Gone Whale Watching... Take 3

It is time to give a quick check on the 6 accounts I have mentioned in my previous Whale Watching post and see how them getting Whale upvoted and receiving some nice initial reward for maybe not so good content has affected their future posts. The specific authors are interesting because some got to take big rewards for posts that probably did not deserve it, some were initially voted, but then got punished and their rewards were taken away, some were rewarded with smaller amounts and some were just lucky for whatever content they posted.

1. How is @htyfn doing

That is the account that got two big welcome rewards for his first two posts - a joke and a cat photo, definitely not posts that deserve such initial encouragement. Well this was enough to encourage the author to continue posting more of the same not much interesting content and not original... without much luck for him however. A clear example of encouraging significantly a user that probably does not deserve to get these rewards for the kinds of posts he is contributing.

2. How is @seanmeeh42 doing

Here is an example of an actual user getting a good encouragement with his second post - an introduction. He seems to still getting the hang of things and has since posted just one more post about what he may actually write about on Steemit based on his areas of expertise and knowledge. This is a good way to encourage new users, though not sure if he actually deserved to get such a big reward for his introduction post... anyway, at least not wasted on copy/past content encouraging more copy/pasting.

3. How is @asolopreneur doing

Clear as day clickbait content, scoring a big reward for the third post and apparently continuing to post more of the same, though not very actively as you would expect after a successful post with big reward. Just lucky I guess, but apparently encouraged to continue doing more clickbait content as one would expect.

4. How is @bestfoodchoice doing

Posting non original content and getting two posts scoring big whale rewards, but soon after that corrected and before receiving them getting taken away by flagging the posts. Mistake, but fixed on time and as a result probably that user will stop posting or may actually start posting better content... will see, for the moment it seems he has given up on posting on Steemit.

5. How is @james1987 doing

Another user that does not seem to be posting original content, got a small reward for a post with a recipe that is most likely not an original content including the photo. The next two posts so far are also nothing special and are as non-original content as it seems, will see how things move from there.

6. How is @artists doing

After scoring a big reward for the second post of a photoshopped photo, non-original content, this one continues to post similar content apparently hoping to get lucky again. Encouraged by the big reward, but that got the wrong message apparently, though still hoping to get lucky and score another big reward. I have actually seen that happen to other similar authors that post similar kind of content, being active and persistent enough they may score multiple big rewards for posts that are a few days apart.

The above are just some examples how a single encouraging big reward for a crappy post can lead to more crappy content getting published in hope for getting lucky again and winning more as apparently these people are here just for the possible rewards they can get. There are of course people that do not manage to get away with their "cheat the system" way of clickbaiting whales and running away with some money and then there are also the people that can really be encouraged to post something interesting in the future. Regardless of the outcome one thing is clear, Whales should be more careful when they are voting, especially when they are voting at full power... they should not just vote for posts based on title and thumbnail, they need to check them out as otherwise Clickbait can really get the best out of them.

Wonder what you will find out next. I guess there be will short trends/hypes and then other topics will get whale love.

At these early days there wasn't this vote slider available, now they probably just would vote by 1%

These were surprisingly interesting to read! I like your analytical writing style, also.

Informative cautionary tales :)

Thank you - upvoted (of course).

That's pretty interesting. It's actually pretty reassuring -- people making poor quality posts may luck out early on, but over the longer term are unlikely to succeed enough to stick around or to siphon off much in the reward pool for everyone else.

Unfortunately, sometimes power also comes with irresponsibility.
