Let me start off with pinning the definition of the word follower:
As far as I'm involved, the number of followers is not just a number.
I value each one of my followers just because I believe they are people who admire me and find value in reading what I have to say.
When I think of my followers, I do not think they are people with the easy click.
I do not think they are people who are trying to grab my attention by following me, hoping that I'll be following them back. Does that game even exist anymore? Well if it does, it doesn't work.
I don't do it, I won't follow you if I don't find what you write interesting.
So, I would not want you to do it with me.
I'd rather have 10 curious and engaged followers than 300 ghost followers.
300 followers yet the only ones reading my posts and interacting by either upvoting resteeming or commenting, are always the same 15/20 people.
Let me be clear:
If you followed me just because you were hoping I'd follow you back, then you were wrong. You can unfollow me.
If you followed me because you think I could bring value, do not be passive, don't be shy!

Steemit is an overgrowing platform, within the 5,000 best sites in the whole Globe. This means it's grabbing people's attention and there are many new users coming in every day. Let's help them.
In conclusion I just want to say that I'm not wining about anything, in fact I'm encouraging you to unfollow me.
To my loyal followers, thank you for your support. I really much appreciate it!

Steve, don't get disheartened. I'm only on Steemit a week or so and I haven't read all you have written but what I have read is brilliant. I sometimes sit and read through the old posts of the people that I have found interesting and started to follow. Maybe others do the same. Don't think you have to follow people just because they follow you... I'm totally new and I don't even do that.
On FB I have like 100 friends only... they are people I actually physically have met and are friends with. Here I'm not planning to be different... you read and vote on what u think is interesting! Stay true to yourself but don't feel like everyone who follows you does it for votes. That just takes the fun out of the community. Maybe they are like me... it takes them a while to read through interesting pieces and vote or comment on it.

I appreciate you and your kind words! Thank you very much. I believe that many of us don't understand the meaning of following and a lot thinks it as a way to game the system. In the long run it doesn't matter how many followers you have, you won't be successful if they aren't engaging!
I'd rather have 10 followers that really care!

Solid point. I've seen some users with heaps of followers yet their posts don't seem to get much love and it makes me wonder what's going on there. Why the disconnect?

Exactly what I'm talking about. I'm preventing getting to the point that I have 1k/3k followers and close to null interaction!

I agree with the spirit of your post: quality content and quality interaction!
On the other hand, I suspect it is normal what you have observed. I suspect that the other 300, other than your 10-25 active followers, are NOT just following you in hopes of getting a follow from you. Maybe 10-50 did that.
The others probably DID like something you did, and after all, populating your feed with content you like is sort of part of the many aspects of this community.
Still... Yes... We want to encourage deep interaction here. No doubt...
Best wishes!

"We want to encourage deep interaction here"
Exactly! At least that's how I behave. When I like what people creates I always support them.
Not only the autor feels better as someone is telling him he's doing a great job or something like that, you feel better as well! A kind gesture that doesn't take much of your time. Plus, you establish a connection with that person. Like what you did now @stover.daniel. I will remember you for sure and we might connect in the near future. It's a win-win!
Thanks for your opinion by the way, really appreciated!

Well, i think the ghost followers wont harm you :). They might even helping your blog to get a little bit more attention to get true followers. Consider there are people interested in your content, but not the type of people who like to engage in the comment section as well. Others are only interested in certain topics. So congratulations on 300 followers:)
e.: have to admit the word "ghost followers" sounds a bit scary to people with a lot of imagination ;)

Thanks for your honest opinion @steemboys. You are indeed correct when saying that people might not be interested in some of my stuff but here's an example:
Yesterday night I had 290 followers or so when I went to bed and this morning I had 300.
Where did those 10 people come from? They must of have read one of my post and found it interesting.
None of them interacted with that post tho. That's the point. If you like someone's work, let him know. I personally feel great when someone points out that what I write is valuable for them!

Maybe we can come up with another name instead of ghost follower since all the other descriptions on Steemit are Whale, Dolphin and Minnow? I'm kinda partial to jellyfish.

Jellyfish is totally appropriate indeed. I'll be divulgating the term! 😄
