Steemit Meetup with witness @Yabapmatt and Team Philly!

My first Steemit meetup turned out awesome!

Hi, my name is Mello (@mellofello) and I am part of Team BeeYOU. My initial thought regarding a Steemit meetup taking place in the Philadelphia area was “meh, I don’t know if I wanna go.” I was not fond of the idea of merging my real life with Steemit life. As the event date grew closer though, my buddy Andy (@AndyKapps) convinced me that we should go and check it out. We devised an escape plan of course, in case the event was boring or uncomfortable. The code phrase was “hey, we need to catch our train,” which was not entirely untrue, but adjacent to the truth depending upon the time.

We arrived around 6:30 PM. I was a little nervous since mingling with new people is not my forte. I entered the bar with an open mind and the first thing I saw put me at ease. A cat laid cozily in front of a fireplace. Now this is how you relax on a cold winter evening.

I looked up the steps and saw a hand written sign that displayed “STEEM”. I thought to myself, “hmm… classy!” I walked up the stairs and recognized Dan (@hypnopreneur) from his promotion post about the event. We signed in and filled out our name tags and thus began our evening.

The entire second floor was booked for our event. The temperature was a tad bit chilly but the space displayed some memorable characters. Rustic industrial exposed brick walls, a pool table without balls, old fashioned bar stools and bench seating, a saloon style double as the bathroom entrance, and dim amber lighting set the lounge-like ambiance for my first STEEM meetup.

Now it was time to dive in and mingle. I am horrible with names so forgive me as I will mention less names than the number of people that I met.

My first conversation was with Dan, the organizer of the event. He was a laid back guy who made me feel welcomed immediately. We discussed past meet-ups and future event sites.

The next few conversations scratched the topics of AI, cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, the coin market, and of course the attraction of Steemit. Everyone embodied a calming positive excitement about the opportunities of the STEEM blockchain.

After a brief refreshment break on the first level where the bar resided, I walked back up and recognized Matt (witness, @yabapmatt).

What happened next turned my night from pretty good to great.

We discussed his journey into crypto, STEEM, Steemit, open source development, Utopian, voting bots, witnessing, and proper Steemit etiquette. Matt was a humble coder who saw a problem, investigated it, and resolved the issue for himself. He created an extremely popular tracking tool for monitoring voting bots and unintentionally gained massive influence of the bot market. His success of that product lead to becoming a witness for the STEEM blockchain. He takes this role seriously and strives to learn the deeper details of the technology. I was impressed by how humble and down-to-earth Matt was. He is knowledgeable, helpful, and cared about the prosperity of the Steemit community. I really enjoyed my conversation with him and hope we can continue in the near future. Andy and I would love to pick his brain with tech talk.

I also met a sport contest host, @steaknsteem, that I regularly play. He is a funny dude. We joked about all the current sport contests and hosts and he gave me the inside scoops to which are the best ones to devote my attention. We also talked about the lessons learned from his Steemit journey. I received some nuggets of information.

Time flew by fast and the next thing I knew it was nearly 9:00 PM. I truthfully had to go catch a train. I really wanted to catch the next 10 PM train but that would mean skipping putting my kid to bed and being fatigued the next day at my day job. I made the responsible decision and said my goodbyes.

Thankfully, Andy took a sweet snap of Matt and I before we parted ways. He graciously offered to help us with questions or support. I couldn’t help thinking, “this is a really good guy.” These are the kind of people we need as witnesses.

I had a huge smile on my face on the ride home. The SteemitPhilly meet-up did not turn out as I expected at all; actually, I didn’t have much expectations to begin with. I was hoping it wouldn’t be boring. I ended up having a great time and truly enjoyed mingling with other Steemians. This circles back to the a theme that I often take for granted. Life is about people and experiences. They are what makes it so spectacular. Life can we great; it’s all about how you chose to look at it.

This joy made me think about my Newbie Resteem Initiative, #newbieresteemday, that was co-founded by @davemccoy and @mudcat36, and how it would be so cool to have our own meet-up.

Our members work so hard to engage and support new users and recently celebrated our 2 month anniversary. Maybe the big one-year anniversary should be a meet-up of some sort. I realize that it would be difficult to organize an event where people would come from different parts of the world. The Philadelphia meet-up was much more manageable for me as it was within a one-hour radius.

When I finally arrived home at 10:45 PM, I could not stop talking about the fun that I had and the people I met. Excitement flowed through me and I wanted to record it on paper, but daddy duties came first. By the time my day wound down, I was exhausted and fell right asleep.

I woke the next morning with the same grin on my face. Thank you @hypnopreneur, @yabapmatt, @andykapps, @steaknsteem, and the entire SteemitPhilly group for making my first STEEM meet-up a memorable one. I can’t remember that last time I went out on a weeknight since I became a father, but I am grateful for attending. See you all next time.

I want to reiterate that this is a really good post. It shows the potential of what can happen here on steemit! It was just a few months ago that your fearless leader was dejected and thought about leaving. Now you can see just a few months later that not only has one beeyou been rejuvenated, but 3.

I think its great that you are also meeting and connecting with a witness. Those are the connections that will be meaningful over time. Who knows, you three might become a powerful team and even be a major here over time. These are the kinds of events that can be pointed to that encouraged it to happen. I highly recommend others to follow your lead.

I agree @davemccoy. Connections and networking are the keys to a good Steemit experience. No one can do it alone. It would be great if we can make positive impacts to the STEEM platform. It would be even greater if we can achieve our goals as a team of 4. ;-)

Agreed @mellofello... Teamwork is awesome on the macro level, but it is even more powerful on a micro level of 4 ;) ... Looking forward to working with your team closer!

I had a great time talking to everyone at the meetup. It's really cool to see the different perspectives of what Steem means to them. As many people mentioned it was fascinating talking some tech with @yabapmatt. He is very open and helpful. I truly felt as I continue my research to find ways to contribute to Steem, I can call upon Matt to help me along the way. And that is a great feeling. So glad I attended.

@andykapps I talked you into joining Steemit, you talked me into attending the meetup. Both with no regrets. We make a great team. I look forward to learning and discovering more about the STEEM blockchain with you buddy.

This is so awesome! Seeing users up close and personal changes everything in interaction! Major kudos for @yabapmatt visiting everybody. I have made three witness votes since joining, one of them is for him, excellent personable guy in only one interaction with me, I couldn't me more impressed! Great work mello!

Thanks @cryptkeeper17. I too have also recently been digging deeper into witnesses and have place some votes. My goal is the share what I find so that voters can have a better idea of who they are voting more. We can't just blindly vote. We have the opportunity to help place the good witnesses into positions where they can drive change. Another great witness that I have recently been in contact is Tim Cliff. If all goes well, I will get some interview time with him.

Great to read about the Philly meetup. I would love to attend one but I’m a very busy dad just trying to keep up with all the stuff in our lives. I know, that statement makes me the total opposite of a cool person you’d probably want at a hip meetup :). I will try to make one someday, but in the meantime I appreciate being to read about them. Hey, I have an idea — any chance you all who’d do one in jersey? I live in Haddon Township, on the speed line, and we have great bars and restaurants!

I know there's a bunch of other Steemit users in Jersey, I guess it depends on how many are close to there and / or how many people from Philly might also be willing to make the trip. Planning a meetup is relatively easy though, making it a success mainly comes down to managing a lot of small details.
I'd be glad to help you work on that if you're serious about. Email me -> [email protected] and we can discuss. Cheers.

I am right there with you in term of being a busy dad. Time is a luxury I cannot afford, but I was lucky that I had sitters for the kids which gave me a few hours to mingle with other Steemians. I truly don't remember the last time my wife and I had date night. Any extra time that we have during our commute to work, during nap times, or after the kids' bed time are spent Steeming. I fee like I have 2.5 jobs, but I am lucky that I truly enjoy all of them.

If I speak with Dan, the promoter of the Philly Meet-up, I will pass along your message about a Jersey meet-up. If there is enough demand, I'm sure someone will host it in Jersey.

so cool to see real life steemians getting together!! there was recently a Boston Steemit meetup but I missed it, unfortunately ! awesome post! Go team! way to bring the #newbieresteemday to the front lines! :)

Thanks @amariespeaks. Everywhere I venture, I mention our newbie initiative. I hope you can make it to the next Boston meet up and share with us your experience. Hopefully you will have a blast.

You should've gone to the meetup in Boston.. I hear there are some big whales in that city. And they will love that red hair, charming personality, and amazing creativity! :)

i knoooowww I was so disappointed I couldn't go but our van broke down I think 2 days before it and we dropped a ton of money on it while my husband tried to fix the thermostat and and rotor or something like that? lol IDK cars I just let him handle it.. but his efforts were for nothing and we were so stressed about it plus having spent so much on it we just couldn't swing a trip into the city :-[ it was very sad because it looked like such fun but limabeing told me if there's another she will let me know first thing

awww that is not so good about your van, is it fixed now or are you still stressed?

and you did good on the car thingys... at least to someone who is also not a car guy (it sounded very professional)... motor and rotor... seems like they would be linked somehow.

its good that you at least know someone who is there, that will help you keep up and get you to the next one!

I hope you got your van fixed and have a nice day marie!

thank you @davemccoy ! it's still dead.. lol bringing it to a real mechanic, a family friend, on Friday so he can determine what the issue is.. hopefully not the transmission or engine - my husband isn't exactly a professional lol but he knows a little but this issue is beyond his knowledge ...
still a little stressed out but there's a light at the end at least! :)
Have a nice day too, boss ;-)

Wow, this is awesome! People in real life give me anxiety, lol but this would be really awesome to do. We don't live far from Philly and I have a lot of family there! That cat would have instantly relieved any fear I had as well. Great work @mellofello and to everyone else who joined!

We would love for you to join us next time. Everyone is really friendly and approachable. We all already have a common bond and the conversations are all centered around STEEM, Steemit, and cryptocurrencies. I say come with an escape plan like I did and use it if needed, but I have a good feeling you won't.

I’d come to a #newbieresteemday party. As long as there’s cake!

806964BE-13CE-439E-BC75-122EFCCA72E0.gif

@pretty.dorky Oh there will definitely be cake! We can’t call it a celebration without cake. Dave will get us a colossal 12 tier cake. Each tier will consist of one delicious flavor representing each month of Newbieresteemday. I vote red velvet for the first tier flavor.

when AnarchoForko Steemers catch wind of this.............................. Agoras will be built in each state. Right?

That would be awesome! As the STEEM platform grows, I can definitely see monthly/quarterly meet-ups organized in every major cities or dense STEEM user populations. Heck, we could even go big and hold simultaneous global events with thousands of live webcam stations for users to connect from one event to other.

Hey Mello, this is very very cool! I think its cool that you guys went to this and even cooler that your shared it! It looked like a lot of fun too!

I know how you feel about being a bit apprehensive to go, I myself feel that way sometimes. But I'm glad you and Andy went. Its the bonds from things like this that make this whole adventure worth it, and I'm happy to see a very good example of how my friends are connecting out there.

So good job and tell @andykapps that I said good job too!

ps... I would love to have a @newbieresteemday 1 year anniversary... If someone takes the time to organize it, you can count me in! ;)

Hey Dave. I can never imagine you apprehensive to any social gathering. You are Mr. Socializer. If I look up the word "socializer" on Wikipedia, I bet I would find picture of you. Hold on though, while I go and update Wiki. LOL.

Sometimes when I least expect things, that's when the best things happen. I learned that I need to remember to keep an open mind for any given situation. The Philly meetup is another perfect example of why I should step outside of my comfort zone to experience new wonderfulness in life.

Now that we both have dropped small pebbles in the #newbieresteemday pond, the ripples of the idea of a 1 year anniversary meet-up will expand and hopefully come to fruition as we grow closer to that mark. Let's circle back at 9 months.

I am looking forward to that meeting... Seeing our teammates and meeting them face to face would be absolutely amazing! I think we might even have a few laughs too ;)

Just a few ... lol

Hey Mello, this is a great recap of the event. Thanks for taking the time to share with the rest of Steem about our small but awesome community. I see big things happening with it in the coming months.
Hope you continue to progress and do well with your Steem activities and that you make it out to future events. Oh and bring more friends! Cheers. :)

Hey Dan, thanks for swinging it by. I was excited to share my meetup experience with my #newbieresteemday group and anyone else interested. I am looking forward to the next one and will come loaded with questions and a little more experience. I am learning fun new things daily/weekly. Hopefully I can convince more new folks to join our little shin dig. Take care.

Its was about $13.75 from the 5 sbd... just so you know how it worked. All done ;)

Mello doesn't know anything about it. (It's the other bee). Thanks Dave. ;)

you can delete if you want ;) But it was a decent return! :D

Putting those sbd's to work... good job ;)

I think only you can delete on your end. Don't mind either or. Yes, agree, very good.
