I am seeing a number of posts where the number of upvotes is far greater than the view by more than 3:1, though I am sure there are worst ratios. What I get out of this is that some of you are just upvoting without even viewing the post which to me seems misplaced. And how bots play into this, I do not know, though my opinion of bots raises the question as to whether this is a decentralized human community or a bot-driven community? As you may have guessed I am not a complete fan of bots, though I am open to them being used in some applications though I am not sure how. If you do not view the post and upvote it, how do you know what you are upvoting, or is this just another tit for tat mentality. I voted for your post now you vote for mine. I personally do not want to play that game and while I am sure it will cost me in votes, I don't want your upvote if you re expecting me to upvote you regardless of content.
I like Steemit a lot and strive to produce quality posts as I want to build a quality community. It seems to me that bots have a degree of power that reminds me of corporate mass media that ensures only certain messages get through. I know a lot of people use bots and I understand the temptation. Some say that because others are doing it, they do it too. This mentality sort of reminds me of how and why the world is in such a disarray as it is. An argument of arms developers is, if we do not do it, someone else will and so the world spends far too much money on weapons and war and not enough on peace and freedom. So, I guess the question is to you folk is; are you trying to build the community or dominate the community?
Too many people, it seems to me, are here not to contribute to Steemit and building an online community, but are here to profit from Steemit. I see it in the lazy posts that consist of just a few links, I see it in the use of bots, I see it when you ask me to follow you just because you followed me or when you say I upvote you now you upvote me. These things do not contribute to making Steemit better over the long run but are entirely self-serving and frankly, that disturbs me if not outright saddens me.
I also see a lot of posts where they got a significant number of views and upvotes, but not one comment. Seriously? If a post is worthy of upvoting, is it not also worthy of comment? I appreciate that not everyone is comfortable with doing so, that for some the language of the post is not their first language and so are unsure how to say what they are thinking. But, for the rest of you who have no issue with the language why are you not commenting. To build a community we need to have a conversation as without open dialogue we cannot build anything. It isn't necessary that we all agree, but it is necessary that we respect our differences and share in those differences, for when we do, we become something greater than what we were.
This is my rant for today, thank you for taking the time to read it. Let's start a conversation, leave a comment below, ask a question, I would love to exchange ideas with you.

I agree. I think that you should not vote to vote or in search of a reputation or followers. I prefer to protect the meaning of what a community like this can have, with an incredible potential of interaction with all freedom, each one from our spaces.

I support individuality in its purest sense. But we are creatures with a primal herd mentality and for some, that results in a need to be a part of the largest herd, safety in numbers and all that. And in a society where fear is peddled by the mainstream media and people are overworked such, associations with large numbers plays into a false sense of security and the exclusion of anyone who doesn't play along.
Community, to commune, communicate. Communication is key to a community and I liken it to the forest where you have a different species with the ability to communicate with one another. It has been shown different species of birds recognize each other's songs. Trees communicate through their root systems and life flourishes the greater the variety. A successful forest is not a monoculture, the variety of life speaks of the need of individuality and communication among individual species therefore, for a blockchain community variety and individuality is of prima facie importance.

i think its to do with reputation (people not upvoting good posts, if they are not valuable).... and not voting on too many things wasting steem power maybe? i dont know im still unsure how i feel about it all, I am still new. But just plan to work hard and post everyday and whatever comes of it does i guess. Im not wasting my time trying to reach people on facebook and youtube anymore.

Thanks for commenting. Reputation may have something to do with it or something like they see it has lots of upvotes so they pile on their upvote, kind of like a herd mentality.
I once was concerned with reaching people, it was part of that recently awake thing and foolishly trying to wake others up unaware that people wake up when it is their time, that no amount of yelling from a mountaintop was going to wake them up until they are ready. I now see a lot of this all over the place.
The truly awake are very patient and understanding.
Though when it comes to climate change and grand solar minimum threatening the globe with an ice age, I do want to reach people with this message as the last three cycles of this nature reduced human population dramatically through starvation, disease and social unrest. Anthropogenic global warming was a scam built on snake oil science.
Other than that, my interest is to network with those that have similar interests, though every once and while I will troll what I deem the opposition. It is less about reaching people and more about improving myself. And like you, I plan to post quality content and be choosy with who I follow. And if I can make a couple of crypto coins along the way, fine.

You're completely right. If someone does the effort of writing a post, it's a pity if it's just good upvoted without being read.

It's more than that. How do you know what it is you are upvoting if you are not actually checking the post out? If we are building a community we need to communicate.
