In a fascinating book called Reinventing Organizations, Frederic Laloux identifies 5 types of management types, tied up to 5 distinct organizations. For the impatient, here's the correspondence between the colors and the type of the organization:
And here's a brief description of their basic characteristics:
Type | Description | Breakthroughs | Examples |
---|---|---|---|
Wolf Pack | Constant exercise of power by chief to keep soldiers in line | Division of labor, Command and authority | organized crime, street gangs, tribal militias |
Army | Highly formal roles within a hierarchical pyramid | Stable and scalable hierarchies, Replicable processes | Catholic church, military, most government organizations (public schools, police departments) |
Machine | Beat competition and achieve profit and growth | Meritocracy, Innovation | Multinational companies, Investment banks |
Family | Culture and empowerments as tools for motivation | Empowerment, Stakeholder model | Best practices businesses: Southwestern Airlines, Zappos |
Living Organism | Organizations are seen as living entities | Self-management, Wholeness | tbd |
I made these rough sketches (by the way, you can find this info in a much better form just by doing a search on the internet on "teal organizations") to come to the point of the title.
And the point is: what color Steemit is, at this moment, based on this model?
In my opinion, Steemit is balancing between red and amber. Between a street gang management and an emerging hierarchy.
I know, you're shocked. But that's the truth. Although there isn't a formally enforced hierarchy, the goal is to make money by using the tools as efficient as one can. Whales are the bosses, they can kick out anyone. In the past, this thing happened more than once. Sometimes because there was a misunderstanding between bosses, sometimes in the name of a good outcome (like the whales no voting experiment).
Every once in a while, though, Steemit is creeping in the orange area, where meritocracy, or the ability to create compelling and engaging content, is rewarded. I know, people come here because of this promise, but it's not what they get. The way social roles are established in Steemit makes for a more autocratic and rigid activity.
What Gives?
As long as there will be room for evolution and change, as long as the actual chiefs in command are courageous enough to promote people not because of their "loyalty", but because of their skills and contribution, things will change.
Time will tell.
Also, looking forward to be challenged, with arguments, obviously.

If you're new to Steemit, you may find these articles relevant (that's also part of my witness activity to support new members of the platform):
This is an interesting analogy, but I disagree with it just slightly.
I would't look at Steemit as an entity as described above, because I don't think it quite fits. But to carry your analogy on a bit into something that seems more accurate (to me at least), I would characterize Steemit as the landscape that is inhabited by wolves and armies and families etc.
The landscape itself doesn't really care about its inhabitants, it just is. The inhabitants form groups based around what works for them...
So we have whale packs (wolves in whale clothing) and their hangers-on - the dolphins and minnows that want to one day dominate their pack, or start their own pack and be the alpha male (or female).
You have armies of curators that band together and get organised to vote on posts.
I'm not too sure how many machines we have, but their are bound to be one or two in the mix.
We see a lot of family type groups on Steemit, and that's nice. These are the people who not only vote for each other, but support each other both online and in the real world.
As for the living organism, I don't think we will see a true version of that while their is money on the table.
And so, that is the Steemit landscape. It's an interesting place to roam.
Of course none of this describes Steemit.com as a business. I'm sure they are all just lovely and are possibly more of a family than a company (at least I hope so).
What do you think? Have I got it completely wrong?
What group would you identify as being a part of?

That is indeed far more accurate and I totally agree with this analogy. It's just that, in the beginning, a wolf pack mentality tends to be dominant. Like I said, I have nothing against it or for it, it's just the way it is. But in some corners of Steemit it's true that some machines and families are forming and, probably, some living organisms as well.
Very well put :)

I would not say all of it. It is social, so families and other social bonds form naturally. Considering money involvement, well... i can't blame them. Most of these guys have been here ages before me, so they have to take their premium. But i see a lot of effort from their side to curate and support new members. The way curation works now is not at it's best but hey look left top corner. It says beta. And some whales work pretty hard to compensate it with their time, which they are not forced to do at all. It is just hard to find that good content right now as it is a bit messy. And having in mind other alternatives.... facebook? Google? Insta... well facebook again. There is one whale in total there. And i love the community here. Would i do what i am doing here anyway if i am not paid? Absolutely. And of course it is incentive when you get even paid for that. Amazing. I could earn so much more doing other things, time wise, hence i am really sorry for these people who are doing posting just for the money. They must feel miserable.

Interesting take. Sometimes it does feel that way. But unless there's some drama with the wales it's a kind of meritocracy and luck to be noticed. Most of my post, for example, have quite a bit of research behind them with my own take on what I'm talking about. Some do really well, way above my expectation, and others barely make a few cents... So ... To me it seems it's more a matter of luck. Good work will be rewarded, but only if you're noticed. But I dread the idea of an authoritarian platform. The whole point of me coming here was to escape censorship.. Hope it doesn't envelop Steemit too.

I am still new here, but to me it looks like mechanical wolf-pack with an army of bots right now :) But i believe it will evolve.

you say wolf pack like it's a bad thing.
I'd also note that with the rise of the self made dolphins the whales MUST be loosing some relative power.

Nope, I don't say it like it's a bad thing. I say it because that's how I see it and it's neither good or bad. As for self-made dolphins, the mere fact that we have such a strongly enforced hierarchy, based on the amount of money, speaks a lot about the type of organization we are. Ina real organization, we could all become dolphins at once, if we want, or squirrels, or elephants.
I have nothing against wolf packs, as long as they keep evolving.

I've noticed (at least) two kinds of newcomers to steemit.
these guys
"ooooh....it's not FAIR...those meanies have more than I do...they should SHARE"
the other guys just keep churning out posts while racking up the rep and rewards.
The second type is what I mean by 'self made dolphins'.

It's a gam and a game. I think gam fits your contest answer too...
Like a wolfpack but of whales and whalers talking about whales:
Source Merriam-Webster:
gam
noun
1: a visit or friendly conversation at sea or ashore especially between whalers
2: a school of whales
