The 5 C's for success on Steem

in steemit •  6 years ago

User retention is something I have always been interested in finding new ways to encourage newer users to stay on this wonderful platform we call Steem. Today I thought I would share my ‘5 C’s for success on Steem’

Community

Becoming involved in the Steem community is one of the biggest factors to long term success. Focus on engaging with content and Steemians that produce content you are interested in - for me this has been music, crypto, travel and Steem. Focussing on content that you are actually interested makes it easier to be genuine and strike up meaningful relationships. Don’t make the mistake that most new users make and just go out trying to engage with whales.

Engaging through Steem.chat and Discord

Being involved in the community also means engaging with Steemians on the various Steem platforms but also though meeting people in steem.chat and the various discord servers.

Discord is a great way to meet new people and bounce ideas off people (and have a few laughs!). There are servers for most Steem projects, such as @curie, @steemcleaners and @minnowbooster. I started off on the Minnow Support Project server and branched out from there.

Comment

Commenting on others posts is one of the most underrated aspects of building your Steem account and following. Commenting on others posts is a great way to strike up conversations and common interests with others (and earn a few extra dollars along the way!). Obviously you want to focus on leaving meaningful comments that add to the discussion, rather than broad or meaningless comments such as ‘nice post’, ‘really good article’ or ‘I really enjoyed reading’. Talk about why you liked the article - do you agree or disagree and why? Comments are also a great way to further your knowledge by asking questions.

I think its no coincidence that I often see the same people in the comments sections engaging and generating great conversation.

Curate

Curation (upvoting) should go without saying but I see some new users who are active, creating good content and engaging with others but their voting power remains at 100%. Not only are you missing out on curation rewards (even if you have very little SP), but you are missing opportunities to help out and support others. If someone keeps upvoting my posts then after a while I become curious and check out their profile.

Consistency

Especially when you are new to Steemit consistency is so important. Consistency means creating engaging content regularly (1 - 2 longer posts per day as a ballpark figure). This means that you won't be ‘forgotten’ so easily … I know I have followed people who produce brilliant content but are fairly sporadic and sometimes when they do produce content I have forgotten who they are.

Consistency also means when you publish content or engage in others blogs that you reply to their comments. I find nothing worse than leaving a long thought out comment and having the author not even acknowledge I have replied to their post.

Content

‘Quality’ content is something that has been argued many times on here - what makes good content?

What is quality content

In my view, quality includes a mixture of the following elements:

  • Original content - not just copying/pasting from the internet
  • Thought provoking - asking questions of your audience
  • Educational
  • Longer form - this is generalised, but Steemit seems to favour articles around the 1000 or more word mark (but don’t just write more words if you don’t need to!)

The content you provide needs to be consistent, and the longer I have been on here the more I find having content around only a few topics works best (for example, music, travel and crypto). This is debatable though, as some people post on all sorts of topics and do really well.

Some things to avoid

Things to avoid when it comes to creating content!:

  • Plagarism - this should go without saying, but plagiarism is still a problem on here and will likely get you flagged
  • Poor grammar - I know English isn’t everyone's first language, but when I read an article with poor grammar I often don’t keep reading.

As always I welcome any questions or comments!

Great stuff dude, I do have a question that you may know the answer to regarding curation. How do I get my voting power to 100% or basically have my vote worth more than about 0.05c? Sometimes I like a post and I see the value increase by 0.01c-0.10c, but most of the time nothing happens

The value of your voting power will increase with more Steem Power! It seems that around 80 - 100sp will give you a vote of $0.01.... Its also linked to the current price of Steem which fluctuates alot which im sure you know well!

Ah ok cool, thanks man! I’ll stick at it. I can’t wait to see where we will be over the next 6-12 months here, and then who knows what the future will hold with crypto prices 🤞

You got the right attitude mate! Crypto is definetly a long term thing eh :)

Awesome post bro.

Obviously you want to focus on leaving meaningful comments that add to the discussion, rather than broad or meaningless comments such as ‘nice post’, ‘really good article’ or ‘I really enjoyed reading’
You clearly didnt read what I have written

I'm always on discord but lately find it not much use. I'm consistent with quality content. And I do the other things too. The first 3 months or more here I got none or one upvote and hardly a comment. Finding it hard to find things to read that I like

Congratulations! This post has been upvoted from the communal account, @minnowsupport, by conradt from the Minnow Support Project. It's a witness project run by aggroed, ausbitbank, teamsteem, theprophet0, someguy123, neoxian, followbtcnews, and netuoso. The goal is to help Steemit grow by supporting Minnows. Please find us at the Peace, Abundance, and Liberty Network (PALnet) Discord Channel. It's a completely public and open space to all members of the Steemit community who voluntarily choose to be there.

Be sure to leave at least 50SP undelegated on your account.

One thing that I would like to recommend would be proper format and editing. A post having a compelling design and visuals is more engaging to read.

How about calling it "Construct"?

I agree completly - I wrote an article about formatting a while back

https://steemit.com/steemit/@conradt/the-comlete-beginners-guide-to-formatting-on-steemit

Hi conradt your the 6th C ( LOL)
But i have to ask do yo really think that engaging at the different chatrooms and platforms will get me more appreciated? i am not that kinda girl to go and chat. If i want to make good content i need all the time and there is no time left to chat ,
but what do you think off my content?
have a nice saterday,
greetz from Holland
Britt

I think so - Steemit is a social media platform - so it pays to get to know some of the people on Steemit better - and that can be hard just through commenting on their posts.. I have met loads of people throught the chat rooms. Its not for everyone as yes it does take time but it has really helped me :)

I am coming to Holland next week!

Really Thats Nice maybe also to Rotterdam?

Yes absolutely. I joined the Smart Media Group server on discord and they’ve helped immensely with marketing and reaching a broader audience. I’d definitely check them out.

Ok I go to Discord and than find SMG?

oh $%^# ,
i forgot another C... for : COMPLETE
to complete your steemit adventure you need the Steemify app to show you whats happening in your account.
just saying...........

I havent used that one! I usually just use Steemd, Steemworld and Steem.supply!

The most difficult thing when it comes to earning and successful in Steem is Consistency :)

Yeah i agree! I think some people come in and put loads of time in and then struggle to keep it up!

Its a bit hard for me at the moment as I am travelling so don't have the time for alot of blogging but am doing my best

I just came back from a trip and I agree that it was difficult to keep writing during my travel.

Try to make time and list out ideas, you might find some good ones worth sharing :D

We are travelling for the whole summer :) I generally dont struggle with ideas but more with time to write blogs ... Its a tough one to balance because travelling takes time and is really fun so there isnt loads of time for sitting on devices writing blogs..

The ammount of memes has increased though haha

@conradt thanks for this wonderful blog full of steemit information. i will use it on daily basis

You clearly didn't read what I have written

Thank you for these great tips. I'm new in Steemit and i'm having hard time to understand the plataform. Please forgive my poor english. I'm from Venezuela

Glad you found it helpful :)

Yes your right to get sucess in steem it you have to have consistency.

very good article post.

🙚 "...I see some new users who are active, creating good content and engaging with others but their voting power remains at 100%. Not only are you missing out on curation rewards (even if you have very little SP), but you are missing opportunities to help out and support others." 🙘

I need to learn more about this, as it seems that I'm doing this wrong still. Can you please explain to me how I go about adjusting my voting power? I can see other people upvoting things at all sorts of percentages, some as low as 0.02% strength, but mine are always at the full 100% strength and I have no idea how to change that. If you have the time, could you possibly help me with this? I've only been on SteemIt for 30 days now, and I have much to learn. Thanks.
