There is some seriously good content being produced on Steemit.
The current system of Topics and Tags and lack of filters in one's feed means that much of this will pass you by.
I do not want to miss that great piece of work submitted tomorrow by someone who joined today.
I also want that creative person to get the rewards they deserve!
A high number of votes does not necessarily equate to great content.
Let us not get into that here!.
The photo competition is great and the quality is outstanding - I mean outstanding!
So, in an attempt to provide a sort of filter, why not have other categories of competition?
This will create a series of galleries of work through which one can easily browse, now and into the future as a repository of excellence.
Poetry, paintings, drawings, philosophy, jokes, magic, investment, conservation, language, etymology.
As the topic/tag system is not really functioning very well - topics on steemitchat do not appear on steemit, please suggest the topics you would like to see.
The organisation will require a person(s) to act as judge(s) in each category of competition; please also show your willingness to perform this crucial function.
The judging does not need to take up huge amounts of time so 14 twenty minute video submissions would be too onerous. Similarly, a competition for the best interpretation of how to wear a toga may be interesting but a bit too niche!
I need to say in recognition that @curie and @screenname do a great job with their support for the lesser recognised posts in general with The Curie Project (project-curie has its own tag now) and Daily Tribune respectively. For that we are thankful and we salute you.
Please, especially to the people with large followings, I need this resteemed for obvious reasons.
Do we need a central message service which goes to everyone into a special tag on your home page, or is it just me? I know ... my bum looks big in this!
Finally, thank you to all the amazing creators out there - you are truly amazing!

Great thoughts here. Other fun & interesting competitions would be an incentive to post regularly. I vote for time-lapse competitions! Though there is a chance I might be at a bit of an advantage for that one :)

This post has been ranked within the top 80 most undervalued posts in the second half of Dec 05. We estimate that this post is undervalued by $6.01 as compared to a scenario in which every voter had an equal say.
See the full rankings and details in The Daily Tribune: Dec 05 - Part II. You can also read about some of our methodology, data analysis and technical details in our initial post.

It is a good idea. I think @jamtaylor is the most knowledgeable in this area when it comes to Steemit. He could probably give you some tips on how to do it but there are no set rules. You could have guest judges or judge it yourself. Give it a try and tweak it as you go. You don't even need money as a prize. You could just make it a title such as "Video of the Week" or "Painting of the Week" - people value recognition too.

Spot on @thecryptofiend , I have messaged @jamtaylor and await his advice on any structural issues - just need a topic or tag or several in the subject list.

I'm not completely sure if you are looking for a top-down change from Steemit Inc to add new ways of browsing, or a bottom up effort by users to use the current platform to meet these goals by hosting more competitions. I'm going to assume the latter.
On the SPC, I really stumbled upon the whole thing. So in terms of advice on structural issues all I'd say is that there's no need to consider the framework of the SPC as a 'success story' because innovating would be the best. It seems what you're talking about will be a much bigger project with more organisation required.
Unfortunately you have the limitations of this platform in terms of the "galleries of work through which one can easily browse", so that would be a challenge and need some creative problem solving.
You've already started gathering support for your project, so you just need some dedicated people willing to make it happen, and I'd leave prizes out at first even though they're the best incentive to participate for this culture. Exposure is probably the second biggest incentive, and it's free to be given but can turn into profit for the one getting exposure.
One idea would be to create a new account, @competitions or something like that, and allow your team the private posting key so that they can host competitions there under their particular interest, with guidelines for consistentcy.
Again, all the mechanics just need some creative problem solving.
Best of luck on your projects!

Hi @jamtaylor , firstly, yes, very much the latter - no reinvention of wheels being accommodated here!
So, secondly, yes, it is a case of wanting to provide a different form of content contribution focus to the steemit community. The numbers tell us that people have found many reasons to come to try the platform and nearly as many reasons to leave.
I hope that this will cause some stickyness and people will want to stay because of good experience. I know that most people only care about votes and steempower. I care about those things too but none of it will matter unless the content and community aspects are healthy!
Your photography competition has some amazingly high quality work being presented. I hope to follow in that vein and foster a body of work which creates its own magnetism to the Steemit success story.
Thank you again for your input and for your supportiveness. If we can emulate your success through different competitions, we will be collaborating into the future so I look forward to that very much.
To infinity ...

Great idea! I would be up to participate with my writing, or even joining the project. Keep me updated @ebryans. I would love to see a philosophy competition and be part of it :)

Hi @writingamigo, I agree about the philosophy section - I have read some very well thought through arguments which have been a challenge to one's default position. No Private messaging other than steemichat is a hindrance but that will be resolved when up and running
