Hardfork19 - A catch 22 -why is the minnows voting less?

in steemit •  8 years ago

Since hardfork19 I read a lot of posts about this. After that first day or two when some of our posts made good money or at least much more than some that only made pennies, I think all Steemians were overjoyed. BUT THEN 3 days further down the line reality dawned on most of us.

Last night I read a post of @shayne where he is saying the minnows can't handle the power that was given to them. I don't think he understands our position although he says he is also a minnow, he is not making pennies on his posts.

I must confess the whole system made no sense to me at all. My vote was about .02 before hardfork19. After hardfork19 I saw it was 0.14c. Then I read I only have 10, 100% votes now. I quickly saw that if I vote a lot my voting power came down quickly. I say to myself, well this doesn't matter to me as previously my vote was only 0.2 so if my voting power come down to 0.8 it was still much more than before and on my happy way, I go on voting for all my followers that put up quality content. BECAUSE I now have 287 followers at least 50 must have quality posts, almost everybody put on some quallity content. HOW CAN I SUPPORT them with only 10 votes or maybe 20 votes.

BUT WAIT, then the real shock was when I found out the more my voting power decreases the longer it will take for it to be back at a 100% vote. If the vote decreased and would be restored maybe every 24 hours, this would not be such a big issue for me. But having to wait 3 days for it to be restored to 100% again that is just too long.

So I realize this is a catch-22 situation from where the minnows is in a bad place, feeling more confused than before hardfork19, I would rather go on as before.

  • "A catch-22 is a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules. ... Catch-22s
often result from rules, regulations, or procedures that an individual is subject to but has no control over because to fight the
    rule is to accept it."
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch-22_(logic)
With the one hand, you received a vote that is worth more and with the other hand the number of votes was taken away. This results in everyone getting less votes. I hope the people in charge will realize the problem and bring another hardfork to better this situation.

Not be able to upvote good content make me feel that I let my followers down. I use only one vote to vote for my post the first time I put it up and do not upvote my own comments. So that is my DEFENCE for all minnow's that is now accused of all sorts of things in different posts. I now sometimes can't upvote and would only comment on a post to show my support and if I think it is really good I resteem the post in the hope that my follower will get the votes they deserve.

But after all that is said and done, STEEMIT is still a wonderful, almost too good to be true platform. I just Steem on writing my blog everyday. I am so grateful to my followers and non-followers for upvoting my posts. I have to be honest, I do need the money and I am succeeding in earning some money. My account was worth almost $300 and I am in the process of cashing it out. Just wait for the bitcoin price to rise a bit. 6 Weeks ago I did not know anything about cryptocurrencies, bitcoin, wallets etc. Every day I learn something more and I am making friends with wonderful people from all over the world. So far even with the FORK that was thrown into the works, I am enjoying my STEEMIT JOURNEY. I will steem on and if I had only one UPVOTE it will goes to STEEMIT every time!! Thank you all STEEMIANS.

I agree, it really does put us between 'a rock and a hard place'. It hurts not to be able to upvote and support as many people as I'd like and to have to choose between upvoting more people but at a negligible amount, or voting only 10/day but at full power. Ten a day simply isn't enough to support the people I'm actively following, and to curate and support new people.

Even at 20% voting power per vote, your vote is worth more than it was before HF19. You're welcome to test this hypothesis out, but when it hit, 20% vote power per vote was well over 20c. Prior to that, 100% vote power per vote was 4c. At 20%, I can vote 50 times before the weight of my votes drops noticeably, and that's 10 more votes than I had prior to HF19.

You took the words out my mind perfectly. Great post!!!!

I am using the eSteem app for phone. which we can slide our voting power. not to full 100% but down to 25%, but i always check my voting worth in steemnow.
atleast i can stiill give 0.001 to the post I support.
that is my stategy.

thank you @ekavieka for your comment. Can you get this eSteem app on your laptop too?

unfortunately not, the app is for phone only.
they are working on PC app at the moment, hopely they can finish it soon.

thank you for your reply. Have a nice day further!

A really nice write up @hope777, and you've explained it all very well.👍

I like what you wrote, but I can't upvote you because I have depleted my voting power.😢👎

hahaha thank you for your comment, you made my day, I needed that laugh!

You're welcome @hope777.👌🤗

You can still upvote. Every upvote increases post visibility, even at 0% voting power.

I'm just getting used to having voting power be a lower percentage most of the time. My vote now at 30-40% is still worth more than it was at 80%-100%.

Thank you @doule, I appreciate your comment. I think that is maybe the only way to go.

Yes we are really stuggling to upvote all our followers

Thank you for your comment @bigbear. At least we are all in the same boat. :-) or swimming in the same waters!

If you can resteem my post I will be grateful @bigbear.

Hi @hope777 my voting power is permanently on 35 % it seems. I am still upvoting good content like normal. Remember that we now have 7 days for posts to be upvoted, so if you find good content, you can upvote later. That is what I do at this stage. I make a list and then when the vp is restored I go and upvote.

Thank you @giantbear for your advice and tips. You are a star!!!

Still learning on this site..thanks for sharing your opinions and journey!

You're welcome @dianadee, let's just steem on!

I can't wait 3 days, people pump out good content every day. I will keep voting, commenting and resteeming all the same. However, your strategy to comment or resteem instead of upvoting is a healthy balance too

Thank you for your comment @kubbyelizabeth. I feel like just voting and voting and depleting all. But I know I should not for then it will take 3 days to go up again.

I still don't fully understand the voting system but posts like this makes it clearer. Thanks

There is also a lot I don't understand. I tried to just put it plain and simple as I came to experience it. Thank you for your kind comment!

Great post. Im currently rebuilding my voting power or I would upvote you. I have resteemed and followed.

Adjust your voting power as you go on. Your 20% weighted vote is still worth more now than your 100% votes used to be.

I feel the same as you it is much too long for the power to go back up it means you can not vote for your followers the way you want to I hope they change this.

There seems to be a lot of confusion going around about voting percentages and voting power, so I'm going to clear that up:
You do not only have 10 100% powered votes.
Voting weight has been adjusted thanks to the HF19, such that your "100%" powered votes are now worth 2% of your total voting power. The 100% number comes from the slider bar that pops up when you go to vote. So, rather than 100% on the sliding bar being equivalent to something like .25% of your total voting power, it's now worth 2%.

This, of course, has some benefits and drawbacks. On the plus side, your first 10 votes will have dramatically more impact than before because you're using more voting power, so you're having more of an impact. However, after those first ten votes, (or below 80% of your voting power) your impact decreases significantly. This doesn't mean it disappears; it's simply less.

IIRC, below a certain amount of Steem Power, the upvote button doesn't display a slider simply because you don't have enough vested Steem to impact posts in a way that is visible. Without getting too technical, every upvote counts for some positive motion in voter rewards, but not all of them are visible through the website we all use. Once you have enough vested Steem, or Steem Power, though, you can adjust how much weight your vote has. Simply adjust the slider to use less of your voting power each vote, and you can more evenly distribute your impact.

Case in point, my fully-powered vote at 100% of my voting power is worth around $1. Before, it was worth around $0.04. Since my voting power decreases much faster if I only use 100% powered votes, I have adjusted my voting weight to only use 20% of my voting power. I can vote on 20+ posts daily and my voting power doesn't drop below 96%, which still gives me some leeway to pump my vote power up to 100% on really stellar posts.

Thank you for your detailed explanation, I really appreciate it. Maybe you can resteem :-) so that lots more people will see your explanation. I will only be able to adjust my voting weight when I have enough Steem Power and that will still be a way off.

Words out of my head. I'm having issues with the less votes I could cast so I don't hit to 0 on my voting power. And I can't not vote on a post if I find it helpful or entertaining so it's been a hard struggle. All I can do is aim for the minimum SP required for a slider to pop up :|

Thank you for your comment!

I hope777 as you probably know when you get to 500 steem power you can adjust your voting strength. I think that maybe and only maybe they want to get people to put money in so as to reach that 500. I converted all my steem to steem power as my quest is to reach 500 without putting in money from my own pocket. However with only about 100 steem power left to go it will take time. I will then be able to vote at least 40 times a day again and support those I was supporting in the past. However as I have some spare ones now and again I will be returning some upvotes. 👍😊

Yes I know about the steem power I need my SBD so I can convert to steem. Just building my sp up over time. Thank you for your extensive comment!
