Hi friends, how are you? I am here to discuss an important topic with you. Does anyone know about this man, @romanticjay? He joined Steemit in 2018, and his last active status was 2 years ago. However, when we looked at his wallet history and transfer activities, we saw that he has transferred 6,014.055 Steem to exchanges. He received this Steem from many different accounts in different amounts, with the minimum amount being 0.something Steem and the maximum amount being 800 Steem.

And those who transferred Steem to his wallet are also old and inactive users. So, my question is, why did they transfer Steem to him? Do he have access to the keys of all these accounts? Or he stolen their keys?

When I read his posts, I saw a comment from a user below, in which the user said that he stole Steem from his wallet. How is it possible for someone to access our private keys? @the-gorilla.

How he Catched my attention?

Today, my friend and fellow Steemian @zaibb texted me on WhatsApp and told me that someone tried to steal his Steem and started the power down of his account. He also mentioned that 0.559 SBD was transferred to his account. But Zaibb said that he didn't start the power down or transfer any Steem or SBD to anyone. He assured me that he hasn't shared his password with anyone and hasn't clicked on any phishing links.

Then, I checked and saw that it wasn't only Zaibb who had transferred Steem and SBD, but many other users had transferred to him as well. I don't know whether these users transferred voluntarily or if the Steem was stolen, just like it was from my friend's account.

From this, we can infer that the person might have access to Zaibb's private keys, as they started his power down, and then they would transfer the powered-down Steem to their own account. But it's not supposed to be possible for anyone to have access to private keys. So, how did they do this?

So, my purpose in writing this post is to address some questions that come to mind:

  • First, does he have access to the private keys?
  • How did he start the power down of @zaibb’s account and how did he transfer SBD to him?
  • Why did many users transfer Steem to him?
  • Do we need to take action on this?
  • Or will the Steemit team look into this matter?

I hope you will catch him, I am looking forward for your attention to this post.

This is not a new thing on Steem, I myself was a victim when I was 27 months dormant. So it is important to always check the wallet and frequently change key.

Yeah, but how can he access with keys of all these accounts? Because there is not only one who transferred, there are many, approximately more then 100 I guess.

Yes. I questioned that before, as well, but there was never be an answer so I stopped asking. Thanks for asking it again, I hope when there are answers, you will tell me.

ohhh, let's see..

Congratulations!

@the-gorilla, Here is the list of users who transferred almost 3,400 Steem and 130 SBD in last three months.

You'd be surprised how many accounts you can find if you search free github repos. People tried to create bots/scripts over the years and left the keys in the scripts. I remember reading about this a few years ago, someone actually made a bot to check for the keys in repos, can't remember who exactly.

Yeah, maybe that's one of the reasons, but he could have another way to hack a Steem wallet. But anyway, always be aware.

Unfortunately, they've been linked to many cases of hacked Steem wallets. I don't know who they are or how they've achieved this, nor a solution.

Yeah it's really difficult to understand, who they are;

I have faced this scam.
On contacting @the-gorilla, I found this is something anonymous.
Don't make the mistake of saving your Private Active Key to Google or Wallet.
Change your keys if you have been a victim as soon as possible.
