Mondays are great for rolling up UI features - this is an old saying in the CodeWonderLand, as any programmer knows.
And, apparently, the Steemit devs are aware of this proverb too, because they launched a new feature today, namely Cover Images. It's the band behind the account info, which now, as you can see from this screenshot below, can be customized. I set that image long ago, but it was only visible in the eSteem app. Now it's visible on steemit.com too.
By the way, I saw no announcement about this feature on any of the @steemitblog or @steemitdev accounts, but worry no more, I'm here to bring the good news :)
There is also a new form field in the Setting area, from where you can set up your cover image:
Please be aware that the font is white, so you need a more contrastive background than the one I have right now. Nevertheless, this is a good addition, not necessarily by itself, but by showing that the devs are at work.

Yeah i noticed that this morning ad thought my browser was totally screwed it. it had auto-magically brought the banner in from my website.
It does seem that Steemit's communication strategy hasn't been altered with the new marketing guy.
They are still just rolling stuff out and not communicating with the community they are serving.

how hard is it to say - hey look at this cool thing we are rolling out tomorrow. Here is how you play with it.
They way it operates at the moment, is this is a dev's playground and we get random features delivered, at random intervals with no explanation - like were are not even part of the thought process behind the development.
I do this crap for a living and if I treated my clients like this I would be out of work pretty damn fast.

Communication is the most important thing right after the DO thing. But if they have no people then it is devs battle with others too. I hope that is only for steemit benefit and will go to next improved version.
I really don't want to see promises that can't be made. And here... sincerely, i haven't looked at steem coin website, white paper or go to track changes till now. Huh. I like what i see here and for the moment is ok.
Some bugs that others saw few months ago, i haven't found yet, so they might be solved :-) (e.g. missing posts or when replying not showing from first time... must ctrl+v and reply 2-3 times...).
The only thing i see is the website is loading so hard at some points. On android is going bad in some moments. In 2-3 locations i see that, so is not my home connection. It might be spikes of users being all at once... or just server limits... but is ok in general.
Till the next big changes, we can enjoy what we do.
This change with cover... that's just a piece of cake thrown here... so it could give a nicer look. We take it and show our new face now.

This is good news for personalization.
Unfortunately, this is bad news for performance, especially on lower-bandwidth connections. That's because the way that Steemit proxies images through
steemitimages.comprevents any caching, for two reasons:steemit-production-imageproxy-thumbnail.s3.amazonaws.comwith a brand new URL / access key upon every request, making it appear to the browser as a new image each time it is requested.I wish the devs would address this issue before adding even more visual load to the pages.

I don't know them, but after a bit of trial and error I came up with 1640x240. Try and see if it fits for you. The height might be a little smaller than 240.
