This is my attempt at featuring some unbiased comparisons between a handful of people you may know and the #trending page. Thanks for stopping by!

I did this article a few weeks ago and used it as my contender at kitchen #fff—a weekly cooking competition with a handful of your fellow steemians. It’s a baked potato, no big deal, but I documented each step for the sake of #food and community. Inside the article are 15 images, six shout-outs and five external links. Cook time is less than an hour but I originally typed it out on my phone—that took another hour and a half plus 30 minutes for images—two hours typing time. I copied the article, letter for letter and punctuation for punctuation backwards, from my phone to the iPad, I’m not sure how long that took. However long for rearrangements and editing—results: 33 Upvotes worth .30 cents and 39 engagements. Congratulations!
I just found this photo of a portion of a flower captured by @mandela. The article has one sentence—six words. It generated 73 Upvotes worth $9.60 and 0 engagement in the first hour. Congratulations!
Here’s a pizza article by @sivehead. It’s a month old, it only has one image and one shout-out but nearly every wOrd in the body of his post starts with a P, have you ever seen anyone do that?? He entered it in that same #cooking community I entered mine in, with about eight other chefs. It generated 11 engagements and 30 Upvotes worth .54 cents. Congratulations!
Here’s an article posted by @eladnan called Pets—one sentence and No cover image. In the first hour on the #blockchain it generated 23 Upvotes worth $5.52 and 0 engagement. Congratulations!
This article was written by @thebigsweed upon discovery of a 50 year old newspaper. He explains past world events from each section of the newspaper and compares them to current events. The article has 25 images, four external links, one YouTube clip and three shout-outs. It generated 29 Upvotes worth .12 cents and 9 engagements. Congratulations!
Here’s one called ”Winter.” It’s one beautiful picture, of a picture, of a winter home in Bulgaria. With only two sentences, one picture and one tag, it generated 42 Upvotes worth $28.22 and three engagements in 11 hours. Congratulations!
This article was posted by @jlsplatts at the beginning of December. It’s a documented trip of him and his kids going to Home Depot where his kids were building things with other kids and they spent the entire day together as a family. Inside are 11 pictures, two shout-outs and his first tag is #family. It generated 30 Upvotes worth .52 cents and nine engagements. Congratulations!
Here’s one photo of three horses posted by @mitgtv18. It’s a #colorchallenge photo—the color was green. It contains one picture and one sentence and it generated 171 Upvotes worth $10.03 and one engagement in three hours. Congratulations!
This article is from another food blog written by @puravidaville. It’s a step by step, 3-part Southwestern Salad with 24 ingredients. The article has 18 pictures, eight external links and six shout-outs. It generated 53 Upvotes worth .76 cents and 36 engagements. Congratulations!
This is a picture of sushi rolls posted by @makesushi. The article has one sentence, three pictures of the same image and one link to his YouTube channel. It generated 77 Upvotes worth $57.97 and 10 engagements in 11 hours. Congratulations!
I really like what you have done here. Just a simple comparison of engagement, effort, upvotes, and payouts. I honestly feel that this kind of comparisons show the reason why many people don’t stick around. They see posts that seem to exert little effort getting a good size payout and their effort of 3-4 hours and sometimes longer don’t get a payout enough to get a stick of hard bubble gum. You know the ones that came in the baseball card packs?? No not the pack of cards, just the left over gum is what I am talking about. Most throw it away because it will break your teeth and tastes like poo. So who would buy it.

And it’s not even the dollar amount as much as the lack of concern by the people in the tending section. It’s not good for the platform and they’re still doing it... “lack of concern,” that bothers me. Monetary value, sure, a big reward is awesome but really, with you, my wife, Sweed, Sive and the other many loyal followers we both have, it’s each of your opinions that are valuable to me.
Ruining the platform is worthless to me. What do you think, really? You’re seeing the spam accounts in full force just like I am.. ‘they’re baaaacccckk.’ Add the current idea of a trending section plus the lack of registrations and what do you think? Is the platform sustainable? Somehow, something or someone has to squash those trending posts, no?
I’m glad you liked this article brother Splatts, I gotta admit I didn’t want to hit post for fear I would come across as a cry baby or something.. that’s not it! I’d just like the people in the trending section to understand they’re killing us. <— not figuratively.
Thanks for stopping by @jlsplatts, I love your responses.

Most of not all have paid their way there with bidbots. You know for visibility :wink:wink. Most people don’t even look at the trending page anyway from what I have gathered. Yet I do see lots of engagement on some of them.
We just keep grindin’ out here in the real world doin’ our thing.

Well good morning! I’m glad you didn’t miss this one, too, janton! Does that mean you got your new computer? Is your hash power through the roof now or what? God bless you and yours the same.
I haven’t posted anything this week, Christmas and friends stopping by the apartment, I haven’t really been too concerned with putting out content this week. I’ll definitely round up a food fight contender for today but I think that’s the extent of my posting week.
I have one I’ve been working on for a little while that I’m releasing on Monday though, you’re gonna love it! Maybe a little religion... maybe some polygamy... 😉
Thanks for stopping by @janton, always a pleasure hearing from you.

Sadly I haven't been able to find time for a longish post recently. That said though, I did comment to wifey on this topic a while back. I said to her that I had noticed, I could spend hours on a post of longish, to me, length and hardly earn anything, yet my shorter posts often earned more.
I most confess though, that I do sometimes just throw up a photo with a couple of words just for the sake of staying active. A 'Shit post' if ya'like! I do try to make it worth looking at... maybe slightly humorous if I can, but its Usually because I haven't come up with anything even half decent to post.
Hope you and yours have a great Christmas @dandays

Does seem like a bit of a disparity..
A picture is worth 1000% more on upvotes?
That's one thing I noticed about this site.. no slow burns and builds. you get the votes you get as a snapshot and that is it..

I enjoy this community and this is literally my first social networking experience, trip out on that, right? Instaprogram, Facebooking, etc. never did any of them. Even someone like me, who’s inexperienced in social media land understands good content vs everything else.
There’s only two options, either content worth reading or one by one, everyone will exit the platform and new registrations will cease to exist (sound familiar?) and all of our feeds will be full of articles with one image and a sentence. I’m an optimist... I’m hoping for the best!
Thanks for stopping by @darrenfj, I love hearing thoughts! Happy holidays to you and yours.and happy Sunday, too! 😉

I'm just thinking about the slow burns.. the non-viral stuff. I tell you, you tell a friend, they tell another.. only the first few votes get credited towards the rewards..

Thanks for the Resteem man, I really appreciate that! I almost asked you on a different comment what you meant by “write my pain report” but it didn’t make sense to do it way over there.
What do you mean?

I don't know if you noticed, but the posts that you selected with the most rewarded were paid posts, meaning that they used a bid bots to boost their content, so at the end of the day they didn't make much.
I'll share a post about bid bots if you are not familiar with it. It one of the reason for the Steemit exile, the bid bots...

I’m with you. The intended message in this post was actually for those people paying to promote their post. But it’s obvious I didn’t get their attention. Shooot, conversations with you, like this and one on one is my trending section.
Ed Privat conversations... Fresh sticky icky... blue skies and sunny, time to hang out with myself by myself cuz my wife is still sleeping, what a great day... man, it feels like Christmas. It must be Christmas.

Actually there's 2 posts, that didn't get their upvote through bid bots, so it's all about who you know on Steemit, if you are friends with influential people, you can actually grow and make a profit. There's nothing wrong about it, it's a free market!
If someone wants to invest let's say a million dollars in SP and upvote themselves 3 times a day, they are allowed to!
I am just playing the devil's advocate here, because it's obvious that the examples you chose deserved a big upvote too! Maybe what we need is more manual curators with SP

You’re absolutely right dude, free market, self Upvotes, paid for, it’s all fair game.
I just don’t think anyone will be here talking about this exact subject, or anything else, music, stories, comedy, etc. if everyone’s feeds are full of articles with one picture and a sentence. Because we’re already seeing people vanish.. we’re already not seeing new registrations. It’ll suck if ‘steemit’ became The platform for trending posts and people like any of those people I mentioned go elsewhere.
edit
Danget! I meant to answer the Santa one here. Would you believe we don’t buy each other gifts? Yeah, what we do is, we write one story that we enjoyed from the current year. We add one picture that we enjoyed from the current year. We write one thing we’d like to attain/acquire in the next year and hand each other what we’ve written. That’s it man. We’ve been together for like 3 or 4 or 5 or however many Christmas's now, makes
Shopping easy.
What about you? Did you get something great? Tell
Me
A little about your Christmas dude. Kids, wife, what’s normal today? Family, friends, anything? C’mon man.. you know I don’t have those kinda stories.

We actually almost forgot put a Christmas tree until my son insisted! It just tells you how involved we are with the tradition, I have nothing against it, but I personally feel very disconnected from it, and we don't have money to spend in expensive presents anyway, so we don't offer anything to each other neither, and only buy gifts for the kids of course.
I know that's probably not the standard way to raise kids, we almost forgot Halloween too, they are being homeschooled, and they've never watched a program on TV in their entire life, they're the Youtube generation, customizing their preferences from the get go...
So yeah, we not your typical nuclear family... Maybe when we move out of SA we will adopt more "normal" behavior for today's society...
Until then society can suck a bag of d...
I think the true reason is just monetary... I can ensure you that when(if) there will be more money to be made, people will come back, everybody will post 3 times a day, everyone will comment again, because there will be an incentive.Hell I will even comment 3 times in a row on all of these shitposts if I have to.
Just kidding, but I get your point, I am thinking the same thing as you, or at least I used to .
Now I think, that if this dude wants to put 100 dollars on the table so his son's pic is on the trending page, good for him, good for his son, and merry fucking Christmas
It's always the same thing on the trending page anyway, it's always about the new "great project" that is supposed to save Steem.
Steem is just fine, wait for that sweet bullish market to kick in, and all them bitch'es will come back tail between the legs...
