Hi Steemians... this is just a quick post to give my early impression of Steemit and whether someone could actually live on the value created by posting content here.

I've been using Steemit for about 2 weeks now and so far have found it very enjoyable. I find that the content quality is there, though you do have to proactively search for people you want to follow.

To me Steemit feels like a mixture of Twitter and Facebook groups. New content gets pushed lower on the feed pretty quickly so you need to be posting often to get max exposure. Shorter or video content also seems to perform better.

I've also being posting in other tags (e.g. gaming) which I am interested in that are less competitive than some of the top tags like life/bitcoin. Posts in less competitive tags have alot more staying power.

People with good Youtube presents like Boxmining and IvanOnTech are doing very well on Steemit, which is promising. For them I think it’s a full-time job and pretty much all that they do, but they are generating enough income on Steemit to live off.

So, can you live off Steemit then? Certainly, some people are already doing it. Whether this can continue is going to depend on how successful the platform becomes.

I'm hoping for the best but planning for the worst. So while I definitely enjoy Steemit and will continue to support the platform by posting, acquiring steem power and engaging the community. I also realise that new technology is risky and that we can’t have our livelihood depend on it just yet. So other sources of income are essential for now.

Overall, I'm liking Steemit alot :)

I'm liking it a lot here too, just the amount I've learned about crypto currency in a week has made it worth it to be here.

great to hear 💪

It's a good side hustle but dangerous to depend on it as your sole source of income. Build your account if you don't need the money for an emergency and get your voting power as high as you can. The higher the value of Steem the harder it is going to be to grow. Or rather, while sbd remains close in price to steem it is harder to grow. Either way, you don't want all your eggs in one basket if you can't access your account for some reason.

Thanks Lizelle... "Or rather, while sbd remains close in price to steem it is harder to grow." dont understand this...can you explain further... are you saying that if SBD is much higher than steem then the bulk of people with take SBD and so getting Steem is easier? When the prices are similar people take 50/50 so harder?

Your post payout is shown in SBD but the payout is 50% in SBD and 50% of whatever steem power you could buy with SBD. The payout exchange rate is calculated at the average over three days to avoid huge fluctuations. So the higher SBD goes the more Steem Power you get for your SBD. Does that make sense?

If you take a 100% sp payout it is calculated as how much sp can you buy for the SBD payout amount.

I get it now... thanks for the explanation ... that makes sense

Wow!
Such a nice analysis
However, I think that steemit platform will last for good. Reason is that the quality of content people are developing are a good source of informàtion for Google which I believe is maybe in partnership with this platform in supplying info to anybody using the engine, this is a great value on its own which will make this platform to survive. Other reasons are still there but I can't elucidate all here because I am typing with a phone. This cant however be your only source of income, i think it is not wise. Thanks, nice post

I totally agree with you @crypto-n-custard
It is too risky to depend on steemit for a living, we need to be involved with other things and enjoy steemit as a community of great minds. Nice post, following you
