Will Steemit replace Facebook?

This is unlikely to happen in the next year but how about five/ten years from now?

I believe Steemit’s decentralised structure poses an enormous risk to Facebook. Unlike Facebook, Steemit runs on its own Blockchain-supported currency facilitating a structure that allows content to be rewarded in the form of Steem Power and Steem Backed Dollars.

From a non-technical point of view, the difference between Facebook and Steemit that stands out for me is the way in which the success of the platform is shared.

Facebook was developed by a small group of people and those people alone have gained from its enormous success. The benefits of Facebook are, in my opinion, skewed in favour of the owners.

Steemit is very different. Steemit’s founders set this incredible machine in motion and while they deservedly have gained the most from the success the platform has enjoyed, they have opened Steemit’s bonnet to the world and allowed it to flourish in a decentralised environment.

By doing this, two things are achieved.

Firstly, instead of a small group if people being instrumental in the success of Steemit, everyone can play a part. 100,000 heads are will always be better than ten.

This to me is a much more effective way of building a successful network like Steemit. I can obviously appreciate the success of Facebook and what it has brought to the world but I think Facebook, like so many other social media companies, may be seen as operating under legacy systems at some point in the future. If that time comes, what will they be able to do?

Secondly, everyone can share in the success of Steemit by making their contribution whether it is as an author, a curator, a witness, etc. I don’t see Facebook’s ever being able to do that.

I do think this is very much early days and Facebook is not in any immediate danger, however, it is only a matter of time before users of Facebook and Twitter can’t ignore the rumours of the decentralised world and what it offers.

If my Facebook app could collect dust it would be barely visible at this point. Steemit has a hook stronger than anything that has drawn me to Facebook.

No, it will not, and will never replace Facebook. The two platforms are different. Now if you had asked will Steemit replace Reddit. Who knows only time will tell.

Yes true facebook will always be around but the possibility of people moving to incentive based social media is there. Whether steemit or an as yet developed platform and how that will impact popular social media will be exciting to see.

No it wont and it cant...Facebook drives traffic even when there is no monetary incentive..As of now steemit drives majority of traffic because there is monetary incentive..Privacy cannot be achieved in steemit..Messaging is not possible..In the end there needs certain level of centrallization for social media to exist...What steemit can become is a source of content and a means to seamlessly exchange money in our social circle..

Steemit has ALREADY replaced Facebook, for me!

Likewise, Facebook was easily replaced with steemit for me too!

For just one week, for me too.

@newschool, me too. I just pop in at Facebook for five minutes

Steemit would need to reimagine their user experience which would start with a new and improved user friendly website and even a smartphone app

There is a smartphone app. It's called eSteem. I'm using it as I type. Steem is all still in Beta. Facebook was also at this stage one day. Give it some time. Here's a list of 123 Steem related apps:

SteemTools

All very valid points but Facebook has massive first mover advantage. they have literally billions of people who have signed up. Its pretty user friendly so even my parents can use it!! It would take a massive upset to even get close to Facebooks market penetration!

I think Facebook will still stay for a bit, because of Network-Effect. Furthermore many people are not familiar with STEEMIT, or in general with Cryptocurrencies, yet.
BUT: All contents which really bring value to people will move to reward-Plattforms like STEEMIT. It is just a matter of time.
ON STEEMIT I earn ZERO in the worst case. On Facebook I earn ZERO in the best case.

There may be some comparisons and variance between steemit and facebook or other platforms. One can actually take a position as to both platforms being the same or different in terms of its designs or functionalities. The fact remains that these platforms were designed for information sharing, use, and a whole lot more.

The rivalry between both will arise as a function of which platform users are more interested maybe based on its rewards systems.
However steemit might experience a longer growth and expansion rate if facebook embraces the blockchain technology with similar incentive like steemit, since they already have wider coverage and user base.

Otherwise Steemit would experience a take over of a larger market share of users over time. However the onus is on steemit to develop more features just like @infobunny suggested.

Every platform is unique but the most important is the market share. In conclusion steem would have more larger market share if status quo is maintained by other platforms and steem keep improving and inventing new features and designs, their business model would be the game.

Change is never spontaneous.

Anything is possible....

I don't think any other social media site could replace facebook at this point. A lot of people out there are still not 100% computer savvy and can't grasp the concept of a paid social networking. I tried to get my following on Facebook to sign up for Tsu when it was around and everyone was like yeah whatever I am stuck in my old ways. People are stubborn...

While Facebook might have the user base advantage, Steemit is just a better platform from a technical stand point. I think it will take time, but as time goes on, more and more people will switch. Remember MySpace? Well...

Its all about the gooey GUI....

Once there is more development on how interactions take place, there wont be as much as a learning curve and there may be more options for algo-driven curation based on interests/activity. As long as it stays agnostic and focuses on the end desires of the user, I think that transition could happen naturally.

There would be too many people offended by being labeled a "whale". Thanks again, "skewed sense of social justice as put forth by social media platforms"....

Steemit is a ground floor opportunity . That's why it is worth attention and it will be even better when creators make it more user friendly or go mobile.

Wow. Just found a mobile app for steemit called
eSteem here you can blog, vote and get paid...
Here are links to Google play store and iOS.

Just look how FB looked in 2006! facebook-2006-720x720.png

FB will make up a way to reward its members without losing control. As easy as that

I absolutely agree with you. I've deleted my Facebook-Account about half a year ago because of too much spam, perky advertisement and the massive amount of disinformation.
I'm thankful that i have discovered #steemit a few days ago. It isn't just an alternative but will overrun the social media market in a few years. Till then:
Arrivederci and Steemit!
@ilsignore

I think so bro, at least it's already replaced my facebook! lol
steemit is nice place for give and take, it is built up by everyone's contribution with great and valuable content.

Steemit is like Facebook, Quora, and twitter all combined but better. I wonder if a Youtube function will eventually be incorporated in Steemit?

Excellent post dear friend @bitgeek very interesting and very interesting, everything is possible and can happen and will depend on our actions in great measure, sharing our post in other social networks to spread and invite new users, thank you dear friend for Ocmpartir this work

"If my Facebook app could collect dust it would be barely visible at this point. Steemit has a hook stronger than anything that has drawn me to Facebook."

YES. Me, too, @bitgeek . I have never heard that stated better. Thank you for this article.

Yaaaas. Great read!

No rewards- no customer. I nixed FB a while back because it was like a bad public high school. lol
Love this platform!

Steemit or something similar to it very well could! Exciting times we are living in. I can't wait to see all that blockchain will do

Facebook is garbage, noone sane would use it

Also facebook has a backdoor for all of your personal information to be fed to the NSA, CIA, FBI, and whatever advertisers will pay! On steemit the audience has the power and is the most important. On facebook the audience IS the product sold.

precisely! well said @andrewlarson

there's a lot of crazy people in the world!

Yup, Steemit has the potential. First of all, ad and spam free, steemit gives a life to our feelings ;)
And tbh, facebook has many unnecessary structures which we don't need so much. I, and I am sure anyone who joins it, will continue to use it more than the giant fb.
Upvoted :)

well i can say that steemit will beat facebook , it's the future , the new technology , who doesn't love earning by likes, post, blog and comment ? :D
great reads @bitgeek ;-))

I'm positively sure that mediablockchains like Steem, Golos, Synero, SingularDTV and other will replace old-style social networks... But the questions are: how many of them and witch ones in particular will succeed?

Steem has a huge advantage now - it's first of the kind, as a Bitcoin for Crypto. And the Graphene technology is really good. So I belive Steem has a good chances... But it will not get on top of the hill unchallenged, and that is good

Steemit.com has already replaced Facebook for me. I uninstalled my Facebook last week, I've been on Facebook since 2009 and I've not even made $1

different platfrom haha
different world haha

I hope so. Zuckerberg made enough money: time for the community to share in the wealth.

I think steem will be stronger than FB time to time

It will never replace facebook it is just better than facebook! :-)

Steemit has made a great start but needs to continue to create new features that make Steemit better. Along with The8App it has a great chance.

I'm sure it will! every social media platform is doomed!
steem on! fuck fakebook!

Actually, anything COULD replace Facebook, but let's look at what the requirements would be from a user's perspective;

  1. Ubiquity - Has to be everywhere, or maybe not on day one, but there has to be a clear, believable path to it.

  2. Free to use - Sure, Facebook is Ad supported, a true peer-to-peer system wouldn't be. No on is supporting 'bittorrent' per-se, it doesn't cost anything to push content, download, other than having the required 'bandwidth', and the ISPs carry that, like it or not.

  3. Interoperability - the system would have to be able to work with existing social media and communications platforms, such as text, email, voice, video, forum chats, and of course, the competition.

  4. It has to be trusted - People will use it and trust it, if everything that is posted is traceable back to the originator. That would be a key differentiation. This way, there would be no clandestine government meddling or fake news, it could always be traced down, and flagged by requirement number 5.

  5. It must support reputation scores, and REAL measures of influence, not ones that can be bought to push to the top of the list. And lastly a hard one-

  6. It must enforce responsibility and consequences. If someone gets down-voted enough or their reputation falls to say, criminal levels, they can get muted automatically by anyone who chooses to ignore people with poor reputation scores, and there has to be a long, long road o redemption. (This would imply only individuals could censor, not governments).

If all 6 of those can be satisfied, and provide a PUBLIC face for real sharing person to person, without BOTS, the new social media platform COULD replace Facebook, and the rest of GAFA would also be subject to replacement as well.

Will Facebook try to buy them out?

I've removed the Facebook app, and log in using internet browser. I'm new, so every minute I'm online with steemit, the more I'll learn.

Time will tell what will happen. Maybe it replace Facebook or maybe aliens are among us we are not sure. So I will not worry and just write. I do love coming here to write and post my thoughts here than on Facebook.

Interesting thought but the two sites definitely have a different vibe.
It would be nice if steem could replace facebook. More likely we will see a facebook coin soon...

I don't think Facebook will ever be replaced by something. It has already gained a mass popularity, and during the next 10-20 years... It won't be replaced with anything. Steemit is very different platform, and will gain popularity, and it will run side by side with Facebook.
No point for comparison.
Best wishes!

Steemit still has a long way to go because a friend of mine joined last week and still hasn't gotten her approval.

Hell, I hope so. I can't see why not! Face book sux........ Info gathering weeeezles.

and the steemit system isn't storing everything people say and do on a permanent blockchain that anyone can mine for data? seems to me this place must be gathering a fair bit of info too... am i wrong?

Not at all but as far as I know it's done purposefully on FB for that reason. Can't say it won't be done here in the future but can only hope not.

i like the idea but reckon it will take a big shift in philosophy here - i followed you and upvoted
