When people ask me what's this new thing you have been tweeting about, I usually start with, "It's a mixture between Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and a Blogging platform."
I have their attention but then a barrage of questions follow.
How is Steemit different?
When you produce content, you get paid for the value that you have created instead of the likes of Facebooks shareholders getting paid.
Do you know how much value the like of Facebook extract from your account? The service they provide certainly isn't free. You give away your digital footprint, which is more valuable than you can imagine, and it becomes their property.
Do you get paid in real cash?
Yes, you get paid in a crypto currency called STEEM. This can be exchanged for cash or left in the system as an investment and converted to cash at a later date.
What is STEEM, is that like Bitcoin?
STEEM is a digital currency like Bitcoin. Think of it like a share in the value of the Steemit Economy.
To understand STEEM think of it like a share in a company. If the value of the company goes up your share will be worth more. So if Steemit does well, the value you have earned will increase even more, but you can also covert it to cash right now if you like.
How will the value of STEEM go up?
The reason anything has value is because people want it and are willing to exchange something for it. At the moment Steemit has value because its "shares" are traded on exchanges where people are willing to pay for them and give you cash or other goods.
- I recently paid for a private verification of my account from @steemverify for 3 SBD.
- @silviabeneforti has also offered signature design in exchange for STEEM
This type of trading activity helps to increase the value of STEEM just like a regular economy. The value of the economy is growing.
Please note throughout this post I use the term "shares". STEEM are not shares in Steemit Inc, but I am referring to shares in the Steemit Ecoysystem, the STEEM digital token. I conceptualise this as shares in a company, but they are not shares in the traditional sense.
Where does new STEEM come from?
One of the great things about Steemit is you're not encouraged to put money in to get started. It's not a ponzy scheme. Each day there is a redistribution of the total value of the Steemit Economy which means when you post, comment or vote you can get a share of this redistribution. Don't forget if the value of the whole Steemit Economy is growing your also benefiting from that.
- Some more details can be found here, Where does STEEM come from?
Here is where the conversation usually takes a turn...
Whats STEEM, Steem Power and Steem dollars
To store your Steem you have a choice to make of how you want to store it, where to keep your money.
There are three different forms of STEEM. You can choose to:
- keep cash in your pocket (STEEM)
- use it to buy shares in a company (Steem Power)
- put it in a bank account to keep it safe and earn interest (Steem Dollars)
STEEM (Like Cash)
If you keep it in its raw form you have an investment in the Steemit Economy just like having cash, Euros or Dollars. If the value of the economy goes up the value of your shares goes up too. This form of STEEM is liquid.
But
As more STEEM is created each day the value you hold in STEEM is effectively redistributed. It operates in a very similar way to a stock split in a company where your shares become worth less as new ones are created and given to other people.
Steem Power (Like Shares in a Company)
When you hold your investment in the Steem Power you're committing long term to Steemit so you get some benefits:
- Your voting power is increased so when you vote your vote carries more weight
- You get some of the continuous share split, in this past this was more significant but not anymore.
There is a downside
- The "shares" in the company cannot be sold quickly, you have to power down/convert to STEEM which happens over a period of time. This form of STEEM is not liquid.
Steem Dollars (Like a Bank Account)
If you invest in Steem Dollars your investment is basically pegged to the dollar so your value should stay the same in Dollar terms. You get paid a little interest for keeping your money in the Steemit economy but you don't benefit from the stock split, you also don't benefit from increases in the value of the economy as your share is just pegged to the dollar.
This post is not intended as financial advice, if you're thinking of investing money in STEEM do your own research first.
Thank you for reading this. I write on Steemit about Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, Travel and lots of random topics.

Great to hear you supporting the STEEM ecosystem & thanks for the mention.
The value will come from transactions. I believe 2017 we'll see something come around that well help us push out more transactions with STEEM.

Good explanation!
This is not 100% correct; Every day new Steem is created, and that is distributed to the community. So in essence, Steem is devaluated through the new creation of Steem every day, but the idea is that the new Steem is balanced towards the increase in demand of Steem. However, the supply and demand is not controlled for Steem. This is more or less controlled for Steem Dollar by the witnesses, to keep the peg to the US Dollar. At least that is what I make of all the stuff I read.

The way I see it in effect what happens when new Steem is created is a devaluation of the value of all the other Steem in existence. Because you are giving the new Steem to others, (not necessarily existing Steem holders) there effectively is a redistributing the wealth, all other things being equal.
The mechanics are almost exactly the same as what happens when a central bank prints cash, or when a share split happens in a company.

I wonder how much of an effect on the value of Steem the Steem dollar has? I can't imagine it's that much since it's so far down the must on coinmarket cap compared to Steem.

I don't know as well. I just discovered that the witnesses kind-a control the SBD value. However, how that actually works, I don't know since every witness can set different values and how a common is derived is for me still unknown, as the proper understanding how the witnesses can indeed control SBD values. In the recent history we saw SBD jumping to 7US$ and coming down almost as quickly. I guess, the witnesses did not play role there. After that jump, SBD stayed slightly above 1US$; just yesterday or 2 days ago I read some witnesses reports on their adjustments to the Steem value that is used to calculate the rewards, that is apparently the only value they can control, so they do not control the Steem value in our internal market as they (obviously) do not control the Steem value on external markets. Quite a complex thing to understand without having all the implemented algorithms and formulas on the table.

The SBD part is not as straight forward to get your head around. My understanding of the goal for the witnesses is maintain a value of parity with the US dollar. There is a few ways they can do this. Setting the interest rate is one.
The Steem value on the other hand is controlled by the markets but also subject to any changes in the rate of new Steem creation.

Correct, the idea is to have SBD pegged to US$. How to do this? Indeed interest rates. In addition, witnesses can also set a discount to Steem value used for calculating the rewards. It becomes even more complex, because this Steem value is not the internal market or external market Steem value, or at least not the same parameters. https://steemit.com/sbd/@timcliff/attention-sbd-converters-please-read-important-information-about-sbd-steem-conversions

I try to open up with the aspect that might most appeal to them (which is not provided by other platforms).
On Reddit I often open up with: It's a social network which is censorship resistant, because it runs on a decentralized blockchain. (Go on to explain how that can help resist censorship, which is an issue Redditors care about).
In other cases I go with: It's a social network which is owned by the users, not just one company. Every user has a stake, can vote to pay other users for projects/services etc. This is ideologically appealing for some (myself included).
For content creators and people who want to support them: It's a place where we can support the people who create the content we care about, without friction, without middlemen or large fees.
My most successful pitch was probably: "Holy shit I just made $1,000 for making a comment!!!"

You're right though it's important to appeal to what people can relate to. Do you think people lose respect, or become sceptical when the money aspect is mentioned?

Definitely. Mention money and most people instantly think 'scam'. Worst thing to do is to create a negative association right off the bat.

I feel it also creates false expectations. There are not many posts earning $1000 these days and there will be even less in the future. If you join Stemmit today it can take a lot of work before you start earning big paydays.

That's true. At the time it wasn't such a rarity, a large number of the people I introduced made at least hundreds, and in one case many thousands of $ on posts. But there was a relatively small number of users with a large pie due to the price going through the roof.
There will be large payouts again I think, but generally spread out over a large userbase.

An alternative income of even a few dollars would be significant for some.

I dunno, as an artist, the money aspect was the thing that got me interested. Do you really think it's such a bad thing to focus on?
I don't see "fair compensation for content creators" as a bad sales pitch. It's addressing one of the biggest problems in the art world today.
