I see a lot of talk about whales powering down. People are worried about them doing it. Well here is my take. They don't have to power down to reap huge rewards. Here is all they need to do:
- Have or create some alt accounts
- Create threads or comment with those alt accounts
- Vote with their main account on those posts or comments
- Sell the resulting SBD
- Power down the alt accounts (optional)
Lets take a hypothetical example. Whale Moby has enough steem power that he can vote 40 times a day with an average of $1000 given per vote. He creates 10 alt accounts. Each of those alts makes 1 thread a day and 3 comments. Moby votes on each of those posts and comments after 30 minutes. Yes sooner would give more to the alts but lets keep the math simple. Each of those posts and comments receives $750 at payout divided between SBD and Steem power so $375 SBD and $375 worth of SP. That is $1500 SBD and $1500 worth of SP per account multiply by 10 accounts and you have $15k SDB and $15k worth of SP per day or $5,475,000 a year of both SBD and SP. Now after the first day he can also has an additional 400 votes from the alt accounts to spread around. If he doesn't' power down the alts steem power will continue to grow giving them higher and higher rewards every day. Also the main account will get more and more power as well increasing it as well.
So if your watching for whales to power down don't' waste your time. Instead keep an eye on who they are voting for and how often. This will give a better idea of if they are pulling money out using alts while trying to keep the price from being affected.
Maybe someone with the right knowledge will write a utility to do this.
It sounds like too much work - most whales like to make money using automatic curaton bots, without having to do any writing.

They could easily right bots to do this for them. Even by hand thought it would only take like 15 minutes a day to make that much.

I think some have made bots that automatically write simple comments - but other bots have detected them and downvote them.
The issue of multiple accounts is that you need to do writing - whereas with one whale account all you need to do is curating by bot from an author list.

The problem with curating is they need to power down to get the rewards. Posts and comments give then at least 75% payout that day.

They don't need alt accounts, they can up vote their own posts / replies and get SD

Yes but people watch the main accounts. Also the use of alt accounts gives them potential for even bigger payouts every day.

WOW Mind blown. So that's why they don't up-vote my gold?
