The best size for the Steemit cover image without cropping the original photo so much. I had to go through quite a lot of images to find the sweet spot.

This is my current cover image as of August 15, 2017

My current cover image size is 2561x223, you can go by inches which is 10.67 x 0.93 or 11:1 ratio. You can adjust your images via editing software. You can play around with the size with this base ranges.

In terms of speed and quality this is the best size for the cover image. If you go any higher it will load very slow, risking low quality user experience. Any lower and the image will be pixelated.

If you don't want your image looking stretched like Mr. Fantastic then you can choose a part of your image and crop it. Go by the 11:1 ratio, mind you I just rounded off this number from 10.65:0.95, don't want it too complicated. These numbers i'm giving you are your base numbers to use. Everyone have different size monitors, images, preference, etc...

This is my cropped version of the above image. I just wanted to show the Opera House. If I wanted to use the bridge then I would select it using the 11:1 ratio.

And, that's it. Hope this helps. Bye guys.

I put a lot of effort in the contents that I provide to Steemit. Editing photos can be from 1-2 hours long. When I'm fussy, it can go up to 4 hours or more. The editing life can be unhealthy, sitting down for long hours can have detrimental effects to your health. Please upvote me so I can have the funds to build a treadmill in front of my computer. This way I can exercise while editing.

Just kidding 😁

I love it, I still do it regardless. Thanks for looking and keep Steeming!

Thanks for the tip! I would suggest in choosing a photo that is generally dark or at least have a dark center. The information of name, etc. is in white and doesn't show up well. I find it difficult to read on the photo you have selected. Of course if you want to be incognito that's another story. ^-_-^

Hey, I was actually going to change it for that reason, but decided to leave it for now so people can see what the actual image look like on the cover image. I'll change it after a month, when more people have done lots more tutorials on this.

But yeah great tip @johncongdon, which I should also have mentioned in the post. Thanks for pointing that out.

Good point, @johncongdon! Thanks for the reminder before I waste some time on a picture that is a poor choice.

Thanks! Your post saved me a lot of time! Great! Enjoy your life! Rolf

Cheers!

@foovler, thanks for posting this article. I have upvoted it! You provided the exact information I was looking for, and have saved me a lot of time with your Pro tip. I will be following you for future time-savers!

Hey, thanks for the upvote. It's good I provided good information. Just in case you didn't know, posts don't earn reward after 7 days. So don't waste your votes on old posts. Plus, your voting power just went down doing so. Thanks for the follow, have a great day.

@foovler, thanks for the reply and the additional information. I knew that a post would not receive a reward for my upvote after 7 days, but I wasn't sure if my late upvote would not still help the post have visibility or add to the author's reputation. Does a late upvote still impact these things? Thanks again for your help.

no clue... no worries...

Thanks for the tip. I was looking for something like this :) It helps a lot with making the center a dark colour.

Hey yeh no worries.. 😊

thank you for the tip!! :)

no worries..

Thank you! 11:1 ratio, got it. Really wish Steemit had this info listed publicly.

That's just a guide, but around that range will fit.. thanks for looking.

Thanks for your advice! My first attempt for a cover image looked quite bad ;)

A pleasure

Hey there, i just found this post. So 2561x223 is your current cover image dimension?

Yeh about there. Play around those ranges and see what is best for you.

Nice post @foovler.. I have upvote you ... if you like please upvote back @rizkiandrian ...thanks

Hi, nice tip. Thanks! Played with my cover image until I liked the result 😎😀

Glad this post is still helping people create their Steemit cover image.

Thank you so much for these super exact dimensions, you saved me hours of headaches <3
I went for the 10.65 : 0.95 ratio, and GIMP accepted them to the fraction, yay!

As for the darker middle: create one layer, spanning half the image size. Fade it from pitch black (towards the middle) to fully transparent (towards the side edge). Then simply duplicate that layer and flip it horizontally.
Lastly merge these layers together, and set the resulting layer opacity to somewhere around 65-100 % opacity, according to taste.
Turned progressive rendering off, and went for 98% quality, which comes to 363 kb file size @ 1920x172 .
Considering the file size, I am really happy with the result.

Well done and nice tips.

Thank You for the info, this was a great help to me as I just started using Steemit. I really appreciate it!
