How Do Steemit Followers Compare to YouTube and Instagram Followers?

in steemit •  6 years ago  (edited)

Hi Friends!

Lately I've been talking to more and more of my friends about Steemit. One of their first questions when I tell them that I've been starting to get more requests for interviews or speaking engagements - is how many followers I have. When I tell them it's about 4k... they are really surprised.

In the world of YouTube, Instagram, and other sites - 4k would be nothing. You really need to amass at least a 50k following before things start moving and shaking.

In this video, I do a more direct comparison on how gaining a followership on Steemit differs from other content sites and why the fact that's it different is actually really cool. I discuss engagement ratios and retention in this video too. I did a video talking about followership last week and there was a lot of interest, so I thought I’d dive into another aspect of this conversation!

If you have any thoughts or questions on this video, don't hesitate to shoot them below! Love you guys and I look forward to chatting with you in the comments.

XO, Lea

nice comparison

What a great topic to talk about! Would like to share some shocking statistics of mine:

  1. It took me exactly 655 days to earn my first 266 subscribers on YouTube. As a comparison, it only took me 112 days to gain the 266 followers on Steemit as of today.

  2. Almost every Steemit post has legit comments on them (which means not counting spam). Less than half of my YouTube videos have comments on them.

  3. My 2.5 year old YouTube channel has gotten a grand total of 649 likes across 189 videos. Compare that with my 112 days old Steemit account, this account has collected 2,029 upvotes across 51 Steemit posts (not including comments), this is nuts!

  4. The same YouTube channel received 282 dislikes across 189 videos. Well, only received one troll downvote so far on one Steemit post.

  5. I earned exactly $97.71 USD across my 166 YouTube videos that did generate ad revenue (that's until YouTube demonetise my channel due to policy changes). Guess what, it only took me 3 DTube videos to surpass that amount (at today's prices). Unbelievable.

In conclusion, there's no need for huge influence to be successful on the Steem blockchain, as of today. We should consider ourselves as the early adopters of this platform that may be as huge as today's Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Great opportunity for those who missed out on the early days of those mainstream social media platforms.

Thanks for the stats, I'm just starting to ramp up and this is good input!

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

I agree I tied to start on YouTube and dtube at the Same time but now I just go dtube I get way more engagement over here

That's awesome to hear @supremegold22! I don't want to say that people are "fake" on other content sites - but the level of interaction is just so much more shallow. I love the realness that happens here.

WOW! Thank you so much for sharing your stats. That really helps add to this conversation. I'm so glad you found this place and have been able to shift how you monetize your content. I think you make a great point about being early adopters too.

The idea of making a living by becoming a YouTube star seems silly these days because it is so hard to break through. Here on Steemit - even people that are new users have an opportunity to stand out if their content is good. Of course time and energy building community are needed to sustain that - but it is a very cool opportunity for content creators.

You are so right. I talk more to my followers here than any other platform. I have 600 followers here on Steemit and I am more engaged with them. On facebook I have close to 4K and only 2% engage. On YouTube we have 2500 and on average 35-50 views per video the first 2 days. It is insane. I have only 3 or 4 people that I actively have a conversation with on my videos. Here it depends on what the topic is but the conversations are more real.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this topic @curlfamilyvlog! Thanks for sharing some of your stats - that really helps add to the conversation here. One of the biggest things I noticed when I first joined Steemit was the depth and quality of comments. On other content sites - people will often leave short, unremarkable comments like "Nice video!".

Here people really engage and get to know each other. :) It's so cool.

it makes it feel like you are actually connecting with a person. And that is what social networks should be all about. The rest is just extra.

Hey this is great, it's really fascinating how when we all own the network instead of just trying to vie for scraps of attention on someone else's centralized network like twitter or instagram so "someday" we can "do something with it," that we all care about what each other is doing A LOT more. We're truly living in a wonderful experimental time, I'm going to resteem your video and show my friends and family I've been trying to get on here. Thanks for laying it out!

Thanks for the kind words and the re-steem! You make an excellent point about the difference in culture stemming from the fact that we are decentralized and all have a stake in the success of the platform.

Good luck getting your friends and family on here! It's a bit of a learning curve - but there is so much potential for those who put in the work.

I agree, over here is a much more personal interaction that makes the experience much more interesting. But you have to work for that as well and hold them. This requires some constant effort.

Great points @flauwy. Building a community and then staying engaged with them is key - and it definitely takes more work than people think.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my video! I don't think i've ever told you this - but you were one of the first people that inspired me when I first joined the platform almost a year ago! I really found a lot of videos helpful for learning how to navigate this place. Sorry it has been so long since I stopped by and said hi on your page! I hope you've been doing well. :)

Man you are so brilliant @coruscate :) I’m so proud of what you have done here. Ill always be glad to say I knew you before you were famous :)

aww thanks my friend!!! You have always been so encouraging of me and my content and I appreciate that so much!

PS... I'm currently uploading a video to Dtube about Steem Monsters and I talk about Mene for a hot second. I wore all my mene pieces in hopes that i'd get a gold card in the video. LOL

That’s awesome!! Can’t wait to see!! Did you see my ALL GOLD BLOCKCHAIN transaction???

I saw aggroed resteem it - but I actually just went and read it now. That is AWESOME!!!! hahaha

Closed the deal!!

Hiii

Completely agree! I have 872 followers so far and feel like I have a little community of like-minded people to connect with already! I'm so interested to see how things grow and change as more and more people jump on! In so many ways it's the most exciting social media space to me 😎

That's so cool to hear bonnie! I'm super curious how that will all pan out too. As we grow, I hope we can keep that sense of community. I think SMT's will really help with that because people can get plugged into different groups based on their interests.

Love you guys and I look forward to chatting with you in the comments.

We love you too!

Hahah big love all around!! 💕

Honestly I love my subs over on YT but the problem is the algorithm that is now systematically NOT showing my own subs my new videos for reasons that are beyond me. However, on here there is no algorithm and so everything I publish gets shown to all my followers as long as they check their feed and see it. Of course you get curation rewards on here as well which is a huge plus, especially compared to Googles revenue program for creators, which is a paradox in itself because they want you to click on those adverts and leave the site but you also want the viewers to watch your video so no one wins in the end...

Hey @tanbay! Awesome to hear that you've developed a cool community over on YT too. Speaks a lot to your ability to connect with people online. :)

I hear a lot of YouTuber's talk about the algorithm change these days. I can only imagine how frustrating that would be after spending so much time and energy to build your channel.

Funny point about the ads directing people away from the video! That is a bit of a paradox. One of my favorite things about posting content here is being able to monetize my content without dealing with ads.

Thanks for stopping by and adding to the conversation! <3

I'm not buying it. Steemit is very much full of follow 4 follow, bot and spam accounts. I do think we have a higher rate of engagement, but it's not a very big difference.

The real difference is that there's a core of users who are thoroughly invested here. It's a very small number, but that core is very engaged because they're financially and/or ideologically invested in the platform.

Followers are also much better monetised, and incentivized to comment. A single view on YouTube is worth $0.001 to a creator via ads. If a user here has a $0.01 upvote, that's already 10 times as much, and the core users have much more than that.

Thanks for adding to the conversation @demotruk! Especially since we have had different experiences - it's nice to get different perspectives chiming in. I would definitely agree that there are a TON of bots and people who try to play the "follow 4 follow" game...but It seems like they aren't taken very seriously on here. At least that has been my experience.

Interesting, never thought about the difference or, lets say, “value” of a follower on steemit vs the more established platforms. I did notice the high level of interaction here. I also feel some sort of responsibility to interact with followers. I guess the fact that you get rewarded on steemit so directly (Voting) is the drive behind all this. It also keeps trolls away, which I hope will stay this way!

Thanks for sharing, looking forward to more of your content!

Thanks for stopping by and adding to the conversation @michelmake! Fewer trolls is one of my favorite parts about being here. I think the ability to downvote with monetary consequence really helps keep them at bay.

You are totally right that there is a different level of expectation around interacting with followers here. On YT or FB, it is pretty common to not reply to comments - but here that would almost be considered rude. LOL

At a minimum, it wouldn't be smart to ignore comments. Interacting and responding to people in the comments is definitely one of the best ways to build your community here. :)

.

LOL how did your concert go? What instrument do you play? I don't think we've ever talked about that! Us band geeks have to stay together. lol

Also, i'm really glad you enjoyed this video!

I miss the early days of social media like twitter when people really engaged and met each other. I hope you are right.

I've never really got into Twitter so I'd like to ask; what changed and when?

Also welcome to Steemit :)

Ooh i'd love to see your response to this too @thomsinger - whenever you get the time. I actually never really dove into Twitter either.

Great info! I understand that this is not a follow for follow platform, now I was from the other platform where that is the norm. Since coming here on Steemit, I've learned not to follow for follow like I was so accustomed to, now I really search for people with content I like.

That's awesome to hear @bigblueleadsled! It can be a bit of a learning curve when first joining to figure out all the social norms. They really are a bit different than other sites.

Agreed. I made a similar error starting out, until I realized that about 40 of the first 50 followers were bots...

IMO, because of how the system is gamed even just following people because you enjoy their content isn't really encouraged. Let's be honest; I bet on most anyone's follow list are a number of people that you could care less what they have to say, but because they draw a crowd they are added.

Especially while new to the platform; I would hate my steemit attitude if that carried into real life...

"hmm... do I like that or is liking this going to toss a few cents my way"
"Oh, I want to respond, but nobody is looking at this one, nevermind"

I would smack myself in the mouth for thinking like that of anyone I know...

Lol!!!!
Cool response. You are totally right tho.....OMG!

I've been reading and watching your content and it's amazing. I hope that I can be an influencer in this community like yourself. Keep up the great work my friend!

Aww thank you @mainos12345!! I've been really enjoying getting to know you a little better through the comments lately! Thanks for stopping by and checking out my content so regularly. :)

I watched your video and I would have to say that my experience so far on steemit has been somewhat of the opposite. I have been on steemit for one year. I try to post my photography on a consistent basis and keep it high quality, and I feel that my engagement has gone down as I gain followers. All I get now are automated responses, and a few genuine people saying they like the post every so often. Then it seems I never hear from them again. I get more engagement with my very few followers on instagram. I like the concept of steemit, but people dont seem to appreciate photography as much. I consistently see people interacting with stolen photos from around the net and posts about upvote bots. I will keep posting though and see what happens. Glad to see you have success, thanks for the post.

Thanks for adding to the conversation @shomophoto! Especially since you have had a different experience - it is always nice to get more diverse viewpoints in a conversation like this.

If you are feeling like you aren't getting much human interaction on your posts - maybe take a look at how much outreach you are doing on other peoples pages? Especially other photographers that you admire here on the platform. For me, I have found that people tend to follow and comment on people's posts because they feel a personal connection with them - and not strictly based on the content. Maybe there are discord groups for photographers you could get plugged into to start growing out that network.

One of my favorite stories of this is @sweetjsss. She is obviously one of the top Steemians here on the platform - and she talks about how in the beginning, she would try to leave 100 commetns a day on other people's posts. That blew me away when I heard that and really shifted my perspective on the value of outreach when I was new on here.

Thanks again for stopping by and chiming in! :)

Yeah that's what I noticed almost right away on steemit. The activity is far more dense than any other platform.

oooh "dense" is a good way to put it. Love that.

Ps.. hope your doing well! Sorry it's been a while since I popped by and said HI on some of your posts. :)

Congrats on the 4k. That's still a lot. I just started here this week. Wish I'd started here the same time I started on YT- which was in January. The engagement does seem great. Thanks for the encouragement.

I'm so glad you found this video encouraging! Honestly, you are still a super early adopter for starting now. Just keep reaching out and commenting on people's posts like this and creating good content and your community will start to grow before you know it. :)

I love this post. Steemit is a community as opposed to just trying to get the most people. I tend to follow people that I am similar ideas, thoughts, articles, goals or make a connection with. The difference is that your fellow Steemians will coach and support you so that you can be successful on this platform.

For these reasons, I had already followed you after one of your previous articles.

aww thanks @juliabreheny! I'm so glad to hear that you connected with this post too. I think the whole approach of this place is so much better geared towards community.

Did you know that on instagram you can actually purchase thousands of followers? That's why sometimes you'll see people with 50k followers - and only 1 or 2 comments on their posts. What's the point of that? Usually it's because they want to attract add revenue. Luckily, we can monetize our content in other ways so having the "biggest following" doesn't really matter as much.

Thanks for chiming in and adding to the conversation!

@Coruscate
I think you are correct about the other platforms; with youtube if you don't have like 10k views per month they don't even consider you worth the time of allowing monetization.

It's funny that you mention the follow for follow, I must be oblivious to that, since someone that I finds what I have to say interesting doesn't mean it goes both ways.

I'm still too new and with too few followers (actual humans sitting at keyboards) to comment more deeply.

Thanks for the awesome response @bmanmcfly! Steemit definitely gives content creators a chance to monetize their content early on before they even have those 10k views.

As for the follow for follow - some people do that, but it's not really the norm. People usually just follow those if they like their content.

There are numerous issues with how things are distributed on steemit, but In a general sense, the more people you draw, the bigger the rewards get. Which seems fair; especially when there are chances to see that some have built up a following over a period. Good way to maintain motivation that persistence can pay off.

You are an inspiration, I am excited to start my journey on steemit and dTube :)

aww thanks @savannahvan! Excited to see more content from you on Dtube! We could use some more girl power on there! ;)

@coruscate as i am following u from the last 3 days seeing that d u r descing in so way that i am feeling that r feeling very good relationship in all our communities steemit/steem followers/dlive very friendly & helping each other which is good sign of our deveolping

Hello nice topic to discuss about thou, I'm a visual storyteller, travel & lifestyle blogger here in Nigeria. Well you can say my social media life is impeccable but nothing compare to the moment my younger brother @mediahousent introduced me to steemit, my first video alone is doing wonderfully well barely up to a day, and having used other platforms for years now and nothing to talk about them. And one thing I realize here is that you dont need to have thousands of followers before your content can do well compare to instagram that you need thousands of followers before your video views can runs into thousands lol...Please would appreciate your time on my blog too @bayodesteem, i just started and i really wanna connect with people of like minds. Cheers

YouTube & Insta followers are really nothing to be compared with steemit folowers cos in steemit we have nothing to lose like them.
In terms of comment, dropping a very nice comment on someone's blog can earn you a decent upvote which is not available over there. Some might even ignore your comment. So pathetic!
And you meet reputable people via mention and comment, it is called networking. Thanks.
Nice one @coruscate

What makes you stay motivated in steemit platform and how you think out of the box content to get connected with your followers ? @coruscate

Thanks for the great questions @vickytech! Honestly, I rarely feel like I need to "motivate" myself to be here - because I really love it so much. I have fun making content, and I have fun connected with awesome people.

As for content ideas - I think it takes a lot of trial and error to see what types of content you are most passionate about, and what your audience also resonates with. It kind of depends on my mood too. Sometimes I have a lot on my mind and want to do more vlogs, other times i'm in a creative space and just want to make music or do more creative content. I usually just follow the flow of energy to get inspired.

I hope that helps!!

i agreed wiyh you. i always talk more words my ideas in steemit. i like it

Really amazing love it

saludos muy bueno

Well done wonderful job thanks for sharing us thanks

Great thanks for sharing

Nice video.....well explained..

i like your video to much u look awesome

hãy chỉ cho tôi cách chèn video vào steemit ?

Hello, thanks a lot for this informations, knows i am totally agree with you about the importance to have engage people that follow you.The numbers is not so important it is much important to have people engage if you want make them concrete action no matter what your area. i am going to watch more video of you thanks for your share i wish you many greats things.

Hi @coruscate nice to see you...U are cute

I'm not sure that I agree; dtube videos only seem to do well when they're talking about how great dtube or steemit or steem or cryptocurrency is. It's also not a good platform; I've been trying to upload videos for days and keep getting hit with "unknown errors". I can't comment on videos unless I'm using my mobile device, and I can only watch videos half the time, the other half the time they won't load. I think Steemit / Dtube has a long, long way to go before it starts making waves.

There is still unfortunately a "follow for follow" mentality within some Steemit groups, but we all know how empty that is. I need to start making more videos for DTube, but I am not sure whether it's as good as DLive. Either way, I have to put in some work and get things happening.

Thank you so much for this! I am just learning about steemit so your videos are VERY HELPFUL!

I'm so glad to hear that!!

This is so spot on! I was speaking recently about instagram that it seemed everybody was on that platform just trying to build their own platform, it just didn't feel authentic.
I could never get into it.
However, in the very short amount of time that I've been on Steemit, I have found that I am consistently interested in certain peoples posts and find myself actively seeking out others with common interests.
I also find myself slowly getting engaged with my own content (a first).
Steemit Community feels authentic to me.

Hahahaha "the plant lady is the new cat lady" I love it so funny

well thannkyou so much @coruscate!!
i am new to steemit and i dont what to even write but i am glad that the ist day on dtube here and i checked your some videos and then realised this is a place which will never let you down and indeed you donthave to fear about likes dislikes or chain or boss stuff but indeed you can learn and grow and indeed get to know the real talent is to speak free and the videos from you are like an inspiration.beautiful and amazing personality are you and on top of that great content to boost us up

You can not compare those 3, because 99% of STEEMIT Followers are BOTS and I can prove it🕵🏾‍♂️
