RUSSIAN scientists have been arrested at a top-secret nuclear warhead facility for mining bitcoin through the use of the country’s most powerful supercomputers, it has been reported.
The unnamed suspects were arrested at the Federal Nuclear Centre in Sarov, western Russia, which is a restricted area.
In a statement, the centre said: "There has been an unsanctioned attempt to use computer facilities for private purposes including so-called mining."
The nuclear centre’s security department was alerted when the scientists attempted to connect the supercomputer to the internet. The alleged criminals were then handed over to the Federal Security Service (FSB), according to the Russian news service Mash. The press service told Interfax news agency: "As far as we are aware, a criminal case has been launched against them.”
Cryotcurrencies such as Bitcoin do not rely on centralised computer servers.
People are rewarded in Bitcoins for providing computer processing power to the cryptocurrency system, to enable transactions to take place. The Federal Nuclear Centre is believed to employ up to 20,000 people and its supercomputers have a capacity of 1 petaflop, the equivalent of 1,000 trillion calculations per second.
Mining cryptocurrencies requires great computational power and a huge amount of energy.
There have also been reports of some other industrial facilities in Russia being used for mining cryptocurrencies.
One businessman is alleged to have bought two power stations for the activity.

Meanwhile, leaders from around the world could be set to hold talks on Bitcoin at next month’s G20 summit after French and German officials called for a discussion on cryptocurrencies.
The finance minister and Central Bank Governors of France and Germany have requested that talks on policy and monetary implications of cryptocurrencies are part of the agenda for March’s meeting.
The officials put forward their request in a letter to the finance minister of Argentina, who currently hold the G20 presidency. They said: “We believe there may be new opportunities arising from the tokens and the technologies behind them.
The letter from French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, his German counterpart Peter Altmaier, French Central Bank Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau and his German colleague Jens Weidmann, calls for an international report on the implications of cryptocurrencies and how they could be regulated.
Since the start of 2018 Bitcoin has seen its value plunge and is currently worth just $7,655.
The dramatic drop in its price has been largely blamed on some countries starting to implement regulation on digital currencies.
