I'm very unhappy how Steemit cut my photos as thumbnails in the home / feed. So I did a little resource. I cropped from the feed list many thumbnails to see if they were all in the same size and then I could use that as a guide for my photos before I posted them.
What I found out is that there is only a small variation. If you are using PhotoShop or similar program that can show you the image size of a picture, set the wide size to 20 (you can just measure it, don't have to change it) then the height will be on Steemit 11,41 to 11,56.
I have tested this using 11,40 to be on the safe side and Steemit haven't cut anything from the thumbnail. If the height of the picture is more then this, the thumbnail is cut ruffly 2 till 3 from the down side and 1 from the top.
So if you don't want Steemit to cut your thumbnail, but your picture is in another size then 20/11,40, you can put for example white color on both sides of a photo to get 20/11,40 uncut thumbnail or the other way around. But Steemit put gray under and above photos that are in a panorama or similar size and you probably have seen that. In thos cases, you also can see how they put a little more under than above. It's the same with cutting, more from the bottom then above.
Hope this can be of any help.

When you say 20 and 11, 46 et cetera, are you indicating centimeters? IMO it will help to say 20 cm and 11,46 cm (11.46 cm for US persons); I have been sizing photos according to pixels.
If I understand correctly then a photo that has a height of 11,41 cm or above it will be cut to 9,41 cm more or less; but if the height is 11,40 cm it will keep the same height? A 20 cm width is accommodated. Basically for Photoshop, one could use the cropping mechanism measuring 11.40 x 20 and the extra sizing would then be rendered transparent. What pixel per inch would be recommended so the file sizes are not too large?

It doesn't matter. I'm just talking about if you can put in any kind of measurements in your software to see if the photo is in this ratio. But I often use 20 cm as width so I checked that size. It would be better if I would set it up as ratio. Then it would be 10 against 5.7 ore 1 against 0,57.
