How can a Minnow pull his tiny weight?

in steemit •  8 years ago

I feel like Frodo in the Lord of the Rings when he says "I will take it... though I do not know the way."

Last night in chat, I happened to butt in on a conversation that @ned was having. I tried to be polite (hopefully I succeeded) and made this analogy. I told him that I felt like Frodo in one of my favorite scenes from Lord of the Rings. It's the scene where the powerful leaders are all arguing about how to transport the ring to Mordor in order to destroy it. Amongst all the chaos, the smallest, and least likely member of the council stands up and begins to meekly say "I will take it... though I don't know the way". I used this analogy as a way to describe how I feel as a Minnow on this site. I love the philosophy behind this site. I love the community. I love that it has given opportunities to people who would have never had them otherwise. Because I truly believe in this site so much, I want to help... I just don't know how.

I made this analogy, and asked my question: "How can a little person like me help?" @ned was very cool and said some kind words. But only after a little reflection did I realize that I had basically asked... "So can you tell me really quick how to build a spacecraft?" My question was way too big for a quick chat session (especially one that I accidentally crashed). That is why I am writing this post. I really want an answer to the question, but I don't know how to get it.

The more I think of that scene, the more I believe it is a perfect analogy for how I feel on steemit. In the scene, there is a council meeting of VIPs representing the different people of Middle Earth. These VIPs are the Whales. Then there is one seemingly insignificant, little Hobbit. He represents me and all the other Minnows. He sits back and watches the Whales. He knows that what they are doing is important. He knows the goal is altruistic and must be accomplished. He desperately wants to help accomplish this goal. Finally he gets the courage to speak and offers his help... and then quickly realizes he really can't help. At least not on his own. He needs the help of the Whales in order to accomplish anything ...at least at first. Of course in perfect Minnow fashion, three other Minnows join him.

There eventually comes a point when Frodo needs to do this alone (Except for Sam. Because if Frodo is going alone, of course Sam is going with him). But before he gets to this point, he needs a lot of help from the Whales.

This is where I am at in my steemit journey. I desperately want to help the site grow, but I don't know how. I have read posts and white papers. I have chatted and researched. I have watched craigrant videos. It seems every time I think I have it figured out, I really end up following Gollum to my doom.

For example, I originally thought the best way to help the community was to put everything you could into Steem Power. I thought that it somehow magically helped the community grow. When I was lucky enough to earn a couple of hundred dollars, I desperately wanted to turn it into magic Steem Power. You can't do this directly from Steem Dollars so I clicked "convert to stem". Easy enough, I'll just convert it and then turn it to Steem Power. Wait, not so fast. Something pops up about taking a week and and something about a "price feed average". But I wanted to help the community immediately. It might die without my 100 magic Steem Power! So I went to the internal market, traded Steem dollars for Steem and then converted it to Steem Power. I had done my part to help! I waited for my gold star.

But not so fast, I have now heard that perhaps it is better for the community if you go trough the week long conversion process. Is this true? I don't know? Could I have helped the community more?

I forgot to mention my goal of converting to Steem Power. I dreamed of becoming someone whose votes actually mattered (I'm not talking Whale or even Dolphin sized effects). I dreamed of my vote being worth... a penny. I thought that would make a difference. I would see a good post and bless it with my vote. The counter would change from a 0 to an .01 and that contributor would have a concrete, tangible symbol that someone out there valued their content. I was going to make it hail like never before!

I figured how much Steem Power could it take? Apparently it's more than I have because my vote still doesn't have the desired effect. So how much Steem Power does it take to make your vote worth .01?

Then I figured, well maybe I can help by providing content. But if no one sees it, have I really helped at all? Have I actually hurt the site by flooding it? I don't know?

I can easily find many "Just let go of the money part and enjoy expressing yourself" posts. It is just as easy to find "Here's how to increase your chances of making money" posts. I just can't seem to find the one I'm looking for. I need a "Steps to take in order to best help the community" post.

In life I am a huge "pull your weight" guy. I can usually figure out how to do that. Even if I'm bad at something, there is always some "grunt work" that can be done.It is really bothering me that I don't know how to "pull my weight" here. Is there "grunt work" a little guy can do?

Any suggestions?

If anyone can answer the following specific questions I would really appreciate it. If people add other questions in the comments, that would be great too!

  1. What is the best way to help the community?
  2. How can I "pull my weight"
  3. Is there a preferred way to allocate the funds in your wallet in order to help the community?
  4. How much Steem Power does it take for your vote to be worth .01 (at full voting power)?
  5. How about .02?
  6. Can you create too much content?
  7. If I see 50 good things in a day, should I vote for all 50 or does that make the votes meaningless?
  8. How can we make minnows feel valued?
  9. Am I asking the right questions?

Thumbs up for forward thinking :) I can tell you that I currently have about 15,600 steem power, and my vote is worth about $0.17 on a new post with no other upvotes. I think the relationship is super-linear though, so you can't just divide my steem power by 17 and get the right answer. I would have to double check. People have made some websites that try to estimate how much your vote is worth, but if I remember, they weren't really working correctly. As for a 'preferred' way to allocate your funds, I would say it's your personal preference on what you're looking for. If you want a pretty reliable ~10% interest, then you should hold steem dollars. If you want to build up your influence and the value of your own votes (and you don't mind your funds being less liquid) then you should hold Steem Power. You CAN create too much content. Currently if you post more than 4 main posts per day, the total rewards you receive on ALL of the posts will go down. This was implemented to reduce spam. 50 votes per day might be a little high. You can always check your voting power on steemd.com/@hanshotfirst and if it is getting low (for me <70% is low), then you might want to slow down your voting.

Also, you ARE asking the right questions! Keep it up!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thorough response. Wow 15,600! I'm a smaller minnow than I thought. But I'm trying! Honestly I'm not too worried about the interest. This is all found money for me. I might take a little out to buy my wife dinner (for putting up with me) but aside from that, I want it where it will have the most positive influence on the community. Seems Steem Power is still the answer to that one.

Steem Power is the answer to it.

Wow, very useful, I not know how to really check my voting power.

Here are my thoughts

  1. Various, find what works for you and remember its constantly changing, I change my "strategy" as often as weekly
  2. Stick around, add to the pot as much as you take out... the pot grows from usage.
  3. not for minnows
  4. it fluctuates, sometimes thousands
  5. dito
  6. yes... if its bad you hide the good content.. if its too good you take too much out of the pot.
  7. minnow votes are pretty much meaningless except for the feel good side effects... but when they are dog-piling on already high posts... then they are downright evil.... they push the post values up unreasonably high at the expense of all other authors for that day
  8. Socialise, help each other figure this marvelous social experiment out
  9. all questioning is right ;)

Thanks! These answers help tremendously. I think I need to print out #8 and put it by my computer. I need to remind myself that this is an experiment. It's not a finished product. I can't possibly know the "right" way, because there is no "right" way. It's constantly changing.

"I really want an answer to the question, but I don't know how to get it."
By expressing this, you are getting closer to finding the answers.

What is the best way to help the community?
Before you can truly help others, you've got to narrow down your own strengths. This is a lot like the airplane situation. Before strapping on an oxygen mask to your children, put the mask on yourself first.

How can I "pull my weight"
Ask yourself this question: what are you really, really good at and that you enjoy doing? (besides drugs, sex, etc.)

Is there a preferred way to allocate the funds in your wallet in order to help the community?
You need to refocus on your own needs first. Do you need cash or are you financially secure? If you are doing ok financially, then putting your funds into Steem Power is best. I usually go the route of using the 7 days, because it's easier for me to do so.

How much Steem Power does it take for your vote to be worth .01 (at full voting power)? I don't know.
How about .02? I don't know.

Can you create too much content?
Yes, you can. The better question to ask yourself is this: what else besides creating content can grow this platform? I'd answer this: write high-quality comments which support and encourage others (that's how I got a high rep score, which led to trust, which led to followers). I'd also advise doing some real-world outreach events, or parties. (I have yet to do this, but am planning to)

If I see 50 good things in a day, should I vote for all 50 or does that make the votes meaningless? I think it dilutes your vote....I try to focus more like on 20.

How can we make minnows feel valued?

Minnows need to focus their energy on cultivation of high quality comments, and create stronger bonds among each other. Also, try to reach out as much as possible, mentors are available to those with passion and a strong sense of ethics. You're doing good so far in asking questions and being sincere. I've just asked if I can be a mentor to someone recently, and this happened out of a natural progression of friendship....

Am I asking the right questions?
Yes. Just being vulnerable and asking questions is the right step. Learning and absorbing info is also good. I related to your story about @ned. I did the same thing in the beginning. I would focus on reaching out more, commenting more and treating Steemit like the real world of social creatures. We are all craving high quality engagement. Provide that for others and you will see how rewards can organically grow from that value.

Wow. Thank you for the incredibly thoughtful response. It has given me a lot to think about. I believe it all starts with being active, available and helpful. I think I can do that. Time to go think...

Keep going, you have good reputation score! :)

I will teach him patience!

hahahaahaha, you're so funny, whyyyy!??

Thank you very much for the encouragement! I'll keep grinding away.

Thanks!

Great post! Wish I would have read it first. "Earning Steem Power is the way you show everyone that you are invested in the success of the company." That helps tremendously. And I hope I did not come off as whining about how little influence I have. I understand why I have very little. I just wanted to know how I could use the little I have to help. Or if there are other ways to help. Helping others monetarily is the simplest and most concrete way. I'm just trying to figure out some others.

I'm starting in this social network as you, and the best thing at least I've found that can greatly help the community is:

  1. Be as natural as possible, enjoy each post and comments, vote for those who deserve it, learn from others and forget to get rich with steemit.
  2. Read and learn as much as you can about steemit and blockchain technology in general (I think that is the answer to many of the world's problems and eventually we live in a world based on it)
  3. Talk to my friends steemit

For me it is a little more difficult because I belong to the Spanish-speaking community (I'm from Venezuela) and the truth is that we are very few for now, but at the same time see it as an opportunity to contribute to the growth of our group . I sincerely believe that soon will be an important part.

Thanks for your great post!

Nice post!

your analogy make me to remind this one (minnow vote effect aganist whale)

Well played!

And I just reached my .01 goal! It just happened. After listening to the advice provided here, I converted to some more steam power... and actually gave a penny.

you see! now you strong enough! :) And to reign supreme there!

Great analogy @hanshotfirst! I think instead of posting for the money though just do it for fun and then the money will follow if people value your work and you do a good job. Think of the platform just as Facebook but with rewards, people post on Facebook for $0 dollars every second so even if you earn .01 it is still more then what you earn on Facebook.

Thanks acassity. The only part of the money that really concerns me is how I can use it to help steemit thrive. But I do get the point that I just need to chill and worry about eventually helping. I simply can't do much right now except try to provide content and help when I can.

4.You'll need at least about 500SP to see magic 0.01 )
3.An interesting question. I think any way is equally good for community, but probably not nessesery equally good for you)
If you are in doubt, you could just check Ned's wallet and just do it his way)

Thanks! For some reason, I think I am obsessed with this .01 thing. I think If I get there, I might relax a bit... or I might go crazy and try to get to .02 lol

As for your first question, maybe "helping the community " is to much weight indeed?
What if start to helping just a few? There's definitely some people around who might need some help or encouragement.
And one more hint, if apart of saying thanks you would upvote someones comment as well - it would a little bit encrease Reputation of the lucky one )

Agreed

You hit the nail right on the head! I have been trying to bite of more than I can chew. And I've been missing something obvious. I can use my votes to boost others' reputation scores. It's not as concrete as giving them a penny... but it definitely has value. Thanks!

I also have to say thank you, because your post inpired me to re-think "what am I doing here", with the result that some enlightning ideas came to my mind.

  1. Write more and better content.
  2. By creating more and better content.
  3. Don't worry about your wallet. You are a minnow not a whale yet.
  4. Don't vote on everything because you will drain your steem power. Especially if your content is only generating .0001
  5. Don't worry about voting. Worry about creating content.
  6. After four post within 24 hours you will be slowly penalized for each additional post.
  7. Don't vote on everything. Especially if your content is only generating .001
  8. You can't unless the way to generate steem power changes. Right now it favors blog gurus and bots. Trickle-down economics for the 1%
  9. No question is a bad question.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer these. In short, I need to chill and enjoy being the best darn minnow I can be. I need to embrace that.

This how you make it grow. Providing content that people want to see. People want magic bullet solution but sometimes it just takes a grind. That what most successful people understand.

Thanks. I can grind. I just want to make sure I'm grinding in the right direction.

Really good questions! I think everyone has basically the same questions. I don't know about the other questions but I do know how you can help the community the best.

Just keep on providing value. Through awesome original content, thoughtful comments, upvoting content that you like, helping out fellow minnows. It is easier said than done. But we will get there eventually :)

Thanks! I guess I'm just wondering if there is something else I can do to give back. Right now the answer seems to be to just be an active participant. We have enough chiefs, we need some good followers.

Good questions

Thank you all for your incredibly thoughtful responses. Thanks to the advice given here, I think I have a plan of attack (I'm a teacher... I MUST HAVE A PLAN!) I'm going to try and help new people by boosting their reputation through votes and providing any guidance and advice I can give. I am going to try and increase my Steem Power so I can support the site financially (although a relatively tiny amount) and hopefully toss a few pennies around. I am going to be active and contribute as much as I can.
