My philosophy is that I don't usually upvote my own comments, being an ex-redditor it just feels wrong. But then again if I see a thread full of irrelevant spam, I feel like it helps to upvote my comment so that OP or others can see it easier. I have been flagging a lot of spam of late. Sadly, I still see these spammers and bots continue to operate. But I'm sure the folks at Steemit are taking notice.
I have been meaning to do more research on this, but I do believe being accurate with your upvotes (in terms of what turns out to be popular) gives you greater rewards. Rather than spamming the upvote button everywhere. Which is another reason I don't upvote myself.

On TAG SPAM, I think that there is probably no need for more than 5 or 6 tags at the maximum. If I see a post with a ton of tags in Slack where I get posts from people I FOLLOW USING STEEMWATCH, I just ignore it.

What I find even much worse that the more people are coming "tag-spamming" will get a problem. You can clearly see that in most of top10 topics the same introduction posts for example are inside... I wrote today about it:

I do think that dolphins and whales should upvote their own post. It shows that you have invested in the platform whether financially or through creating great content and in turn investing your earnings into the platform. Those with the most invested stand the most to lose if the platform were to crumble, and in general dolphins and whales tend to post some of the most helpful and interesting content. They also have the ability to dictate a lot of what type of content steemit should be about. I say continue full steem upvote ahead!

I love this post and comments section so hard. Just my .01, I'm not here for the money. Don't get me wrong, I won't turn it away because that's obvs someone showing support and love, but I'm here for the personal investment in the platform and the idea.
Days before I joined Steemit my finger was hovering over the delete account button on fb. I backed up my profile in case I later changed my mind. I haven't had the app for more than a year, and only didn't delete so I could lurk and read articles. I watched some early how-to documents on steemit last week where people were recommending upvoting your posts and replies.
So I did that for awhile, but I talk a lot.
Then I realized our votes have limited power. Each time you vote your voting power is decreases a little bit and this regenerates over time until you are back at 100% voting power.
So if you vote a lot on your own stuff you limit the impact you can have on voting for other content.
In my case my handle is @dwinblood. If I go to http://steemd.com/@dwinblood it shows you in that area to the left what your current voting power is.
I've seen mine as low as 25% before. I have therefore been trying really hard to slow down my voting, and when it comes to myself I vote on a reply I may make if it seems like is buried and might not be seen. I like to dialog and discuss with people, so when I reply I generally am hoping for a reply, even if I don't get a vote.
However, it is really important to know about that voting power and how voting too often heavily dilutes your voting power.
