After learning about the recent changes to the steemit ecosystem, I had some initial reactions. My first score was a 6 and while I wasn’t really too upset about it, I wasn’t too thrilled about it either. That being said, here are some thoughts and findings from this new added feature and what I think it can bring to the experience.
This can be likened to the caste system.
The new reputation system introduces status into the steemit community. With that system now in place, you should have some type of idea what to expect now when clicking on a post. In addition, you can also see that when you move up the system, the numbers get smaller and smaller with the members at the top being the most elite and consistently putting out the most award winning material.
Users with higher reputations consistently earned more.
As I started clicking about on the various user accounts I did notice several items in common relative to each of those accounts. The most notable of which is that users that had a higher score displayed posts that had consistently earned more and they also had higher wallet and SP amounts. Since these go hand in hand, it should be safe to assume that there is a relationship between generating high earning posts and having high wallet numbers.
What we can expect now that this system has been instituted.
With the reputation system now in place, each user now has a clearer picture of how much they can expect to earn. For example, if your reputation score is a six, then your posts should make a few cents to the tens of dollars range and if you’re super lucky, possibly a few hundred bucks. If you are an 8, you likely have been frequently featured on the trending page and your posts are consistently generating 1K-2K. If so, consider yourself one of the elite. Therefore, if the wallets of people in said reputation level are inside a certain range, then you can get an idea of how much you can be expect to be making from steemit on a regular basis.
How you can use the system for more effective curating.
Lastly, since one of the ways to reach success in steemit is to notice patterns, you can use the new reputation feature to be smart about what to upvote. If you’re clicking on very low reputation posts, you are probably not going to be very accurate in terms of voting posts that are likely to go up in value. On the other hand, if you are clicking on posts of people with higher reputations and who have been consistently putting out highly rewarded content, you are likely to generate more success from your curating efforts. You may also be in the mood for finding a diamond in the rough. In that case, look for posts that are from mediocre reputation levels and hopefully it will surprise you.
Thank you!! Comments…
It would be interesting to get some sort of explanation from the developers as to how the reputation system really works. Like you I am in 6 and judging by the amounts of users you describe, that means we're in the top 10%, so that's good.
I'd like to try and get higher, but knowing how it works would be a great help. Probably like you posted, having high earning posts is a point, but I can assume that getting flagged would count against you, and perhaps the average quality of your upvotes might count as well,...

Dan says that they have an algorhythm for it, but I don't know exactly how that works.
