Plankton and Minnows, let's look on the bright side!

Plankton, minnows - I see alot of moaning and negativity going on here on Steemit. I wanted to look on the flipside today and highlight how amazing Steem is!

Free decentralised social media applications

First of all lets remember that Steemit is completely free to use (yes you can invest in Steem to boost your account), but signing up to use it is free! Steem even delegate you with Steem Power to get your account up and running - how kind of them!

Not only is Steem free, but because it is decentralised it is completely advertisement free. Social media giants have gotten worse and worse in terms of advertising, as they try to squeeze every inch of profit out of their platform. On top of this social media now have to worry about how their data is being used and shared - especially after the Cambridge Analytica scandal where over 80 million Facebook accounts privacy was compromised. Steem doesn't collect a lot of personal data from you - only what information you share through your posts which is completely up to you!

Freedom of Speech

Not only that but Steem users are free to post what they like, and it is up to the users to decide the value of posts - if posts are offensive, spammy or scams then they will likely get downvoted and earn no rewards, but if they offer real value and new perspectives there is the potential for large rewards.

On sites such as Youtube they are cracking down and demonetising content as they see fit. Imagine a group of wealthy businessmen sitting around a table making these decisions. In the case of Steem these decisions are made collectively by the community.

But bots and whales run this town......

This is a common gripe and argument that new users to Steem make (I'd be lying if I hadn't moaned about this myself!). Yes whales do hold a lot of power on here but it is because a lot of them are are early or large investors - and this is much how bigger businesses work - larger investors have more power and say over how things run.

There are some legitimate arguments that bots are taking over and making it harder for minnows content to be seen. However, there are still loads of users out there curating good content, and also services such as @curie are doing a good job helping minnows content be recognised. The bots probably aren't going away anytime soon, and it is up to each individual user to make a decision on whether they will use them or not. I still have faith that minnows can build their account on here without the use of bots.

Money for nothing?

‘There is no such thing as something for nothing’ - Napolean Hill
This quote is true for Steem users- Yes it is true that we can make money on here without investing our FIAT, but the way we will make money is through our time.

Yes it is hard as a minnow who hasn't invested any FIAT into Steempower, but it can be done - it takes time, effort and consistency. I see people moaning about not getting upvotes or interactions on their posts, but see they have been here for months and only made a few hundred posts, and their VP is full.

I have been here for 2 ½ months and I have made just over 2,500 posts/comments! Alot of this is getting to know people and engaging with people who have similar interests to you and might be interested in what you write about. For me this was engaging with the music community - getting to know people and starting up the #musicdiscovery tag as a way for us to share music. It has been successful and I love checking out all the new music people share - my list of new music is constantly growing and I am grateful to all the Steemians sharing music.

Remember:

‘If you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always got’ - W.L Bateman

The key to success on Steemit is adapting your approach and finding out what works best for you. Rather than moan about things and not make changes you are much better to try something new and see if it works well.

To summarise, Steem is a fantastic platform which incentives its users to create great content by rewarding them in cryptocurrency. Because it is decentralised it is free of advertising and corporate corruption, and data collection. Steemians need to focus on what is good about Steem, and work out ways they can make a difference.

@conradt - I am relatively new to Steemit. To be honest, I have made couple of posts / comments regarding whales and bots.

At first I tried different posting strategies to get comments and upvotes. Finally, i realized that in the long term, quality really does count, as well as community.

I do have to admit, getting a handle on the bots and all the communities is a bit of a challenge.

Yes, there are challemges for minnows who haven't invested cash in Steemit. But some committment and perserverance go a long way.

Thank you for the balanced post.

Hey @mmo-mmo thanks for stopping by :)

Your best to focus on building a genuine following at the start to be honest - once people know who you are and become interested in what you write they are more likely to keep coming back to your blog.

It just takes time and hard work but it pays off.. there are some really nice people on Steemit, you just have to hunt them out!

Good luck!

Steemit is great, anyone complaining just doesn't know how to utilize all the tools they are given to essentially earn money for the same thing you do on facebook except less whiny people..it's a win : win in my books :)

Fair comment, and not everyone is tech-savvy. Steemit is not the easiest platform to understand. For example, I just recently noticed that the voting bots get to the 31 minute payout posts first. It's not all cut and dried, there are a lot of strategies, and time, required to do well.

As far as the tools, they are many and not always easy to employ. The bottom line is time, committement and good posting.

This is not a complaint about Steemit, just an observation...

Well if you continue to engage like this @mmo-mmo you will get the hang of it. Let me share some tips that work for me.

  • engaging with other users meaningfully on their posts will go a long way, especially authors with a lot of steem power.

  • invest in your own steem power as you make small bucks from your posts.

  • join steemit communities you like on discord or watsapp or Telegram. Although they are mostly on discord. Associating yourself with these communities and proving selfless service to them can go a long way. As well as some of these communities run giveaways from time to time where you can win sbd or steem prizes or whaleshares and other tokens. You also get to make new friends there. That's what steemit is all about.

  • join contests. As a newbie on steemit, nobody knows you yet so it would be difficult to get upvotes. It's just like Facebook. If someone is not your friend on fb, it would be difficult for them to like your post. You can win prizes in sbd and steem from contests than you will make from writing your own posts in a month.

  • keep putting out quality content. When i initially came on steemit, i was lost as to what to post. Am not proud to say but i even plagiarized content from the net. Once i started posting about original stuff i knew how to do, i noticed the difference. And as time went on, i gained more friends who make it their business to upvote my posts.

So in all, you just have to put in the extra effort, don't dwell too much on putting out your own content for now ad a newbie. Get to know the community first, make friends, join contests, join communities, comment constructively on other people's posts and lastly, just be you.

@dee-y over and out.

Thanks @dee-y some valid points there! I just try and focus on writing about stuff that interests me and I am knowledgable about so it makes it more fun to write and talk about with others!

I started on steem.chat meeting steemians as it is a little easier to understand than Discord and most the people are super friendly and helpful.

Make sure to enter my contests :)

Lolz alright @conradt, thanks

@dee-y - thank you for the comment. It seems I am following a similar arc of understanding. Initially I made a few post with un-credited images etc.

Some good points about comments, community and friends, contests etc. Will take your advice. Thank you for taking the time to go into so much detail, cheers!

yeah, true i started my account last year in the summer and did a few uploads, but I was never really to much into social media. Just more of a Youtube troll, so I came and looked around, seen people were getting huge payouts from videos and mine were getting none. So i didn't even bother posting until the last couple weeks once I seen some youtube videos of how much people can make and how they did it.

So I did a little investigating and here I am. It was confusing as hell at first. The Steem/SBD/SP thing was driving me bonkers trying to figure it out. Why weren't My SBD's going to my binance account when I send them?

If your not familiar with the everything it can be a daunting task figuring out everything but if you persevere it can pay off big time in the long run.

It just takes time and research to understand how everything works - it does seem difficult at the start but after some reading it does become easier :)

Well said the most important thing you can do on here in the beginning is comment on peoples posts and get to know people who are similar to you!

Well said @gnarlyanimations! It does take time and hard work especially at the beginning and most of us wont make a fortune on here but as you said you are doing what you would do on Facebook anyway so why not earn a few extra dollars along the way

Hell yeah , plus there is lot's of ways to make money around here by entering contests. I try to enter at least 1 a day and more often then not i get something for them. Some guy just offered me 5 SBD to make a 3d model of him . Kicking myself in the ass for not getting on here sooner.

Yeah there are ways to earn on here apart from just posting thats for sure!

Hell yeah.I just started using an upvote bot seems to be paying off but ill have to wait a few days to see the payouts. It's a great idea if your not going to be here for a few days or a weekend at least you can keep your account working for you all the time

The verdict is still out on the use of bots for me... seem to have more luck without using them actually

Do you track you percentages on steem stats? I've only been doing about a week but I am crunching the numbers. Coming up with a good system.

I havent yet? I will look into it though cheers!

Great Post !

Let's look at the positives instead of the negatives. I do have a question un-related to your article. What is the code used on steemit for quoting that allows you to have the quote in your post as you do instead of looking like the below ?

‘If you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always got’ - W.L Bateman

Hye @rentmoney I wrote a post about formatting on there which outlines how to do this its called BLOCKQUOTES - check out the link:

https://steemit.com/steemit/@conradt/the-comlete-beginners-guide-to-formatting-on-steemit

free of advertising and corporate corruption, and data collection.

It's a funny irony that steem basically is about data collection, but like you mentioned earlier it's only what you post. Like that poor guy that posted his password.
Although tracing likes could maybe give you some insights into people. Oh no, they'll know I like big butts and cannot lie.

Yeah Facebook is sneaky about how they collect to - 'check in' 'movies youve watched' etc etc and then use this to market towards you...

LOL ... I dont think taking data from here will become a thing, but maybe I am wrong

They would know I watch Westworld for instance, and all they have to do is scan the blockchain.

Speaking of Westworld isnt the new season out now?

Yes, we should talk about it in steem.chat.

Hmm I dont want spoilers....

0, i promise

‘If you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always got’

Never seen that attributed to WL Bateman. Who is he anyway? I've seen it attributed to Einstein, Ford, even Tony Robbins.

The one that came up when I searched the quote lol... I just liked the quote it fit what I was saying
