Facebook Starting Its Own Blockchain Division

in steemit •  7 years ago

David Marcus, who led the Messenger division at Facebook, just announced he will take on "another challenge", namely the Blockchain division inside Facebook.

It may look like just a small announcement from an obscure team at Facebook, but I believe this is going to be huge.

Keep an eye on this "small team starting from scratch"...

Wanna know when you're getting paid?

I know the feeling. That's why I created steem.supply, an easy to use and accurate tool for calculating your Steemit rewards

It's free to use, but if you think this is a useful addition, I'd appreciate your witness vote.

Thank you!

Hahaha fb banned blockchain promotion ads and now they are startin blockchain.m Hillarious 😂

Maybe this was the reason why they banned it? No better way to ensure their own success than to ban all other mention of competitors!

I think Facebook was genuinely trying to stop ICO promotions on unsuspecting users, not silence potential competitors. They are doing a poor job though, I still get scammy ICO advertisements while the MIT Bitcoin Club is banned from promoted our events.

Yes, you are probably right. It is a bit over-the-top to block ads from competitors, but it still feels a little weird if they end up creating a coin or token while still banning all mentions of other cryptos.

To get started they must offer to buy Steemit for atleast $10 billion...

If I was Zuckerberg I would probably start buying up steemit. He could probably get between 1 and 10% of it maybe but I think it would be hard to get much more than that. If we could just get one big bullish investor I bet the price of steem would really rise.

I would much rather prefer if they stay far away from Steemit!

I'm surprised they haven't just bought up Steem when it was cheap and taken over the network. It wouldn't be difficult with their kind of money.

hahaha these are the people who were saying that crypto is a shit. now they are moving to crypto related technology.
What a win!

I am very happy to vote you as a witn3ess.

Thanks, appreciate it! :)

Was just reading about this.... Great to see the full text. Not so sure if this is a good or bad thing.... Or it's just there.

By the way, great job with stemmit.supply.... Used it like 60secs ago. I don't have to scroll through my comments anymore... Haha

I wouldn’t expect Facebook to launch its own cryptocurrency in the near future. This is likely just an exploratory mission that’s designed to figure out how blockchain could fit into the social network and to ensure that if the technology really is the future, Facebook doesn’t get left behind. Earlier this year, Zuckerberg did mention that he intended to take a deeper dive into blockchain this year.

Blockchain across Facebook? Mehn this is gonna be huge. This is one thing we should look out for at this time .

wow. good news it is.

Wow? Blockchain on Facebook? Does that mean anything of threat to steemit?

It could be, but it might now ;) It really depends on what Facebook plans to do with the technology.

its a gigantic process i think
very good effort best of luck

This guy could buy the biggest fucking boat and just wave his schlong at the great waterfront cities around the world while he counts the zeros in his bank balance. Why in the improbable fuck, does he want to go into an office everyday where he has to sit under fluorescent lighting and not touch the interns? That is true madness my friends.
He is a sick, hoodie wearing, duck, that had to be crammed into his father’s suit and berated by idiots, who happened to convince 51% of the other idiots in their district that they aren’t as shitty as some other bastard. Schmuck.

This is great news. It shows alot of people now trust the blockchain and they believe its the future. Good

Hahaha. Is that a joke or what ?
Doesn't Facebook ban ads of the block chain based network.

Its so informatic and your content is so good.

Is it possible on facebook? It will be amazing.

Note that he mentioned P2P payments on Messenger. I'm guessing Facebook would add crypto to that feature first, or to their marketplace, rather than paying for content.

Sound like to little and to late , they are in trouble and have less and less active users from week to week

The young generation hate them

But Facebook's privacy sucks!! Don't know how this will settle down. Let's see.

@dragosroua,
What they started STEEM already implemented :D

Cheers~

Some good opportunities coming forward us. Good news.

starting from scratch
with over 2000 other block chains already in existence to examine.
and an unlimited budget.
gee...they've got it rough.

Fb is just confirming it takes blockchain very seriously as it is seeing its platform is the past and present business model but platforms as Steemit are the future.
More and more Fb users are complaining about censorship, private data usage and visualizing algorithm controlling what you get to see on your wall. All that is due to maximizing benefit for just the centralized company Facebook is today, and that business model started to end when Bitcoin was born.
It is a clever movement to start exploring new Business Models while you still enjoy a nice revenue stream, the question here is if they will manage to "clean" their centralized image and be able to emerge as a decentralized company. I have my concerns they will do.

Hmm, this is pretty interesting. I wonder how Facebook is planning on using this technology for their platform. I don't really see them making a reward system like the one we got here on Steemit, but there are other ways that they could utilize the blockchain technology for their platform.

Blockchain across Facebook?

What most here in the comments don't seem to understand blockchain! =crypto.

We have to wait in what direction Facebook is going.
Everything else is not worth the effort.

What are the possible implications of this @dragosroua? I can't work out how that would work on a platform that is already centralised but I probably don't really understand enough about block chain technology yet to get it.

Can you have a centralised block chain, for example?

Given how incredible Messenger's rise has been in the last four years, this suggests to me that FB is making a big bet on blockchain. This guy has crushed it once, maybe he can do it again.

this could also be a threat for steemit, what do you think about it? Man i wanted to talk to you but you never answer me , in the while please consider to follow me ì, thanks

Wow. I did think this was possible. I'm very curious as well. I think there will be a lot of growing pains with this if they try to switch everything over to a blockchain model early on. I wonder how they will integrate blockchain technology? Anyone have guesses? Are we looking at a full-on "steem-like" version of Facebook?

This is really huge they can do wonder they have a great team backup

Thing is --- I don't trust 'em. Not. One. Bit.

  • Will it protect your privacy? They don't now.
  • Will it protect your data? They don't now.
  • How will they use this to monetize more of YOU and NOT give you any financial incentive for doing so?
  • How will this blockchain be governed?
  • Will it be private or public, permissioned or permissionless?

I don't trust 'em.

"Now we will store all your personal data on the blockchain so we can use it even better " :))

I'm surprised that it has taken this long for an announcement to come out. They've been prepping for this for a while. Still, it could be a huge game-changer.

@dragosroua great news it is...........

I was actually waiting for something like this for a while!
Thank you for sharing!

What a pleasing WAO!! News there.

That should be expected. Blockchain is taking over as the next BIG REVOLUTION!

Here we go, it looks like the same scenario when nokia refused to get Android technology but now they've used it and working on it, same as Facebook banned promotion of crypto currency saying it's shit and now they're upto it, well we must look forward to it in a positive way, it's a good initiative by them no doubt.

Yes, what Facebook does not want to do! Tomorrow tell us you want to fly to Mars in 2 months. I do not use iorgendwas where I have ABG's but formally all rights from pictures, etc. to Facebook. Then Blockchain and be paid as Steemit. Good way to make my recordings for money. Here I have a lot more freedom.

Well, that was fast. Sounds like they may even be serious, too. Increasing from 300 million to over a 1 billion users is a cool feat. In my experience though, it's harder to get the first 300 million (or wherever the tipping point is). You still have to have something to offer and not ruin things, but a lot of the growth starts coming from the product's own inertia.

Now, the announcement doesn't say they're exploring their own blockchain, though that may well be what they're doing. But without that specificity, my guess is they're looking at many blockchains, and if so, eventually, they take a look at STEEM.

I guess it will come down to whether or not it makes sense to them to use their own blockchain, and develop it over a longer period of time (whatever that might be), or decide a little B2B agreement is in order and park themselves with a SMT atop the only socialized blockchain currently running and proven. :)
