How to protect yourself from hackers? |SOCIAL ENGINEERING|

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

I've seen some recent cyber attack in Steemit community, I would like to share my ideas on how to protect yourself from bad guys or what they call it black hat hackers. No matter how sophisticated anti-virus or firewall you have , by using social engineering the bad guys can hacked your account effortlessly without dealing any security systems you have. So what is social engineering?

Social Engineering is a tool used by a hacker through psychological manipulation that targets mainly innocent social media users.

It is easier for a hacker to use social engineering to target individual users than breaching business establishment. That's why we need to educate ourselves from it and those bad guys uses common attack technique like: Phishing or social media phishing.

Phishing is a technique that imitate legitimate website to gain your trust. Then they will request your confidential information like password and user name, and they will ask to download something that contains a malicious files. One of the example incident was faking the GTG. witness account.

There are more attack technique that a bad hackers uses and here's the examples

Here's the rule to prevent your account from hacking:

  1. Make sure you are in the right website before entering your username and password.
  2. Don't open a website that you don't trust.
  3. If someone offering you a money without any reasons at all, just ignore it.
  4. Don't keep your password in your email or any online sites, put it offline: you can print your password and put it in a safe place.
  5. SMS authentication is not recommended.
  6. Always update your security system.

Though I'm not a cyber security expert, but it will only requires common sense and education to keep our account safe and sound. I need your help by providing more details in this article. thanks :)

I've had the misfortune of being hacked a couple times. They stopped at no lengths! They went as far as stealing my phone number by having it ported to another carrier to bypass my 2FA. Not a fun experience at all.

I already updated my blog post, thanks for sharing your knowledge @tangerinetravels :)

In addition to not using SMS 2FA, also don't use the app Authy. Their entire security model is based on you having sole control of your phone number.

Use Google Authenticator or buy and use Yubikey.

I actually was once almost hacked if only I havent notice the word steemil.com instead of steemit. Was too happy that I check the website first before signing in.

Good to hear @theunlimited :)

Yeah Thank you 😊

It is true , these sites really make the whole internet look like nothing to trust on...
It is alright with our generation but the people like from 70's they dont understand these things ....where ever they see give email and password they just type in the valuable information which easily allows the hacker to crack in.....
I guess we should teach every person about these thngs .....
It is right

you can print your password and put it in a safe place.

the best and classical way to protect yourself..

yes! you are right @obaidb2 :)

The most essential component you could do to save you being socially engineered your self is to include wholesome skepticism and always be as vigilant as you may.

@john692 , we should think twice, thanks!

These things are quite disturbing for this platform how can they do such a thing, first they gain your trust and then they fuck that up, how can they do so. Well awareness is the best thing that we can create to help people to protect from these hackers, keep sharing such posts, thankyou

you are welcome mumin!

i have not kept my password ofline !
i will definitely put it ofline now!

its amazing & 100% correct idea for cyber attack.
we should more strong secreuty for steemit account to protect steemit account.afterall yor idea is most classical & informative thanks for sharing @cortexx

Disappointed..!! Social engineering is now prominent on steemit too..accounts are being hacjed and there us no way to get it back....:(.@cortexx thats the valuable info...especially the most important step is never save your password in any email..it simply sucks...
Kindly keep publishing such posts...

Cyber crime is becoming really common now. But it is really dangerous. Though just common sense is enough to tackle this.
Don't trust blindly. If anything is too good to be true, it most probably is (except steemit ;)

These cybercrime fighters are regarded as the superheroes. They're highly intelligent and have this alien-like, advanced-type knowledge within themselves. It's something that impressed me every day.

yes thank you a lot for valuable sharing. we often save our passwords in our browser or any gmail,Hotmail, yahoo etc mailing clients and think that we are safe enough, nowadays new ways of hacking being invented as day progresses so we should kept all over passwords in offline vaults.
we human are the main and the loose chain in helping the intruders to come in.

There are such many types of cybercrime , on line scams and fraud, identification robbery,
encompass hacking, attacks on pc systems and unlawful or prohibited online content.

Social engineering is a very wast fied its really not easy to learn in short time ur post have good and valueable data its also a great plateform for learning

Wao, great idea for everyone, thanks for sharing

Thank you for this post @cortexx! It is a great help especially for a person like me who is not that “techie.” And I would like to know if copying the voice of a person you know to get some information from you is also considered Phishing? I’m really familiar with the word. I hope you can enlighten me with this. 😊

Nice Post. Thanks for sharing your thought and experience with us.
@noor.money

Indeed, These are all great points.

It only takes one breach to really mess up your entire life.
