do-not-plagiarize-916x1024.jpg
Today as i was scrolling through my feed i noticed a post that i thought would interest me, after reading it in its entirety i thought wow this guy is a good writer. I knew immediately the pictures and even the order they were in had been taken from a boredpanda article but i figured its no real harm, the info itself was clearly not from there and it seemed like it had a lot of work put into it.

I was re-reading it and i noticed it had a "source" link under each one so i thought id have a look, low and behold it was a link to Wikipedia and everything was a direct copy paste...

I figured i would tag the original works bot and turns out it deemed it original work. somehow.

I copy pasted the text component into a free plagiarism checker on the net and it came back with 16% original work "most likely plagiarized"

Now when it comes to plagiarism i'm not particularly fussy about photos or even videos so long as you've written your own opinion, your own take or your own perspective on a situation/subject. If its information based then put in the work to inform yourself and actually know what it is your writing about, there's nothing wrong with taking small pieces from say Wikipedia like " The cassowary has 5 inch claws" or "the mantis shrimp is approximately 10cm in length" but when you copy paste entire paragraphs of content and don't actually know anything about the subject itself its just wrong.
You shouldn't just be putting things here to make a profit, you should be writing about things you know about and learning from it yourself too.

I've written posts where i didn't know all the information i put in from past experience, i had to research it from many websites and articles, i read and re-read them over and over so i could pick out the useful information (in my opinion) and put it into my own words, but more so, so i could retain and have that knowledge for myself not just to use it here on Steemit.

There are a lot of people who seem to just post to try and make money and that's fine, after all that is the allure of the platform, but we need to be posting stuff of value for others and stuff that isn't someone else work.

The problem with it is making money without putting in effort, everyone in this day and age wants something for nothing, and i know a majority of the Steemit users don't do this, they put in hours of time to write informative interesting posts that entrance and capture the readers but all it takes is a few bad apples to leave a sour taste.

If you see or notice plagiarism or suspect something has been stolen from someone/somewhere say something or take action.

I commented on this particular post about how it was plagiarized and the poster became a little aggressive and told me "not to involve myself with things that don't concern me, idiot" The problem with that is plagiarism affects everyone. It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow and it may not happen at all, but imagine if someone copied your work and made a few hundred dollars off it. I know i would be annoyed, and we would have every right to.

If you notice someone doing something wrong, flag the post, let them know, tag one of the bots but don't stay silent.

I wouldn't call plagiarism evil but the quote that comes to mind is " The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing"-Edmund Burke

Thanks for this. As an artist posting original content, it can also be tricky to stand out from copied content. My heart sinks a little when I get few or no upvotes and a beautiful piece of concept art that has been 'shared' from another source on the Internet gains a lot of profit which isn't even going to the original creator. It can take me hours to finish an artwork but a single blog can share multiple images each day. I try to make sure I give preference to work that comes directly from an artist on Steemit when upvoting.

thats a good idea. it would be super annoying to put your talent into a piece of art and not receive recognition for it. Are you part of the minnow support project on discord? there are lots of other artists there and it is a good place to get the word out about your work

Brilliant Post! I also Plagiarised too much when I started steemit, But day by day I realized that this is not fair to make yourself appreciate with anyone other's post, now I make my own and good posts. Yes there is no problem to take information from the internet but not also to directly copy and paste it. "Don't edit it with your words, Make it with your words". I Appreciate your post @bigdizzle91

i am guilty of it too in the beginning but now im the same, only put my own work in :)

This problem will always be on the internet.
I hope that it will be reduced but to kill it will be very difficult.

Some of them are truly great.

I find I feel the same about the photo and colour challenges, quite often I find they have just lifted images off Google and have not even sourced them... I find it annoying that they are taking from the reward pool for nothing more than copying and pasting stuff... One of the reasons I do not post very often is because it takes time to make original content and I don't have a lot of time.
By all means used images available on the internet but at least source them, that is basic decency.

if its for a competition or something definetly source them.
I try and post often but it takes time to research and write and format and edit etc and yea agree with you its annoying to see them take from the reward pool for no work.

good post but then when it comes to plagiarism I would say probably something lead to it, imagine writing a post of say 300 words all original from you and getting less than 2 upvotes probably you just joined this platform and really thats not encouraging am not defending these guys, just that they probably want to become popular very fast for writing good post in a field they know nothing about. At the end of the day its still plagiarism my advice would be for them to keep writing their orginal works even though nothing comes out but mind you someone is watching and some day close you would just be suprise on how far you have gone

yea i can understand why they do it but i just dont think its right and writing a good post in my opinion usually comes from your skills and perspective. If you just take info from other places it will be obvious. I think the biggest flag is when someone writes a post in perfect English but their comments are broken English at best. Nothing wrong with not being perfect in English but its such an obvious thing.

Appreciate your input

hahaha just can't stop laughing biggest flaw is comment bad and post perfect well nicely said

Thanks for discouraging plagiarism, @bigdizzle91. Plagiarism is stealing other people's works. This includes photographs, though. I'm not sure why you say using photographer's or individual's images from the web is okay. I always take my own pictures. Why should you get to use someone else's photo just because it's easy to cut and paste it? If you leave your keys in your car, should I just drive it away?

Also, you shouldn't even be stealing short complete sentences from Wikipedia as in your example. That's plagiarism as well.

Hopefully someone will develop a blockchain solution that tracks people's original works better so that people can't just copy and paste for their own gain.

Until then, we should be vigilant and report abuses, and not reward offenders. This will help ensure Steemit's success and good reputation.

because if you take something as simple as " so and so is 10 cm long" there isnt really another way to word it, it is simply the information. there is no way for me to say it other than that.
when i say photograph i mean more of a meme. not go to someones photography blog and steal the photos they use. however when finding a photograph on the internet it can be hard to determine who took it. most blogs or image hosting services dont give credit so there isn't really a way to do it. if you know exactly where its from then sure credit the owner but if all you have is a link that looks like www.imgur.com/image_2369169275 its kind of pointless.
