Los Angeles Union Station (LAUS) is the main & biggest railway station in Los Angeles, California, and the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western US. It opened in May 1939 and it was added to the National Register of Historic places in 1980.
This station is a major transportation hub for Southern California. It’s serving almost 110,000 passengers a day. The station is the hub of the Metro link commuter trains, and several Metro Rail sub way and light rail lines buses and coach serve it as well. The station was a major hub for troop movement during World War 2.
There are three metro rail lines (@Metro Red Line/Metro Purple Line/Metro Gold Line) serve the stations portal with about 300 metro trains departing every weekday.
One Metro Bus way (Metro Silver Line) bus rapid transit line makes a stop outside union station. The metro silver line stops near the southwest corner of the station at the entrance to the El Monte bus way at Alameda Street.
Union Station is located in the northeastern corner of Downtown Los Angeles. It is across Alameda Street from L.A.’s historic Olvera Street and El Pueblo de Los Angeles State historic park. . (@Location: Amtrak/Metro link, 800 North Alameda, 801 vignes street, Los Angeles, California, US.)
It was partially designed by John Parkinson and Donald B. Parkinson and it was designed in styles that combines art deco, mission revival, and streamline modern style. The tiled floor was designed to reproduce the pattern of a Navajo blanket. Enclosed garden patios are on either side of the waiting room, and the ceiling of waiting room has the appearance of wood, but is actually made of steel. The lower parts of the interior walls are covered in travertine marble, and the upper parts have an early form of acoustical tile.
The Gateway transit center includes the station itself and the Patsaouras transit plaza. Amtrak and metro link share 12 of union station’s 14 outdoor tracks, with 90 weekday trains departing (91 on Wednesday, 92 on Friday.)
The station has a restaurant which is attached to the main building to the south and it’s designed by the famed Southwestern architect Mary Colter. This restaurant became very popular for soldier shipping during the world war 2 & those time this restaurant was known a Harvey house.
Today it's the most beautiful restaurant & stepping through the glass doors known as the Fred Harvey room.
It is the largest operational train station in the western United States.Union station is now more then bustling transportation hub in the heart of the city. It's a true culture of connecting wonderful element of one of the world cities.
