China blocks "WhatsApp", how long before Steemit is China banned?

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

Now I read news that China just blocked WhatsApp. WhatsApp I think is owned by Facebook? Competes with WeChat? Yet we also know China is banning cryptocurrencies. Is Steemit officially banned in China or is it still accessible?

The disabling in mainland China of the Facebook-owned app is a setback for the social media giant, whose chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, has been pushing to re-enter the Chinese market, and has been studying the Chinese language intensively. WhatsApp was the last of Facebook products to still be available in mainland China; the company’s main social media service has been blocked in China since 2009, and its Instagram image-sharing app is also unavailable.

Considering Facebook is caught up in a Russia controversy could this also have influenced China to decide to ban? Does China know something about Facebook that we don't? Can anyone from China comment on why this is happening (Facebook ban, WhatsApp ban, Cryptocurrency ban).

Well i hope China wont ban Steemit but it seems its an attempt at having control over the citizens. THEY BAN A PARTICULAR PRODUCT OR SERVICE AND COME UP WITH THE CHINESE VERSION.

Yes, they can ban Steemit, can they enforce it? No. If the Chinese want to use WhatsApp they can use TOR or a VPN to access it. Banning Steemit it's like banning Bitcoin, Governments can create a law that bans it, but they cant eforced it.

They would ban steemit if they've heard about it due to it being uncensorable. Probably just a matter of time if steemit continues to gain adoption.

haha, they are really crazy, they ban even google, not a good way to improve the life, they are very selfish, and not openmined I am talking about their goverment, they don't want to let people live a good life, I think if they ban steemit it will not harm the website, it just will be more clean because chineese post are not making good english posts earning that good money, I know a lot of people writing very good posts in English but earning cents while some Chineese people writing couple words and earning hundreds.

it's crazy.

I feel there is a big difference between Steem and WhatsApp.

As you stated, WhatsApp competes with a Chinese product. Also, I dont buy the banning of crypto...what the Chinese government is going after is control of the market. The state will end up having the mining and the exchanges.

Steemit will be tough to ban since it is a technological platform and the second they try to ban it, people will figure a way around it. Decentralization allows for messages to get through where they are banned via traditional communication methods.

Steemit is not big enough yet in China to be banned, still long way to go..

Boxmining might be a good person to ask. I am curious if people can get around the great firewall, or how easy/safe it is to do so.

They could probably use the Tor browser to view just about any page.

Crazy all-controlling states.

But I am quite sure this fate will pass Steemit — they do not see a threat in it so far. WhatsApp's scale is way bigger. They try to control the communications channels, Steemit is standing aside from the mainstream, thus it is safe, IMHO.
