Here’s a Hint: Blogging for Dummies is # 2.

Please believe me, I was not planning to post anything today on Steemit. With all the excitement of the past few days on here, I was looking forward to a relaxing day with my family. No writing, no posting.

Then I happened to check on the Steemit 101 e-book that a team of us wrote last month. Through its free giveaway period, we managed to get more than 1000 copies of this book in peoples’ hands. I’d like to think that this campaign has played a small role in Steemit’s great success here in recent days.

One of my goals, when we did the free e-book giveaways, was to propel this book into a category bestseller so that Amazon would promote it for us. Well, Steemit 101 is making a steady climb up to # 6 in one category and # 18 in another.

But when I checked it today, I saw this:

Ladies and gentlemen, Amazon has chosen Steemit 101 as its # 1 HOT NEW RELEASE for the Blogging and Blogs category! We beat out Blogging for Dummies, which was released around the same time!

The Hot New Release list is both curated and organic (based on sales), so it may look different by the time you see it, but that screenshot is what I saw when I checked it today. The longer we stay up there, the more people will find out about Steemit.

Here is a link to the book: https://www.amazon.com/Steemit-101-Discover-Social-Content-ebook/dp/B01HC47NLU

Thanks to everyone for your hard work in promoting this book so far. Even now, the e-book is only 99 cents in the US, and also available in the UK, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Mexico, Australia, and India. All profits are being re-invested in promoting the book and promoting Steemit. We will make it available to more people in more countries soon. And the book also will be supplemented with a major update in the next couple of weeks.

I just have to say it: Why is Steemit # 1? Because THIS is blogging for dummies! –Tom, aka @donkeypong

Wow, congratulations! :-)

I already guessed it before reading xD is there a prize giveaway :). By the way, are there any localization efforts going on? (translation)

Prize: I'll send you 1 Steem Dollar (on the way!). We are locked up with the Amazon exclusive for a few more weeks, but after that we can make other digital copies of the book available elsewhere. Yes, a number of people have approached me about translating it into other languages. If you would like to discuss this, please contact me on the Slack Channel.

Great and thanks! Just saw it, didn't know one can do that! Alright check, will be up on Slack soon :)

That is fantastic. Kudos to you and your co-authors for bringing such incredible value to this community!

Just picked up my copy, look forward to reading it! Congrats on the #1 spot!

that's cool!

But if steemit is billed mainly as a place to go to make money from what you post, won't it attract mainly people who want to extract value from it? It seems an awful lot like a ponzi scheme.

We tried to explain it well in the book, but the money aspect motivates a lot of people. Someone could do a separate book about the blockchain aspects, the decentralization of content, or take it from any other perspective. Those parts are in our book, too, but for most discovering it now, the chance to be paid for delivering quality content seems to be the idea that has most mass appeal.

I guess my point is, if people are coming to steemit to get paid for their content, where is the money going to come from?

The economics are pretty complex. You'll need to spend some time reading about it. Basically, you get paid in cryptocurrency and the supply is programmed to increase at a certian amount each day, rather like the US dollar or other fiat currencies have inflation. Only here, the rate of increase is set and therefore predictable.

I'm familiar with cryptocurrency in general. And I understand the value of cryptos can be very volatile and seems to be based largely on speculation. The economics of it really aren't particularly complex. It's supply and demand... the question I have is where does the demand come from? If the demand comes from people wanting it to trade it for some other currency, that's speculation. If people are willing to buy in with other forms of currency it may be more sustainable, provided that form of demand is maintained.

We're out of layers in this reply tree, so I can't respond to your last one. But basically, there are three different cryptocurrencies at work here: Steem Power is a higher level vesting share with greater voting rights, and each person is paid partly in that; Steem Dollars are a price stable currency that everyone is paid in and can convert to Steem Power or Steem as they wish, or transfer out; Steem is the "volatile" liquid currency. Most people are not exposed to the whims of a volatile market, especially when they stay within the Steemit economy. But at the same time, when they cash out, they can capitalize on any appreciation. Where doe sthe value come from? Everything is perception in any currency or economy. Here there is a valuable social media platform and a large community of people being paid out in the native crypto; other cryptos tend to be supported only by pure speculation without such an economy or a value that can appreciate with the organic growth of the platform.

That kind of just sidesteps my concern. On the open market, Steem would seem to have a lot more people interested in selling than buying. What reason would people have to want to buy Steem with other currencies? I can imagine a lot of people wanting to sell Steem to get paid for their contribution, but what is going to provide support for the price?

Amazeballs! I have it. I need to finish reading it :)

This is awesome @donkeypong !! I'm about to grab a copy myself. I see the future of Steemit having tons of potential and it's great that your book has reached #1. Congrats on that ! This will definitely expose many more people to Steemit and if they don't blog or post already, they might even give it a shot.

Congratuations. Great work!

Oh shit, I've finished the book but haven't made the review yet, I need to make one soon. Most of the chapters in the book are the ones I've already read on Steemit but it's still a smooth read. Btw, Is the 200 SP reward for review still available? :P hahahaha I guess I'm too late for that now.

Thanks. Yes, the book is primarily a way to reach a different audience; anyone here on Steemit probably knows most of the basic info already. We can't give money for reviews, unfortunately.

Great job!
I buy one yesterday, but didn't have time to read. will write a review for it later.

Yay, good stuff. I'll look at getting a copy too.

Good post. Keep it up! Thank you for promoting Steem. People need to know about this.

I read this book before joining Steemit, It is great and well written. Will you (and the other contributers) be writing anymore soon? @donkeypong
