It has been a while since I have mined Steem, so I figured out that maybe I should give it another try now that after the last hardfork there were some changes regarding the mining as well. I just wanted to see if there is much point in mining at the moment if you have some spare CPU power available that you may want to use to gain some extra Steem Power on Steemit.
Last time I mined I have written a guide to help you start:
Getting Started Mining Steem on Windows [Step by Step Guide]
Although the guide is already over a month old it can still be used to get you started mining Steem if you are interested in trying it out and if you have some questions I would be happy to answer them here since the old topic is locked already and you cannot comment or vote for it anymore.
Back to the mining part now, let's see what changed. It seems that after the hardfork the hashrate that the miner gets now is significantly reduced as compared to before. Before the hardfork an Intel Core i7 5820K CPU (6 cores, 12 threads) running at 12 threads was getting about 44390 HPS (hashes per second) and now with the latest steemd client the hashrate the same CPU under the same conditions manages to get is just about 28800 HPS.
Furthermore the time currently reported as estimated to find a block is apparently not working very well as it is short, but in reality it takes much longer to mine a block and get into the miner-witness queue to sign one and get 1 Steem Power as a reward.
About a month ago when I previously mined Steem I was getting about 1-3 blocks per day (rarely just 1) and now I just got 1 block for a whole day of mining. Will probably mine for a day or two more to see if I'll have a better luck, but after that I'll most likely stop again.
The only thing that you may actually use mining for is to mine a new account instead of registering a new one, though this way you don't get the 3 Steem Power when you start with a regular new user registering on the Steemit platform. Once you mine a new user account it will get just 1 SP, the block reward that you get from the mining of a block.
If you have a question or want to add something, then please leave a comment below.

Been looking for a guide to mining Steem. And I found it. Hah! LOL
Thanks!

I'm mining right now. how do i know i hit a block? i'm getting these redundant messages:

You are still downloading the blockchain data, after that the actual mining will start.
You should see a note that you have mined a POW on steemd.com, and then you get included in the miner-witness queue to sign a block and get the reward. Unfortunately when that happens is harder to track as there are no notifications, you will see +1 SP in your wallet in an hour or two after you get a note on mining a POW.

So would I actually be likely to earn any Steem for my main account if I ran a miner? I have an AMD A8, but I don't leave it on 24/7. If I can run this in the background and make a little extra then it may be viable. The PC will run a little hotter and use more electricity of course.
I didn't understand the last part about why you would only do this for a new account. Why would that not get the initial Steem?

When you register on steemit via the normal way you get 3 SP from the @steem account as a start.
If you mine an account instead of registering it then you don't get that 3 SP, but instead receive the 1 SP reward for the mined block that created that account.
If you are mining with an already registered account you will just get the 1 SP reward when you mine a block.

Okay, so a reasonable PC may get one block (=1 Steem) per day. That's more than I generally make, so it may give me a boost. I may give it a try just to see. Thanks

It seems so for the moment with a high-end Intel CPU, your AMD may need more time, but luck also plays a role... so the best thing is just to give it a try and see after 2-3 days what will be the results. Also if you do, please post what hashrate you are getting when mining.

Seems like 1 SP at the moment, used to be more, but haven't been mining for a while, just started again yesterday.

I compiled this step by step guide after the hard fork on Aug 15th.

I don't have an extra PC to run on so I"m on doing 6k hash with 2 threads. At first I getting 4 in a day but avg 2 a day. Last one was 3 hours ago and then 12 hours ago. So it seems odd why you aren't getting more with your system.

hi @cryptos , I just started mining about 20 hours ago. All seemed well until some red and yellow text saying
1220397ms th_a database.cpp:637 _push_block ] Failed to push new block:
10 assert_exception: Assert Exception
abs_rshares > 50000000 || abs_rshares == 1: voting weight is too small, please accumulate more voting power or steem power
{}
th_a steem_evaluator.cpp:889 steemit::chain::vote_evaluator::do_apply
Is there any problem?

Does not look to be a problem related to mining, are you mining only or you are also using the node to connect some script or software that automates things like voting for example?

nope, i'm a noob in all such programming. however i added 2 miners, one of which the witness itself, and another account which i am managing for the person.
which means
miner = ["myusername","yourWIFprivatekeyhere"]
miner = ["myusername","yourWIFprivatekeyhere"]
both different username and active WIF key

If it continued working after the message normally there should be no problem, you can see such warning messages from time to time related to different things, they should not be causing you problems mining.

I see, thanks a lot @cryotos , Can i trouble you with another question, with my set-up of 2 miners, even though both account are first created in steemit, and already received the 3 SP upon signing up, will the mined SP goes to the witness, or go to the individual miner?

If you want to have both miners recieve rewards you should setup witness accounts for each miner in the config file.

no, I'd only want 1 of them to receive the rewards. Looks like i'm on the right path at the moment. Thanks @cryptos !

STEEM Miner not run on Windows XP
I know many peoples still use Windows XP, and I am the one. Some crypto wallets don`t work on it, but most work with no problems. Burst, NXT, Curecoin, Gridcoin, all HTML5 wallets on NWjs engine, Sia, SJCX... Is it possible to change few lines of code, so it will compile on older MS Visual C compiler that still support all XP, w7, w8 and w10. Will be great to have settings for 64bit buid for newer, and 32bit build for older OSes.
