I would like to ask you Steemians what you think about voting for oneself?
I do vote for myself quite often. I justify it to myself by arguing that my vote isn't worth a huge amount and I value the content I post.
As of yet, I have never upvoted any comments I have made although I may do if the comment is long and adding value.
What do you think?!
Technically speaking, and ethically even, the system allows you to vote however you see fit. That means upvoting your same shitty comments you post over and over again at $150+ a pop, if you wanted to (some do).
However, that doesn't mean there won't be consequences for acting like a selfish me, me, me, now, now, now, non-forward looking thinker. People who vote like that are not seeing the long term picture here at Steemit. They catch flags and others write posts bashing their greediness. I have too much pride to even consider voting like a selfish asshole.
As for posts, I upvote almost all of mine for multiple reasons. I value the time I spent on writing it, it definitely helps give it some traction when it hits the wall, and I don't post every day so it's not really a drain on the pool by any stretch of the imagination.
For comments, I don't know if I have ever upvoted one of my own. I would consider it (and have seen others do it, I just haven't) if I made a comment and wanted to get it to the top as to not be buried at the bottom of a bunch of "nice post's."
With all that said, I have noticed my voting behavior has changed a little since the rise in STEEM. Throwing 40 cents at someone is easy every time. Throwing $1.60 at someone every time requires more thought on if I should be sliding my bar down a little or not. Just something I noticed lately.
I'm rambling, those are my thoughts. Thanks for the post!

Thanks. Great comment and worth an upvote from me. Good point re getting comment higher up by voting.

Great response. I definitely agree that there is a difference between upvoting comments compared to ones post. I personally, also think its fine to upvote your own post but would shy away from upvoting your own comments as these are really not adding a whole lot of value to the community comparatively to a post.

I think you just wrote the guideline for voting for oneself

I think it's a good exercise in self-esteem. We could all use an upvote from ourselves. : )

I'm still working this site out at the moment but I think that you could do it to promote your own content?
I accidentally upvoted my first post :/ and feel bad haha
Is there a way to un upvote your own stuff? I can't find it.

I think its fine personally and I do it as well. To be quite honest I think just about everyone does and the fact there is a button for it at the bottom of every post make it seem like steemit devs even support it lol

I respectfully disagree with you that just about everyone upvotes themselves. I tend to reserve my votes for those who do not, and I find plenty of folk who appear to do the same.
Carrying your argument forward; up to the last hard fork, the self upvote button at the bottom of your post was ticked by default, now it isn't, so it looks like the developers changed their minds.

Thank you for your comments and thoughts @deirdyweirdy You've definitely been on this platform much longer than I. However, when starting out an looking into this very question, it did appear as tho. much more people upvoted their own post than those who did not. I think @intothewild did bring up a good point tho. as I have noticed that by upvoting your own post does help gain it traction at first. Especially for minnows like myself who are trying to gain a following at the beginning, just my two cents tho. Thank you for your thoughts and update about the bottom at the bottom of the post. :)

Yes, perhaps you have a point, however, by voting yourself a measly one or 2 cent and getting no boost to your reputation, you may miss the chance of a vote from someone with a higher rep who seeks to reward those voting in a manner she regards as more helpful to the platform.
Please don't read any criticism into my reply. I do not contend that my system is better or more ethical, I simply find the paying forward system more helpful to others and rewarding for me personally.

I look at it like a busker with a guitar case in front of her. It just looks more appealing to have a bit of change in the case when she is performing and draws people in :)

While I respect the right of each to do with his vote as he wishes, I've always believed that that self praise is no praise at all, so i don't upvote my own work.

I personally don't have a problem with self upvotes. I think this might be a problem if one has a huge upvote @dannyshine
