Effective Altruism Global - "Do Good Better"

What is Effective Altruism?

In a previous post I discussed consequentialism and how consequentialist ethics are outcome based. Effective altruism is all about being good at doing good. It's not enough to feel good about doing good but in order to be good at doing good you have to measure the impact of your ethical decisions and try to continuously improve upon it.

What is the Effective Altruism Global conference?

Effective Altruism Global is an annual conference for people who are interested in evidence based social improvements. To anyone who is a consequentialist and also in a position to give back, this conference might be for you.

Anyone who might be interested in using Steemit for altruistic purposes might want to have a look at this video:

If the video intrigues you then you might want to go to the conference and represent Steem. In my opinion Steem should be part of the discussion at this conference.

An idea for Steemit? Reputation based reward networks

This is a concept I invented and blogged about a while back which could put into practice effective altruism using the mechanics of Steemit. I'll list the five steps which make a reputation lottery work below:

Reputation lotteries can leverage greed to encourage effective altruism

  1. In order to enter the lottery you must be able to prove you did the specified act of altruism. This can easily be shown by a blockchain transaction for example.
  2. For every altruistic interaction you shall receive points which can be traded in for lottery tickets.
  3. The more lottery tickets you have the greater your chance to win the rewards.
  4. All who enter the lottery are guaranteed to receive a permanent badge of honor for having participated whether they win or not. This would encourage the participants to continue playing into the future.
  5. Participants can be human or machine.

UPDATE: Anyone who liked the idea for reputation lotteries should have a look at this post exclusively on that topic: https://steemit.com/steem/@dana-edwards/reputation-lotteries-can-leverage-greed-to-encourage-effective-altruism

I've posted an article, a few days ago, on why it "pays" to be good on an internal level. The effects of the mechanism I'm describing are far and beyond legal repercussions, ethics / morality and religious penalties or rewards: https://steemit.com/subconscious/@alexgr/the-subconscious-observer-and-its-effect-on-our-life-and-human-potential

Superb post.

good triumphs over evil , @dana-edwards

I think as a community we have incentives to make altruistic contributions. For example in my write up that I made this morning (https://steemit.com/steemit/@calaber24p/steemit-is-poised-to-rival-kickstarter ) I talked about how steem as a platform can be used to benefit people looking for funding on kickstarter but this could easily be used for something like kiva or helping small villages build a well. I think communal altruism can possibly help us do more than individual altruism, but it might just be something we would have to see in practice. Anyway great write up.

This actually sounds like a great idea. Could you expand a bit more? How would you measure how many points each good deed earns? Or would you define a specific good deed for each lottery?

I've been struggling hard to find every good method to post i try every , maybe my writting skill arent so good for blogging yet .its true the more lottery u buy the biggest changes you have . but not everyone can afford to buy huge ticket . sometimes people jist have to work harder. Last but not least mind to drop by at my blog , tell me what should i do . I want to be whales !! LoL

Your posts are really valuables, i learn a lot with them, thank you for share

I have little in my life, but i help, all time, I give money for persons, what really need this, I give pet food and medicines, I adopted my cat and dog, when one pet need help, I help the pet.

I study psychology and I give my work free in the foundations, really I want changes lives of the persons and I believe, what steemit can help.

The people of the steemit can changing pieces of the world.

Never I say, I go for steemit for make my rich, all time, I say, I go for steemit for treat changes lifes.

Sorry for my bad english, this not my strong.

And the blockchain can help the world see these little things you do. It's the benefit of having the transparancy (which is a double edged sword). It's only a matter of time before some smart person codes up an easy to use toolkit for bots and I'm aware of Sharebits from Bitshares so it's likely something which can be done on Steem either through sidechain or by using Steem to fund development of something more sophisticated.

Steembots.io would be what I'd use and then make a toolkit to enable this stuff. Let people connect their tokens from Bitshares or other networks and in the background have smart contracts direct rewards. Don't worry about not being good at English because Steem is global and benefits from all languages.
