Steemit Recruiting, Growing a Community Inside of a Community.

in steemit •  8 years ago

I joined Steemit in the wake of Steve Huffman CEO of Reddit admitting to editing user comments at the database level. After joining and participating in the community I soon realized that the individuals using this platform were of like mind, to myself and friends. I then decided to assist some of them in joining and helped curate some of their initial posts.

@aprilangel @organicrecreate @throattothestars @choreboy @alexandermay

It has been an interesting process with many successes and setbacks, some technical and some social. Friends have been more technically inclined and less socially, others have been the opposite. The crash course of all things blockchain can be daunting, but so can getting people to like you. With steemit you will be getting a solid dose of both, lucky for all, experts in both areas are readily available with supportive comments.

I can say that it has been exciting and fun, I would compare it to lining up dominoes to knock over. There is a lot of work behind the scenes in setting up accounts, backing up wallets, donating steem for initial power-ups, and assisting in those first posts. Even after all the work however, you still do not know what kind of success you will have, in the end it is up to the larger community.

My biggest success was convincing @aprilangel to cover a Christmas song and post it on Christmas Eve. My thought was that a trending post in the Christmas feed on Christmas would do really well. It did, and was so exciting to be apart of and witness the response. Sadly though it was a George Michaels cover and he passed away shortly after us posting it, so strange.

But what happens when you recruit enough people to have a community inside of a community?

I am preparing a collaborative effort to finance the repair of an iMac that recently suffered hard drive failure and was decommissioned. This repaired iMac will be given to @throattothestars who has been using steemit from just a mobile phone. This computer will help her in creating and posting content on the site, thus enriching the network in the long run. I thought it would be a great idea to not only document my effort on my blog, but use the funds from the posts to actually fund the repair itself! Recently I have been making an effort to revive/restore hardware and get it to the people that can use it. My goal is to reduce the environmental impact of technology and increase the quality of life for those around me. A new SSD drive will add at least a few more years of use, it will also increase the data transfer speeds making it a very nice machine to use.

I thoroughly enjoy social experiments and will be leveraging help from my recruits and any volunteers to assist in creating posts to help raise funds. There is no way for me to know for sure how this will go, I am just setting up some dominoes and seeing what happens. I have priced out the parts below, the repair will be done by me so labor is free. 😂

In-Line Digital Thermal Sensor HDD Upgrade Cable for iMac: $37.50
SAMSUNG 250GB SATA Internal Solid State Drive: $99.99
ICY DOCK EZ-Fit Mounting Kit / Bracket / Adapter: $6.99

Total + Shipping: $165

I am reaching out to my recruits and the larger community for suggestions and ideas, this post was meant to only get the ball rolling. All spendable proceeds from this post and related proceeding posts will all go towards purchasing the needed hardware for the repair. Even though this is a relatively small amount of money, it can be an example of what can be done by a microcosm working within in a macrocosm to accomplish a goal.

I look forward to everyones comments and support of this project. When completed, this will be a shining example of the potential this platform has to positively impact the lives of all the people involved.

Thank you!

I don't know what to say! I'm extremely grateful for all your help! This IMac would make such a big difference in my life (I've never owned a computer). I'd be so grateful for somewhere to scan in my art or download my photography safely! You and this entire community are absolutely wonderful.

Happy to help, it will serve you well.

You are really great at supporting others. I certainly appreciate you!

This is a very good idea.

I am the best side kick ever!

Ever.

This is a pretty inspirational post. Thanks for your work in 2016!

Awesome, thank you. A good way to close out the year and set the tone for 2017!

I really like your concepts of a community within a community, and setting up the dominoes. Here's to positive impacts!

Thank you very much, it was definitely not planned. Just how things have shaped up.

This is so awesome to hear!

Thanks!

This was an exceptional post all-around. Nice to hear your story.

Thank you, I will be doing a feature tomorrow to try and get some funds raised. Any upvoted and comments are appreciated.

Super interesting! (Upvoted & Resteemed)

You said, "I thoroughly enjoy social experiments and will be leveraging help from my recruits and any volunteers to assist in creating posts to help raise funds. There is no way for me to know for sure how this will go, I am just setting up some dominoes and seeing what happens." - Me Too!

So, as a community participant. (new guy) ... and to 'rob' from the social network verbiage/coinage. I'd like to send you a 'Five-r' toward the project. I'm fully powered up, so no loose 'steem' to easily transfer till Jan. 3rd. You let me know how to do that. Like your idea& content! ~Peace.

I was actually wanting to refuse donations and fund it through posts only. I could donate the funds myself and just fix it but I feel that defeats the point a bit. The best contribution is to comment and upvote posts related to the project. Even better you could write a post of your own and donate those proceeds.

Noble Goal! ... But let's see who "Get's this" and can (in a small way) move the platform forward. (I could fully fund it, if that what it takes) It would be better, to see a 'community' get behind this and have collaboration. (Hence my offer of the 5'er. Seriously, let's see this get "traction" - Great for her, good for you ... Me, I just get a great smile on mt face!

5'ver on it's way. Just got paid out in SD today for a post -so 'as promised' - I'm sharing the wealth! ~Peace & Good Deeds.

Even better you could write a post of your own and donate those proceeds.

My next post will be a series I'm working on, a paintings of a tea sets and herbal tea recipes. It's a book I'm writing and illustrating. The painting takes about a week to finish, I usually post progress updates. All in all I make around $30.00 to $60.00 dollars. I donate to your great cause.

This right here is amazing, thank you so much. Be sure to give @throattothestars a follow.

Will do that right now!

Thanks!

Who do I transfer the SDs too?

My account will be fine, have two funerals this week. Will be making the intro post for it Monday hopefully. Thanks for your participation.

My condolences to you and thank you for providing the opportunity for our community to help others.

You would be proud - I explained Steemit to my niece last night. When she gets a better network connection she is planning to join. Yay!
All because of you. :)

What is wrong with her internet connection? She could always just work from her phone.

Oh, I dunno. I think she will be ready soon. :)

Might be a good idea for a crash course on wallet backup and intro creation when she starts.

right - o! She is going to send me her intro when she writes it.

Have her send the proof of life photo and four other related to the post and we can create her wallet and back it up and so on.
