This section will go over the following.
Web Design
- Wordpress
- Shopify
- Custom Designs
Website design can be intimidating for people who are just starting out. If you're one of the beginners, don't worry :D Try to avoid any "website builders" provided by hosting companies because they're usually complete garbage lol. They're not only bad at what they do, but you can't take the code afterwards and move it to a different hosting company if you wanted to.
Normally when someone wants to put up a website they have an idea already planned out. This usually includes your niche, so you're one step ahead of the game.
Now that you have your niche and idea, you need to get some code together. In the past I've paid thousands for super custom coded websites, but that's not always needed. If you want to save some money you can always go with a premium wordpress or shopify theme and get up and running within a day. There's no need to wait for a designer to code something in a few weeks.
WordPress
Wordpress is one of the leading platforms that help peolpe get blogs and website live in a short amount of time. One of the most amazing things about Wordpress is that they have something called a 1 click install which is exactly what it sounds like. It speeds up the process of installing your theme. You can buy some pretty amazing themes form marketplaces like themeforest or templatemonster so you can be up and running within 24 hours. After you pay for your premium theme you will usually get an instant download link.
After you download your theme you can now go over to you hosting account and install it because you've already installed Wordpress on you hosting. Find the folder where you theme is at, or your desktop, and select the theme folder to upload. Sometimes Wordpress can go through the folder and pull out the theme. Other times you'll have to select the right file which is usually titled "Theme" or the name of your theme. Some themes are so advanced that they come with prewritten content and their own plugins. You can install them with one click and they will be configured right away showing a fully functional website on your hosting account :)
If you have a theme with the one click install content you'll want to go into your Wordpress dashboard and edit the content. Duplicate content is never good, but with the one click install content it at least gives you an idea of where to add content. Now you'll need to edit some of your images, which isn't difficult. You'll need to upload your own logo, pictures, blog stuff, etc. Themese normally come with their own logo on them, we dont' want that :)
Shopify
If you have a physical product and you want to sell it online, I would recommend using Shopify. All you have to worry about is buying a domain, getting a logo made, and setting up an email address. Literally everything else is already set up on the back end and you don't have to worry about much.
Shopify has a good amount of free themes that look really good. If you don't want to use a free shopify theme you can pay $130 or more for one of their premium themes and use it on your website. Shopifys themes are a little more expensive compared to the $50-$75 Wordpress themes.
Uploading your new shopify theme is pretty smooth compared to Wordpress because you do it all within your shopify dashboard. There's no downloading your theme after purchase and then uploading it to your account because everything is handled internally. It's actually a pretty great idea because people who aren't as tech savvy as others can easily set their themse :)
Custom Designs
- Most of the times a custom design will be mor expensive and that's because you're not limited to what someone else already made in a theme. The main thing you'll notice with custom coded designs is the prgramming that goes into it compared to a theme you purchase. Custom programming can help you get a script running more smooth, add a complex feature that a theme can't provide, or make everything on your website a little more awesome lol. You're not limited to what someone has already programmed for a theme like an app (shopify) or plugin (Wordpress) because your programmer can do whatever you want them to if they have the knowledge to do so. I'll reiterate that custom designs cost much more than themes because you're not restricted and you can basically do whatever you want.
