Maximum Virtual Bandwidth (MVP): 3.0916214784e+18
Total Vesting Shares (TVS): 376518114534.2094

MVP and TVS are 2 system required variables we willuse to get our account's bandwith

What means bandwidth in Steem? :

Let’s view a blockchain like an Internet Service Provider (ISP) co-op which owns all of the cables in the town and has a maximum amount of bandwidth that it can provide at any time. People living in the town can buy shares in the ISP and in exchange they are entitled to utilize a portion of the available bandwidth.

Why is it getting important?

In the last days many steemians got locked because of lack of bandwith

The limit rate has been very volatil and developers are already working on fixing this

Every time we post we spend bandwith, we need to keep it above a dynamic level to be able to post , if we spend too much we wont be able to post for a while

You wont be able to post , vote or even Power UP your account , until you get more Steem Power or your bandw rate decreases

The formula uses also 2 more Account parameters :

  • Account Vesting Shares (AVS)
  • Account Average Bandwith (AAB)
we need to keep our bandwith use below the limit we get assigned based upon our Vesting Power

which formula is this:

AAB/MVP < AVS/TVS

which is also :
AVS/TVS- AAB/MVP >0

You can calculate account's bandwith state , by replying this post and writing :account_name

Also check this post to sort out the issue : post

This calculator is still in beta , it will work only in the last post from me , so if this one gets older will not work!

Update: Steemd has just added a Bandwidth Remaining indicator at its main page

Hi @elautomatico,

Such a useful post, thanks for writing it.
We experiencing another bandwidth issue but it is not as severe as it were when you wrote your post. I've been asked to look into integrate a bandwidth alrert into @ginabot. (my notifcation bot)

Your article has already helped me to gain better understanding of the technical details.

I have one more question however:
Do you know how to calculate the regeneration rate? I would like to inform my users how fast will their bandwidth go back to safe percentage.

Thank you!

Hi @neander-squirrel

Well , not sure about what the Bndw recovering ratio is
But you could call several times to the bdw calculation last post :

and make tests
If need any help just let me know
