Advice for New Steemit Users

If you're new to Steemit, you might have a few questions. You're probably feeling a tad confused. Don't worry, you're not alone in that!

I'm a newbie, too; I opened a Steemit account at the end of 2017 but didn't start using it until about a week ago or so. I haven't made a significant amount of money yet but I do see the earning potential.

Personally, I didn't join Steemit to make money; I'm on it because I can't stand Facebook. Why should Zuckerberg make all the money and then sell all of your personal information to third parties who just want to exploit you?

If you're going to be on social media anyways, liking, and voting or whatever, or blogging and vlogging, uploading videos, why not get rewarded for it? Time is money!

Steemit allows you to do all that but it actually pays you for it! You're trading your time for money.

Some Steemians have learned how to optimize their efforts by cultivating their skills to the max and, after some time, they see growth and earn huge money!

Others haven't quite learned the ropes yet and they drop out in frustration. They vote-bomb, not understanding the mechanics or the rules of the game; they produce content but they don't see the money rolling in immediately, and they think it's a big scam, so they give up.

It's too bad because I think they're leaving money on the table without giving Steemit a fair shake. If only they got themselves all set up properly by taking the time to get educated on all things Steemit. There's a ton of stuff out there to help newbies and tons of veteran Steemians who are ready, willing, and able to lend them a helping hand.

That's been my experience so far. I've met some really amazing people on Steemit, mostly Steemians who are in one or another Discord channel that they invited me to or that I found on my own.

😁

!!! I want to thank my friend @rentmoney for teaching me how to add an emoji to my post. He wrote a helpful article on how you can do that, too, and more. Check it out: Steemit Tricks Every Steemian Should Know- Let's Get You Noticed !!!

I have three points of advice for you:

1 - Before you give up on Steemit, ask yourself if you've educated yourself enough or reached out to others for help when you're stuck.

2 - Network, network, network! Make friends and be genuine.

3 - Focus! Master one thing before you move onto another. Take your time.

Update # 1: Two more points...

4 - DO NOT VOTE ON YOUR OWN POSTS! I just learned that, thanks to my friend @wolfhart. I wasn't comfortable doing that in the first place but I blindly followed someone else's advice. Voting for yourself really is kind of a tacky thing to do!

5 - Don't follow advice blindly (including mine). Do your own research and verify things for yourself.

Update # 2: One more point...

6 - Learn how to properly source your images! Thanks to my friend @dynamicgreentk from @dynamicstemians for pointing me to an article written by @lynncoyle1 who offers some very important advice in this regard. You'll not only want to read her article but also the equally important thread of comments left for her; they are extremely revelatory! Here is the link to her article: WHAT IS PROPER IMAGE SOURCING? A Cautionary Tale! After reading it I had to come back and edit this post. I hope I followed her instructions correctly!

I will take your advice for future posts. Thanks for your kind help as always!

I took your advice and learned a number of new skills in the last few days. So I used those skills and edited this post. I hope it's better. I had a great time researching and improving. Thanks again @dynamicgreentk!

This is a great post . For a newbie you get it and put it words that all can understand . You made it personnel . That little upvote you gave yourself that will turn to dust , I will help you out . :)
Again nicely done . use the tag "greetersguild" lol

You prove my point about others wanting to help newbies out. Thanks wolfhart...I followed your advice and added the greetersguild tag. Now, I will have to ask you about upvoting my own post. I thought it was a great idea! Now I"m not so sure...besides, it does feel a bit weird to vote for myself, lol!

Very good advice, proving that it really doesn't take that much time to start figuring things out if you care to observe what's going on and do some reading. Welcome to Steemit.

Looks like you're heading in the right direction. :)

Thank you @glenalbrethsen ! Learning Steemit is almost as mentally challenging for me as one of my second-year mandatory philosophy courses on critical thinking and argumentation!

There is definitely a steep learning curve, which isn't aided at all by the fact that you have several different ways of doing things around here when essentially there's no rules. Whatever the code allows, the code allows. So, you might need courses in behavioral science and game theory before it's all said and done. :)

Hahaha! CBT or RET might very well come in handy here! GT? Way above my head....

Good Luck with your account and have fun !

Thank you @rentmoney....and I'm very grateful for the link to your post. I"m going there now!

I have fixed the link.

Sorry about that ..

Your link works perfectly now. Looking forward to reading the article! Thanks!

I read your article @rentmoney. Really great work. I'm saving it and re-reading before writing another post. Plus, as soon as I get my voting power back up again I'm going to upvote it. I really think it's important stuff, especially for newbies. I'm thinking about writing a followup to this post here highliting all the valuable tools and resources I've come across so far and want to include a link to you. I hope that's okay. Also, I'll be editing this post as well as some of my others using the tricks you taught me. ;-)

Thank you for the kind words. The post has been getting some positive responses, which is great.

I look forward to reading your followup post. I will gladly accept having my article linked in it. Thank you for even considering doing so. You just gained a follower and I am now of to check out some of your other articles :)

Best of luck with your account !

That's awesome, thanks! I'm glad I met you! Now that my voting power is back above 80, I'm off to your article again to up-vote as promised, plus I want to follow you because I think what you have there is valuable.
