You be the judge:
A guy was walking to his car after getting some food at a local bagel shop. As he crossed into the parking lot, a homeless gentleman approached him and asked him for a dollar to get on the bus. The guy legitimately had no cash on hand, but he did have a bag of bagels.

Recognizing this, the guy offered the homeless gentleman a bagel. The homeless man said, "Sure!" and the guy told him to take whatever kind he wanted.
The homeless man looked into the bag and spotted a seeded bagel. This particular bagel was the only one of its kind in the bag, and it was a little more expensive than the rest.

The homeless man asked for the seeded bagel, but the guy said that was the only one he had and instead offered a blueberry one. The homeless guy was a little disappointed but took the blueberry bagel, said thank you, and walked off.

Was this an act of kindness for the guy to proactively offer the homeless man a bagel instead of the cash that was initially requested?...
Or was it an act of selfishness because the guy refused to give the homeless man the bagel that he wanted?

Good question. He could have given the guy the bagel with the seeds on it, but in the end, it was his choice. He did give the guy a different bagel, so that was something anyway.

Ah, I think he should have given the seeded bagel away. The only reason I wouldn't have given the seeded bagel away is if I had already promised it to someone else.
I think it was slightly unkind to offer any bagel and then deny the guy his choice. But at the same time, he did still give him something. Good question!

The judgement is entirely subjective and without a legal system to fall back on it really comes down to conjecture, so it's ultimately a bit of both. Offering a bagel instead of cash is a kind gesture and if he wanted to hold on to the bagel the homeless guy wanted maybe he should have specified that on the front end but he also had no obligation to turn over a bagel in the first place so who's to say there's anything wrong with him changing his mind and refusing to make that singular bagel available?
