The two highest money making posts here are those that reach the Hot posts or the Trending posts pages, of course the trending post is the best one, a trending post gets above $500.00 at this moment. Now how do you get to post at least a hot post? The answer is WHALES, you attract whale votes and your post will certainly be a hot one and will probably get to be a trending post. The more whales vote for you the higher the reward you receive, this is obvious.
Now getting those whale votes is very difficult, because I have not seen any apparent pattern for them, whales seem to upvote their friends or acquaintances and every so often they will randomly vote for some post, I know this is true because I have gotten a few whale votes on articles with not much merit, while others I have written which had way better content got no big votes.
So there is no sure way of getting these votes except befriending a whale, or getting lucky. Now I have been looking at these trending post and I have seen something, even though I raised this subject with someone who is much more involved than I and he said this idea is not valid, but anyway here it is. A lot of trending articles use high value upvote bots, I guess everyone knows about these, you bid a certain amount of SBD and these bots upvote your post with a vote value according to what you bid.
Now, I have tested these bots and the return is not that good, you either lose a little, break even or in the luckiest cases you do make a profit. But if you spend a reasonable amount of SBD, say SBD75.00 or thereabouts this should be enough to get you on the hot page, here luck has to play a part also, on this page your post definitely gets a lot of visibility and hopefully a good amount of people will upvote you because of the curation reward. Now depending on the quality of your content this could even send it to trending status.
Have I personally tested this? No. But I have been reading a lot of trending posts and I have found that a lot of the authors of these posts use upvote bots, now knowing you don't make much money or even lose when you use these bots, the only reason these knowledgeable guys have for using them is because they know this will help their post gain visibility.
I am not recommending that you use this method, but you can verify what I am saying by going to the trending page and you will see that many of the posts there have been upvoted by bots from these upvoting services, I believe you will notice that what I am saying is true.
Remember it isn't always the greatest content that gets the best rewards, for this you have to have good connections and also good tactics, such as the upvote bots, you would have to study the timing for these votes as I guess you would have to receive them not much after posting your article.
Hey, good piece. Any thoughts on why bots are allowed to be so prevalent?
I see how they can be beneficial to account holders but I see the negatives to it as well. Just sparked some curiosity in me....

Nearly everything on the internet eventually is taken over by bots, on Steemit that happened very fast.

I'm slowly working on a bot that identifies bots that have upvoted an article. It'll help things become a little more transparent.

The problem with these upvote bots is the simple fact they have the ability to artificially inflate junk content, including pure spam. The entire Steem platform seems to have a problem with spammers as a whole, and a quick look at the most recent posts just goes to further prove how invasive the problem has become.
And the claims you made are true, as many Steemit users are in fact using bots to give their posts a boost. Just look at the Steembot tracker, that platform is essentially a market place for Steem bots.
If creators here can't be recognized and rewarded fairly for their work over the long term as the result of bots, its likely the use of such measures could end up being Steemit's downfall.

Yes, you are right about upvote bots inflating junk content, but in the context I wrote about, this is not so, I don't think anyone would invest a lot of money on upvotes just to give a junk post more viewers. No, I think a logical person would first weigh if his post merits votes from real people who read it and then use the upvote bot to give it a greater audience, otherwise if his content is junk he will lose money.

I agree, just getting a few upvotes doesn't mean the community will like the content, and won't flag it if they think people are doing shady things, like spamming. I could see the voting bots as a means to getting more visibility for a piece of content you really want people to see, and that's actually worth promoting.

Someone who owns a huge amount of Steem.

Ahhh ha okay I see... is it an acronym for something or is it just a metaphor because Whales are bloody huge?!

As far as I know it is because they are huge. That is why on Steemit you have Whales, Dolphins, Minnows etc., it all depends on the size of how much Steem Power you hold.

Do you think our trending page shows the best side of Steemit?
This page has long ceased to be a place where you can find the most worthy and quality posts. There's only something that got votes and high payouts thanks to bots and rich friends. It could just be a quote from a famous person and a picture from an open source, and if it were not on a trend page, you would not pay any attention to this post in your feed, that's how it is low-grade content.
Whales? Whales don't vote for free (except @curie), most of them trade their votes, give pover to delegation to voting bots or have their own voting bots. Only minnows and some orcas are active and objective curators here.

No it doesn't show the best side, but it shows who makes the most money. Whales do vote randomly, I have gotten a few votes that way.
And no, most of the trending content is not bad, if you look most trending posts do have a lot of thought in them, you might not like them but probably somebody else does.

@erikaflynn you're absolutely right that trending does not reflect the best material. Top rated and most viewed categories would be helpful. The upvote value listing system cripples a lot of articles. Trending seems to only benefit the early adopters, rich, or lucky.

Hello, if you bet accurate and check how much bot is loaded here: http://www.steembottracker.com you may get nice profit and upvote your post at good rate

This is a really interesting topic.I personally have never been the biggest fan of bots which means I haven't used any bots yet and I don't plan to for now...maybe that's gonna change, who knows. What you said is true that you need good connections in order to get upvotes from people that have higher power than you but its also a fact that having really unique and great content might boost you up high and eventually your content might be seen from the whales themselves. This happens when your content is extremely useful or unique.
Thank you for contributing to the Steemit Community.Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to your next posts.

You've made some good observations, @gduran! There are a lot of factors involved. You've also got to consider that there is tech savvy involved, and people who understand how to game the system are at an advantage. Steemit is a game of sorts at it's roots. This part is not readily apparent to new users because it is not promoted as such. It is also a legitimate platform for blogging, but people who are highly tech savvy are able to profit more from it than the average user. There are a lot of factors that come into play, and you have identified only a few. Good job with this article, though.
I've upvoted and resteemed this article as one of my daily post promotions for the @mitneb Curation Trail Project. It will be featured in the @mitneb Curation Trail Project Daily Report for 29 JAN 2018.
Cheers!
