Cemal Süreya (1931-1990) was a prominent Turkish poet, writer, and translator, known for his contributions to modern Turkish literature. Born in Erzincan, Turkey, Süreya’s real name was Cemalettin Seber. His family was forced to migrate to Istanbul due to the political upheaval during the Dersim Rebellion, an experience that deeply influenced his later works.

Süreya studied at the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University, where he began to immerse himself in literature. His career as a civil servant took him to various cities, but his passion for poetry and writing never waned. He became one of the leading figures of the Second New (İkinci Yeni) movement in Turkish poetry, which was characterized by its abstract language and innovative styles.

Cemal Süreya’s poetry often explored themes of love, existentialism, and social issues, marked by a unique blend of lyricism and modernist elements. Some of his notable works include “Üvercinka,” “Göçebe,” and “Beni Öp Sonra Doğur Beni.” In addition to his poetry, he translated numerous works from French into Turkish, enriching the Turkish literary landscape with the works of international authors.

Süreya’s personal life was as colorful as his poetry; he married four times and had a son. His wit and playful use of language made him a beloved figure in Turkish literature. Despite his untimely death at the age of 59, Cemal Süreya remains a monumental influence on contemporary Turkish poetry and literature.
