Is This Really the Best That Steemit Can Offer Right Now?

trending

I don't often look at the trending page, many other people on Steemit also don't, instead people prefer to use their Home (previously Feed page). The reason for that is really simple, most of the top rewarded posts that get on the Trending page are simply not worth the time to go through and read. You can see that the top rewarded posts are often from the same authors - celebrities or early adopters with high reputation and many of these people don't cover a lot of topics, so the content they create can really get boring after you follow them for a bit. Yet they still go Trending with every new post they make (of most of the time), unless of course they post some crap that will still get high reward, but may not be enough to be in the top trending posts. There are of course some exceptions, but you can see such rarely...

It seems that the people that should have paid most attention to the results, more specifically the second part, from the recent Steemit User Survey from @stellabelle have missed it and it is really important for them to note the results and what people think about the posts on the Trending page and other important questions about Steemit. It is an interesting read that can give a good insight of the current state of Steemit at the moment and what needs to change or improve in the future to make things better…

Let us take a look at the top 20 Trending posts for the last 24h...

Did you notice the trend here, half of the top trending posts on Steemit are about Steem/Steemit itself, not that this is bad or something, this is just one of the popular topics and a lot of people write about it, so it is just normal to have quite a bit of these on the Trending page as well.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I have just recently managed to get to a reputation of 60 myself, however I have done that with a lot of time spent on Steemit and a lot of hard work writing, curating and trying to make this a better place... and I don't think I ever made it to the Trending page, nor probably will. Not that it is something that bothers me or anything, I'm not aiming to or writing with the idea to get a post there anyway.

I'm just asking if this is the best that Steemit can offer right now?

Yes this is a problem.

Do you know why this problem exists?

Some whales, like @smooth, and other power users, pretty much only upvote certain people who have a 60+ reputation (not everyone who has 60+, only certain ones). They don't value the content for meaningful help of people, Steemit or the world. They just upvote for curation $$$$$$$$$$$$.

That is the problem with the Trending page. Peace.

This is one of the problems with Whale votes, yes, but is not the only one.

LOL, if you're not the Fonzie, you're not in the ponzie.

This place will be discovered by a few celebrities and that trending page will redefine drivel.

There's no escape!

I actually think some of the post were really good. I still upvoted you though.

I'm not judging the post themselves, saying they are bad for example, I'm just saying they may not be the best that Steemit has to offer in terms of really good content that can go Trending even at the moment, but for various reasons this is what is being selected as the best content at the moment...

I am invested in steemit and personally read a lot articles about steemit, the platform, steem price or any other information about steem. So I think using steemit as our platform, it is no surprise that topics related to Steemit, Steemit news and Steem price are very popular. To your question, I think we (the users) decide what gets on the trending page. So unless the interest of the majority changes, the topics will remain most likely the same.

I'm also writing about Steemit, the issue is not in writing about it however... it is to be expected that people write and read posts about it. As for who decides what gets Trending, can't agree that it is "we the users", unfortunately it is still mostly the Whales that decide... ;)

Few of us are likely to make it there. I'm not totally sure what gets onto Hot, but I assume Active means they are currently getting votes or comments. I mostly just look at my own feed, but I will check the others now and then to find new people. We need to get the Feed for other profiles as that was useful. It's still there if you edit the URL to be @user/feed

great post. where did you get that statistics?! are you on chat? if so, can you give me a sign? :)

Compiled it by hand from the Trending page, might automate something like that though for generating reports.

I'm still not using the Steemit chat, need to register at some point, though still prefer spending more time writing something good than just sitting and "chatting"... :)

Just registered to give the chat a try finally, the same username in there as here.

hehe. the chat will take over your life man...

Precisely why I did not want to join it for quite some time... :)
