SteemIt curation rewards strategy for beginners

DISCLAIMER: there might be errors in this article, do your own due diligence and verify the information.

What are curation rewards?

A reward you receive when you vote on a post. At least 50% of the rewards always go to the author, the other 50% is divided between the author, the curators and the commenters. Curation rewards are paid out 100% in STEEM POWER, which increases the power of your up-votes, so you help the content creators and yourself!

What does it cost to vote?

Nothing except your time.

So then i can just vote 24 hours a day and get rich?

Nope, there's something called voting power, which decreases your curation rewards every vote (although it seems to be every 5 votes for me currently). Apparently it's beneficial to vote at least 20 times a day.

Voting Power regenerates at a fixed rate over 5 days.
Posting Reward curve is now R2 + 2RS rather than R2 and a relatively small value of S was chosen.

So what's the best strategy then?

There's one more extremely important factor:

If you vote immediately after a post is made, then 99.94% of the curation reward will go to the author. If you vote after 15 minutes, then 50% will go to the author. Any votes made 30 minutes or later 100% will go to the curator.

The ideal situation for maximum rewards is voting on a post that is at least 30 minutes old, has only 1 vote from the content creator and ends up making $50,000. Unfortunately that happens very rarely. To receive the best rewards, you have to assess the quality of the post and monitor the amount of voters that came in in the first few minutes. If there are a lot of votes in the first few minutes you might want to get in way earlier than at the 30 minutes mark. It's all trial and error what works best for you.

Also keep an eye on your voting power by visiting http://www.steemd.com/@username where username should be replaced with your username. The farther it is away from 100%, the faster it regenerated, but it always takes 5 whole days to regenerate completely to 100%.

SteemFollower is a great way to increase your rewards. https://steemfollower.com/?r=4009
I just got 0.50 SBD upvotes for voting on few posts. Note: the password it asks you to use is not your main password, it is your posting key.

I didn't know that it takes 5 days to recharge, thanks for the info. I tough it only took one day, but it seemed way too slow for me. Now I know why.

I didn't even know that your voting power goes down until I read on how curating works lol.

This is a great post, just checked my power is at 93% and this post is 1 hour old. Hopefully my upvote will bring in plenty curation points. Now I'm off to tweet about it! Thanks for the tips mate, appreciated.

My Strategy:

-10 Votes and 10 Comments on Posts of Non-Followers
-Read/Watch at Least 2 Instructional/Informational Articles or Videos
-Comment on at Least 3 Follower Posts a Day (this will likely be more like 10)
-Enter 2 Contests a Day
-Publish a Unique and Valuable Post Every 2 Days (will try for every day though)

Thanks helped me to get started.

Thanks for such a helpful post. Can you let me know how to increase my voting power and what are the earning on comments?

Oy, the learning curve just got that much bigger for this newbie. I just heard about the 20 vote thing. I've checked out my steemd profile (it's still Greek to me) but I've got my favorites that I'm following and commenting on - and I'm sticking to writing for now. Thank you for this information. It's very helpful...even if I feel like a Bo-Bo

I followed you. Plz check my posts and upvote them and kindly follow me as i am new on steemit and i need your support as a beginner. Thanks in advance :)

Thank you for this great information.

"If there are a lot of votes in the first few minutes you might want to get in way earlier than at the 30 minutes mark. It's all trial and error what works best for you."

What's the exact calculation method? The algorithm, you might say. Votes in the first half hour are divided between voters and author. OK. But how? Votes cast after the first half hour go only to voters. OK. But how? Looks like earlier voters (but AFTER the first half hour) would get a bigger share. But how, exactly? Perhaps you can comment on this, tell me where to read about it.

Interesting, I'll have to start putting together a strategy that works for me. After being on the website a few days I've already made a few mistakes and haven't earned any curation rewards. I am trying to only up-vote quality content.

Thank you for this, really useful.

Very helpful.

Even though this is somewhat true, the true way of generating curation is the quality of content that one posts..and this has been verified by Whales.

This article is outdated (see comment at the top).

Unfortunately you maximize curation rewards by voting at the right time, quality is almost irrelevant
:(

If a lot of people vote early on - before 30 minutes - does that mean there can be no reward left for people who vote later? It's not clear if you're saying is it allocating a fixed piece to each voter or a share of the pie divided evenly between all those who vote.

Read the updated article mentioned by me in the top comment below this article.

Okay, I've got it now. Those graphs are very helpful. Thanks for the pointer!

hi, great post !

please read my posts, it give more details on how much you can multiply your voting power !

https://steemit.com/steemit/@knozaki2015/my-upvote-was-worth-5-06-usd-25300-or-how-to-earn-the-maximum-curation-reward

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm not over-voting. I wait about 20 minutes to upvote, and the posts I'm picking are trending. So why don't I have any curation rewards? Is it because I have very little in my wallet - does that make a difference?

very helpful thank you very much sir!

Thanks for the write up. I'm new to steemit made my first post 1 week ago and made like $130!!! Crazy so now I'm getting serious and trying to learn all I can!

@joshuathomasgray hey men I am new to this platform. I posted my very first post yesterday. What I just read is just too good to be true. I know this is too much for me to ask but if you don't mind sharing briefly, HOW DID YOU DO IT? 130$ in just one week! wow! please allow me to follow your steps. Thank you in advance.

Great read! It did open my eyes a bit. Since I follow my votes and thought that it takes my SBD everytime i votw. Or my acc get's less expensive everytime Ido it. So I thank you for clearing my mind at least a litlle bit.

Ok, 30 minutes is the sweet spot. I still don't understand, but I'll remember 30 minutes.

This post is outdated as the rules for curation rewards have changed. For example, it says the curator gets 100% of curation rewards after 30 minutes, which is isn't true. The author gets a minimum of 75% of the curation reward for their post.

"Of the 25% that goes to the curator, that portion will be split between the author and the curator if the curator votes within the first 30 minutes. The split of the 25% between the author and curator during the first 30 minutes is calculated linearly based on the time the vote is cast.

If a post is upvoted the moment of posting, 100% of the curation reward goes to the author.
At 3 minutes, 90% goes to the author and 10% to the curator.
At 15 minutes it's a 50/50 split.
At 27 minutes, 10% goes to the author and 90% to the curator.
If a post is upvoted 30 min after posting, 100% of the curation reward goes to the curator. "

from https://steemit.com/faq.html#What_determines_how_much_of_the_curation_reward_goes_to_the_author_versus_curators

While the largest guaranteed portion of the payout can be had if you wait 30 minutes, you must make the decision whether it's worth it to wait that long to vote. Voting earlier may be beneficial in cases where doing so increases the overall payout of the post.

Great. Thanks for updating me.

Thanks for the update. I am a newbie. Will you please let me know how much I can contribute trough voting with this wallet? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, @calamus056

Very helpful! Thanks for sharing. I was a bit confused as to why I wasn't receiving any curation rewards, so I'll try this and see what happens. :)

Wow. Thanks for the info !

Thanks. It has eradicated darkness about vital issues votes, rewards and son on.

in the post you say 15-30 minutes is when curation rewards are done... but then say at least vote on posts that are 30 mins old. Did you mean at most 30 minutes old?

not only that, is the curation rewards still a thing, and are there websites that can show you your curation rewards? please respond... I know this is an old post.

If the curator votes within 30 minutes of the post being created, the reward is split between the curator and the author, with a larger proportion going to the author the closer to the creation of the post.

Thanks!

I got to learn a lot from your post
