From potato-brain to Steemit-brain - An idiot's guide

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

Since joining Steemit, something changed inside my mind. When @giantbear first tried to recruit me to join here, I had a look at the FAQ’s and it looked like Rocket Science to me. I was in the middle of studying for exams at that moment so the day after the last exam, I sat and read through it all, not knowing what I was looking at. @giantbear and I go way back (11years to be exact) where we were teachers at the same school, we formed a friendship and managed to keep in touch all these years, so I trust her completely. She sent me an e-mail and the first thing she wrote there was:

Create an account and take a few days to read other people’s posts.

So that’s what I did! It didn’t take me a week before I got the picture. When I was ready to do an Introduction post, she didn’t even need to guide me because she gave me easy-to-follow instructions in the e-mail.

My first post didn’t have a picture and although I knew how to upload one, I just didn’t really think it was necessary. When I look back now, I can’t believe I didn’t have a picture! No picture, Belinda, really???

For months into Steemit, I am now comfortable with many things that were unfamiliar to me at first. Before Steemit, I never even knew about the existence of Bitcoin, Blockchains, Cryptocurrencies and all that very popular Steemit topics, but at least now I am able to say that I’ve learned the basics. Can I make a useful conversation out of it? Hell no, but I can damn well tell you that it makes better sense to me now than it did before.

The very first thing I said to @giantbear was: “But I’m not a writer!” and I rolled my eyes at her when she told me that she knows I can. I find it pretty hard myself to get people to join Steemit and it’s mostly for the same reason as my excuse…”But I can’t write!” I’ve learned that it gets easier as you go, like learning to ride a bicycle.

Is it the fear of learning something new or the fear of change that keeps us from exploring new things that scare us?

What’s changed inside my mind is that I see a story in almost everything now. I find myself thinking about what to post next during a visit to the mall, a trip to the beach and especially wile washing dishes – that’s like an idea creator right there – dishes! What irritates the hell out of me is when I’m in bed and can’t sleep, for some reason I can write a post in my mind from start to finish and the next morning, IT’S GONE! Poof! Just like that. There is no way to recollect what I was thinking about by the next morning. What I also did was to make a mental note out of it: “Okay, Belinda, remember now, tomorrow you are posting about socks. Socks! Remember! Socks!”…nope, it didn’t work! Vanished! The next morning I can kick myself for not getting up and writing it down the night before.

Seeing as I’m still new-ish at Steemit, I feel like I still need to prove myself as worthy so to me it’s very important to write from the heart and to do a good job at it. I don’t want to write a load of crap and risk damaging my own, personal, non-Steemit reputation (if that even makes sense). I’m happy to grow here on my own time and I’ve come not to despise the “Trending” pages anymore – they usually gave me heartburn! I feel happy about my progress and I’m thankful to @giantbear every day for introducing me to Steemit or I might not have gotten the chance to lay my egg here every day.

I’m proud to say that I am now the person who helps others (those that I’ve recruited myself) with finding their feet here on Steemit, but it’s because I’ve had such an awesome Steemteacher that I’m now able to teach others.

This is my “last night while laying in bed” post. I actually got up and wrote it down!

@bdmomuae, I experienced the same start up pains you just described. I am however still experiencing some of them!! How do you overcome the fear of writing a post that no one upvotes or read? Luckily that has not happend yet but I fear the day as my writing skills are not what it should be! I am however with you that at least at this stage I can help the real newbies to Steemit and I can explain the question Where does the money come from?? !! Keep on Steeming!

Yup, that's a tough one and I think many people fear it. (Except for those with the big bucks, lol)
Thanks for reading @marcel1965

Thank you @bdmomuae. I am one of those you recruited, and you are always there to help, you helped me a lot already.

Great advice to just read first. Have you done your socks post yet?

Haha, unfortunately, I haven't thought about anything "sock" to post yet.

It's not that easy. Socks are not that interesting usually. 😃 😄 😁 😆 😅
