So I Finally Used The Mute Button

in steemit •  7 years ago

I am not sure why, but my "home" tab was getting trashier and trashier. Not quite porn, but as close as people can push it. I am never going to click on those posts, I do not need to have them clutter up my pages. I decided it was time to make my steemit experience more to my liking.

I am not advocating for the closure of those accounts, I did not go make nasty comments or flag anyone. I believe in free speech. If that is really all you have to say to the world, I feel sorry for you but go nuts, you are free to wallow in all the perversion and filth you can find. I am actually sort of glad you are here, it does show that there is a high degree of personal liberty here on steemit.

Now then, with liberty goes responsibility. You have a right to own a gun in this country, but if you use that gun to kill someone or rob someone, you will be held responsible for your actions. If you are inclined to post garbage and try to make money off people who are selling their bodies in some form, you are going to have to accept the responsibility for those actions. You will get muted by people like me. You will never get an upvote, a resteem, or a follow out of me. I am not even going to give you the view count, you will just disappear from my steemit world.

I had been avoiding the mute button, it felt like "censorship" and I am a big girl, the titles and such do not scare me. However, I am trying to find QUALITY content, and you soft porn pushers were in my way. You are gone now. Buh-bye!! I hope you get ignored so hard by so many people that you find something more useful to do with your precious life and time on earth.

I find the "mute" button to be one of the most powerful features of this platform, especially combined with the fact that a user cannot directly see whether they are muted or not.

Everyone has their bad moments, so what I do is dedicate a few moments to explore a few posts from a "to-be-muted" candidate and if they turn out to be mostly clickbaits and/or nonsensical attention seekers, well, I need to prune my feed otherwise it will become unreadable junk.

I did not realize I could just mute them, thought I could only mute people I follow. These are people with screennames like "nastynooky" and "dirtygirldancers" and they post nothing but soft porn, and I am just not into it. Being able to just eliminate them from all my feeds was a trick I did not realize was available until today. It is nice. It is not that I am a snowflake who needs a safe space, I am just not into it, don't want it in my face.

If they're showing up on your "Home" page -- how are they getting there? Are you not following them? My understanding is "Home" only shows posts and resteems from those you follow. Perhaps it was a resteem that one of those you're following performed?

My other thought along those lines is, if they're showing up in "Home" and if only those you follow show up, then it might be that you followed them "early on"? I'm following over 700 people now, and don't remember everyone I followed. I'm reluctant to mute or unfollow anyone, although I have unfollowed several who were pushing scams, affiliate links, etc.

And, people keep muting and unfollowing me, without letting me know why. Not that I expect them to, just, that's how it goes. :)

I knew from your username I'd like you, clicked on your profile and see your only post supports my new (as of two years ago) world view. :) So, you've got a new follower.

Just wanted to let you know, though, it is fairly easy to see who has muted you. The below site shows you a chart of people who followed, unfollowed, and muted you for each day. Below that is the list of people and the action they took, newest first. So I can load that page and then search for "muted" to find those who have muted me. Might be nicer if it was sortable, i.e., could show all "muters" in a single list, but at least this gives you the info.

Good find. As for the username stuff, I wrote my first article since, hope it will prove informative enough.

Ah, sorry just saw this, and it's 7 days old. Gave it a 10% upvote anyway, but it didn't register. Great read though, thanks!
