one post later on if needed to help developers or members.

It is easily searchable also -- as I use the same key phrases / words etc. in the title to keep it searchable - more easily.

I was trying to pick good tags...... I decided to use the TIL or HOWTO tags -- hoping someone either looking FOR help on learning something -- or someone looking TO help on these things would comment! I thought about that one for a couple mins.

If you want to tag people or share it so others can comment and contribute also, that is great. I have my own ideas and see a lot of people talking about it, but as someone who is NOT - I REPEAT NOT! tech savvy like many of you, and who is relatively newer to the Blockchain and Crypto stuff, I know my role is limited to give ideas, I am just a Fat Minnow LOL.

But I have been an activist for years, I am used to building community and gathering info and trying to help so I guess you can blame the activist side of me for this idea which I think is a good one -- an INTENTIONAL POST on the idea, to gather stuff in one place and be easily searchable and findable for all the IT types and developers etc.

Just my way of trying to contribute. I did not even know for sure what tags to use in this post, and I actually spent 5 mins looking and researching the best ones in the past to try and use, before I posted this LOL. I will edit the tags ASAP if you give me better ones to use!!

Noobs can find the TIL or HowTo tags and nuggets here helpful, as I mentioned earlier here.

If we can get some good feedback going, we can use these ideas, all in one place and people can refer back to them. That's why E.1 / E.2 /E.3...4/5/6/7/8/9, etc etc - was in the title, I am hopeful it is helpful as a resource.

We must always head towards the path of Liberty. And help others on this path.

Thanks for doing this, Barry.
I believe this would be a game changer for minimising spam.
(Past payout)

Matty, thanks for coming by man.

I am trying to remain caught up AMAP here but the struggle is real dude.

I know you know what I mean!

Accounts

In regards to the growing number of accounts. I wonder just how many are non-english speaking. As such then we get very little if none at all of those.

The spammers every time I check out their page and when they list a country English is not their main langue for that country. So that just makes you wonder then if just other sections of Steemit are growing while we are not so much

This week I expect it to be rather slow. School is back in so everyone is off dealing with that. It sure felt like a slow week from the amount of views or it could just me be.

Spam

I still would like to see some tools to combat spam. I can’t think of anything that would be fair or work well for the platform we are on. It seems their vetting processes for free accounts needs some harder measures of some shorts just to keep these people from getting in.

I do wonder what amount of people even being active are humans vs bot/bot like behavior.

YAHH

So you keep spamming posts with the same GIF's and short no use comments that you have done for the last week or 2, even though I have brought this to your attention and the reasons why @ridwant??

Good points as always.

I am going to pay attn this week to see how the back to school week affects things here.

There is so much spam coming from the non-english speaking community in various / general ways, it has been draining.

Literally -- in various ways. I know you know what I mean, you have been on this cause.

#WarOnSpam

it would be great if steemit started its own exchange or as always asked for a steem debit card linked to several currencies. The accounts are growing due to people having several to many accounts each to hide the way they behave. I am sure we have a lot of new users too, and that is real growth. Surely we should be closing accounts when many are operated by one person. The withdrawals some of them come from accounts set up by major whales to hide their real actions in selling off. We could use a steem search that is not local and not google and steemit groups to hang out with like mined users. I have many other ideas too. thanks for your post

I'm Agree

Thanks for commenting!!!

Great ideas!!

We need love and patience xd, and a inbox, you know, private messages between authors.

It's true

Good points...

The PM's / direct PM is a common one for sure,

Thanks for commenting!!!

excellent post, I love what you are really doing a great greeting @ joserc.vzla

I'M Agree

Many thanks!!!!

In any social media, there will be always spammer. And the culture need to change. One of my suggestion was to the guys who are at the top, should create a trend to upbring good content, by upvoting newer posts which have quality.

I am not a creative person, and so far I have not been able to post great content. So I have decided to invest and also working to bring people who are creative and promote them. I think, at least this way, I can add values to the platform.

For a little while #waronspam was a thing. To help try and deal with spam and to show people how to do things better.

There are a couple of tags out there just created to help people get noticed. Issue is those get spammed as well.

People even use them when it’s not for them. This site just requires good old fashion networking to get seen. Even the more open places for that get flooded so things get missed.

There are a few curtail groups that go around looking for good content to promote and you often see some of vets taking people under their wing and helping get their content more visible.

There is just an amazing amount of wonderful content out there. Takes a while to get noticed. Sometimes things work out other times not.

Thanks for commenting!!!

Good ideas, you just have to keep trying and learning and seeing what works.

My advice: Learn how to format the pots, with just 3-4 basic things learning the Markdown tricks, for formatting -- follow the link in your "compose" window area -- where it says Markdown.

It will help you learn tricks quickly.

Hello Barrydutton! I think is a great idea to gather as much information in a few different post in order to help the community. I been thinking about how to make Steemit better as well and some times, it can seem to be a difficult task, for just one person, but when we can share our thoughts and prayers our minds together, new ideas can surface that will help the community. My concern lately is that a lot of people only want to fallow and comment on accounts that are of high value. Even when good honest people may be trying to contribute something meaningful to Steemit, they are no seen any incentive rewards, because they may be new and the value of their accounts are low. Sure, while time passes and people make more post the accounts will increase it's value, but without the help of us all, only those who have a lot of SP will be fallow by people with high SP and not notice or care about the little guys because of their account value. Upvoted and Follow!

Great points.

I personally try to help new people every week with votes and comments/suggestions myself.

Thanks for commenting!!!

How about the ability to host files on steemit? Like for example, if I want to offer my ebook or mp3 for download, I can just say "click here to download my file" and the user will just be able to download it without having to go to a different web site.

That's a good idea actually. There is file hosting so to speak but done thru the Amazon servers we pay for as the Steemit community.

emmm.

There ought to be a system that bans accounts that constantly spams. This is a disease to the steemit community. It destorys credibility to the system.

Agreed.

First thing: Policing. This place needs to have SOME authority from somewhere. Perhaps a vote system? Not sure but guys that spam and flag people to death are killing the platform.

Valid spam flagging and warning, I have no issues with.

Spam is killing the platform, not the TRUE concerned, balanced people who flag and warn people who spam all day long.

It's brutal.

I agree Spam is annoying and should be nipped at the bud, but I also believe Steem needs to become more liquid.

Right now even if you power down, there is no where to exchange them. Poloniex and Hitbtc are both suspended, I have not looked further yet, but where is the value of Steem when you can not exchange it. Please excuse the link:

Have you looked into @blocktrades here?

He is an early investor here and pretty active helping people.

www.blocktrades.us

No but on it now... greatly appreciate the reference!
Looks so much easier!

OK I tried it with Steem and it was so much better than exchanges... direct to my coin account... Thanks So Much!

Dan and @blocktrades are pretty good and their C/S is very good, always very responsive.

I was glad to recommend them.... and more pleased how happy you are, good work man!!

Bots are perennial problems everywhere on the internet. I doubt that any failsafe method to remove them will be found, but we can mitigate their numbers by weeding them out on a daily basis.

I am new to the Steem community but it seems there needs to be a more robust way for users to identify or at least report suspected bots, and some sort of SteemPolice to respond to them and take them out.

Thanks for the article. I upvoted it and followed you. Feel free to follow me back.

Thanks for the comments today!
