The site https://playground.steem.vc, made by @almost-digital, lets you play around with Steem APIs created by him using Typescript. The benefit of this is that you don't need to setup your own environment just to play around with his Steem APIs.
You can also write such programs with the official Python based Steem API. The documentation for Python based Steem APIs is available at http://steem.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html. From there, you can also see how to setup the environment on your own computer.
Have fun playing with Steem APIs guys. I would do so soon too.
