Đối với người dùng Bitcoin ngày nay, thuật ngữ Hardfork Bitcoin không xa lạ gì khi được nghe. Hardfork của Bitcoin chính xác là gì? Nói một cách đơn giản, Hardfork được định nghĩa là một thay đổi khá cực đoan được thực hiện trên lõi bitcoin. Nói chung, Hardfork được thực hiện khi một nút bên trong mạng Bitcoin không thể xác nhận hợp lệ khối mới vì có sự khác biệt giữa các nút chưa cập nhật thiết bị lõi Bitcoin với các nút đã chấp nhận thỏa thuận giao thức mới.
Tình trạng này xảy ra khi có một cái nhìn khác nhau giữa Bitcoin Unlimited với Bitcoin Core. Các nút Bitcoin Core vẫn nhận ra các khối hợp lệ nhỏ hơn 1 mb, trong khi các nút Bitcoin Unlimited nhận ra các khối hợp lệ lớn hơn 1 mb. Thông thường các điều kiện của quan điểm khác nhau về sự đồng thuận khối mới được coi là hợp lệ nếu nó xảy ra nhiều lần sau đó nó không làm cho bất kỳ sự khác biệt như kẻ tấn công độc hại đến sự đồng thuận bitcoin. Điều này có nghĩa rằng nếu trong một chuỗi (mạng blockchain) có hai sự đồng thuận khác nhau, thì các quan điểm khác nhau sẽ trở thành vĩnh viễn.
