I have seen a few posts lately when people are posting about the "achievement" of how many followers they have. I honestly don't see where the achievement is.
We all know that most of them you haven't earned from producing good and interesting articles. If I started a new account tomorrow I reckon you would most likely pick up 20 followers from nowhere. A majority of new users don't understand how it works and just follow without reading or knowing what you do.
I have close to 700 followers and double check often in case I have missed someone out who I want to follow. The proof is in the pudding on your posts who are your genuine followers. Who comments and upvotes your material on a regular basis. I guess as a thumb suck that out of the 700 that maybe I interact with maybe 30 to 35 on a weekly basis on my posts. That is 5 % of my followers so in order to grow to 50 interactions with different followers a week, I will need at least a 1000 followers. How many of your followers upvote and comment on your posts. Think about it and work out the percentages, maybe you are very fortunate and are closer to 10 %.
Now you see why I laugh when users highlight how many followers they have. It is not a true reflection and distorts someones popularity. The users that have been on here from the beginning have grown their accounts organically as it takes time. I would rather have genuine followers than just a number that is huge.
On the other hand the people I follow is because I want to and there posts are interesting to me. I fell into the trap of following hundreds of people in the beginning but have over time trimmed them out. there is nothing worse than going to your feed and it is full of useless rubbish that you will never read. I have been adding more people lately as I have had more time to find new people. I think that you reach a point where you can't vote for everyone everyday otherwise you will end up below 50% voting power in no time. Believe me it is easy to do and have seen others lower than that lately.
That is one of my main goals for growing, is that I can give value in a vote as a percentage to everyone I follow. If I cut my vote down to 30 percent then my votes will be dust and to me would be an insult showing no value with my vote. I don't think that is right so I am trying to spread them out as much as possible in this growing period.
The total number of your followers and the number of those who regularly interact with you and upvote you are positively correlated. The more followers you have, the more likely your posts are to be noticed. When it comes to followers, it's the order of magnitude that counts. It's a very different thing to be followed by 10,000 accounts than to be followed by 100 or even 1,000.

I understand what you are saying. The more who follow it goes to their feeds as well giving you more chance to being noticed. All I was saying that it looks like a small window of between 5 and 10 percent who are genuinely following you.

Oooo.Lol. Better to say it for what it is. Shallow people will boast and be ignorant to what it in fact means. It is exactly the same in life, I would rather have 5 very good friends than 100 hanger ons.

howdy there @cryptoandcoffee! very good and astute article. I hope that's the right word to use there, if not well just say he's a redneck! anyway my vote power is usually around 40-45%, can't seem to get it higher unless I don't vote for anyone and I don't think i can do that.
I guess I need more sp and in time it will be easier.
yeah I never look at the followers thing because only a handful comment or vote so they are the true followers.
great post sir!

Hi @janton. Take two days off and recharge. That way your vote will be worth something and just maybe with 2 days off give us a chance with @abh12345 curation league. Just kidding your too smart to fall for that but was worth a shot. The more SP and more voting power it will become easier. It won't take you long.

I made my reg in june, this year, and my first day up here, i saw, have more then 100 follower. Before my first post or comment. Whaaat? Like you said, they came from nowhere. And the funny thing, not all was a new user without posts...
Maybe is exist a tool, like steemauto, but for follow, not for vote? I dont know.
And yes, i dont get every day more hundred votes or comments.

Hey @kriptonik. I think it's the same for everyone and that is why I work on a 5% ratio to get the real followers.

Its weird, but hey, no problem :)
And another weird thing, you can see some veteran user, called whale, if you want, with more thousand followers, and pretty activity in blogging. And they dont get much more votes... Why? More then a year work, high reputation and sp, daily work (or least posting something), and get a few dozens of vote. Where are the one million steemit users and where are their votes?

I think you are talking about huge whale which I think is a resteem service. They need as many to follow them to justify the fees for resteeming. There may be 1 million Steemit members but due to multiple accounts and lost users etc there are a lot less. If there were a million active users on here there would be a big difference to what we are experiencing now.

No, i can recognize a resteem service :D
I talk about the ordinary members. You can see some, who doesnt earn much vote, but have lot of followers.

Well written. Valid point. Sometimes you can't control who "follows" you but you quickly get to know those who are your "tribe". Like you I appreciate those that upvote and comment. I put extra effort in with those who actually read and appreciate my posts. You have probably seen my recent post about my 400 but I can honestly say that I interact on a not too irregular basis with up to half. My brother has been here a year and has almost 2000 (I think) but he admits he has far less than I do who are genuinely interested

Hi@buckaroo. I don't know your followers but if you are even interacting with a 100 of your followers then you are doing amazingly well. To get genuine followers is hard and I think I am adding 10 a week or so but it really is most likely one or two genuine followers.

Are you on the curation league of @abh12345 ? He gives a great indication of what's going on. It's quite encouraging. The #payitforward is also worth getting involved in. There are those that care and make that effort. That's why I refuse to use the bots. It's impersonal. I think the majority of those madly following everyone in their feed are just after the votes

I agree. Your follower count doesn't really matter on Steemit. This isn't a regular social media site. I mean sure more followers is better in most cases but it doesn't necessarily mean that you get more upvotes
