My Rant on Poor Content on SteemIt + I'd Like to Follow Quality Users

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

So the above photo is sometimes how I feel when I'm trying to browse around for new intriguing content to read.

Sadly, I don't find much good content easily (not always as there are great users on here).

UPDATE: Literally seconds after having posted this rant, of course, 3 people (most likely bots) commented here ... shows the small problems with the fake commenting on SteemIt.

I'll be honest, and this has been mentioned several times by other SteemIt users:

There is SO much shit content out here.

I'm trying my best to find some good written content around SteemIt. But it's hard to find anything new.

When I click on the "new" posts tab via SteemIt, and everything I click on is some useless, poorly written piece of garbage, or simply copied and pasted from another website into here.

I don't get it ... are some people that desperate to try to get as many upvotes?

Does one think  you can get many upvotes by just only posting a video, or regurgitating content elsewhere will work?

Doesn't work like that.

Piece of advice if you are NEW to SteemIt: Don't write crap content. Period.

Also if you are going to comment on other people's post, don't just write two or three word comments like:

Thanks for the info
Awesome info! Thanks
Love your blog!
Thanks for sharing

That's super annoying and also exhibits the "I need attention" kind of deal.

Sorry if this isn't the area to rant, but I just felt like I needed to rant.

In any case, for any SteemIt users who will be posting QUALITY content especially in the:

Travel, Food, Arts, Surf, and Design categories, I'd LOVE to follow you.

Comment below with a link to a post that is your most interesting and I'll check it out, and if I love it, I'll follow :)

Sort Order:

On any public platform poor content is bound to be published, especially when there is money involved. There are many who want to earn a quick cent or two - which is what a generic one-line comment can get sometimes.

So what could be possible solutions? To start with, upvote good content so that the rest fades away on its own. A second solution could be to create as much good content as possible - given each individual's time and propensity to expend effort. I think these two things alone can make a big difference.

Clicking on the "new" tab above and scrolling down the list of posts is an opportunity to separate the wheat from the chaff. So let's make the best of it.

And also, let's try to flag spam content. It is first time we can really influence spammers! Do not be afraid to flag!

Your point was made as most of the comments below are generic and have nothing to do with your post.

if you are up for it, you can turn your frustration into some value for the community. Be a curator for great content. The fact is that there is crap content out there in every platform AND most people are just doing the best that they can.

Just two cents to let you know I read your post and appreciate what you brought.

So far, you are the ONLY human being that has posted something a "human" would write.

And for that, thank you (also of course, the worthy upvote). Like no joke, so hard to find "real" people who will read and comment on posts. Yes, I've been thinking about curating content. Is it simply "Resteeming" good posts?

Nice to meet you @Hustletoparadise ! Welcome to the steemit community ! Take care, @digital-gypsy

Oh, man, I feel you @hustletoparadise. Looking through the "new" tab always makes me lose a little faith in humanity because it mostly reflects two things:

  1. Most people these days are just lazy and greedy and want instant results with minimal effort.
  2. A lot of people have zero imagination or creativity to craft an even half-decent post.

Sometimes is both!

I have encountered tons of shitposts that consist of a single meme image or embeded video copied from somewhere else, without a single line of commentary or anything. Or posts that seem written by an unintelligent six year old, that read more like a FB status than a post for Steemit. On the other hand, sometimes I find something that looks like a nicely written, interesting article, and just when I am about to get excited I find Cheeta's message in the comments indicating it was stolen from somewhere else. Ugh.

Anyway, I think I can go for hours, but I'll stop! I am also looking for users with quality articles to follow (like yourself), and I would like to think that I am one of those Steemians that try to put more effort into producing valuable content, so perhaps you might want to take a look ;-) Here's a link to some of my articles:

Cheers! And sorry about this novel of a comment...

I totally feel the same way. Especially the part when I scroll to the bottom of the comments section to see Cheeta's message saying they found similar content elsewhere on the web haha. That irritates me.

But I'm glad you feel the same way, because at times when I'm on STEEM, it gets a bit irritating haha.

It is as you describe, but I think the increasing proportion of mediocre (to say the least) content is quite normal and inevitable in fact. The challenge is to find the pearls that are hidden in the bulk of posts and I would wish we would have some more options to filter the different feeds. In the absence of intelligent filters I recommend to take the time building yourself a quality home feed. A good starting point to speed up populating your home feed is to check for the resteemed posts in those blogs that you are already following for good reason.
And most importantly, upvote the content that you like to see more of.

Cheers,
Shaka

@saka great advice. Right now, following people you find interesting is the best way to see content you actually want to see. I use the home button often!

@hustletoparadise I hear ya! I'm an artist, and I'm always looking for other creatives to follow :)

I'm finding the same problem. I think a good solution is for us to band together and find each other through these rants. I wrote an article for these new people in hopes they will read it and change. https://steemit.com/unnecessariat/@whytehorse/steemit-the-rise-of-the-unnecessariat

I understand your concern and agree with some of the other commenters. Maxabit said that the money messes things up and I agree but it's also what makes the platform great. Agreed something needs to be done about poor content but everyone has a right to contribute if it's original... Lets hope people improve their skills and learn that the better their writing / pics and content, the more people will follow and support with an upvote!

Welcome to Steem @hustletoparadise I have upvoted and sent you a tip

Whilst I think what makes a post quality or not is highly subjective. I do agree with what you mean. I know steemit is in beta but I think it has to get better at discoverability, to make it easier for us all to discover great content no matter whether it has been written by a new user or steemit pro.

Tbh though I think some people in the community have kind of created a rod for their own backs. People have been selling Steemit as a social network similar to Facebook really hard. So we can't really be surprised when these new users jump on the platform and treat Steamit like Facebook.

It takes a bit of digging sometimes, I hope you brought a shovel!

Yes more like a Caterpillar industrial size shovel, than a small garden shovel haha

nice post..
upvote and follow back please

Hello @hustletoparadise. Welcome to Steemit. I am David. I wish you have a happy journey here.

I totally agree with you. I was just talking about how I'm missing all the great stuff on here because there is just so much poorly written content. I'll spend an hour writing a post and it gets pushed down so fast because of the rate that new articles are being posted.

I don't know how good my articles are because some of them are only receiving 8 views. There needs to be some way to sort through all of this.

I upvoted and followed you. You can check me out @legosnjoysticks.

Hi @Hustletoparadise its good to see more Steemians around. Have fun in this community. I wish you many followers and new friends :-) Cheers @chrisx

Nice post, totaly agree with you there, it's sad to see bots every where but with more people, the good content will get up, you can check out slovenia for example :) Thanks for sharing hope posts will get better, also looking for car enthusiastic posts that are rere here #keepsteemin

Hey man... I can understand your arguments... I think I'm the first mannequin here in Steemit, and I'm trying to share my stories... I hate copy and paste, and all these bots too! Have a great day! Steemitri the mannequin ;-) P.S. I can't surf :-(

I know the feeling! Come and see what I've got up my sleeve. My latest is this one - https://steemit.com/motivation/@adambarratt/tony-robbins-tells-the-rocky-story-classic-video and I've also got Jim Carrey, TED Talks, Will Smith, Bruce Lee and a Spanish volunteer program covered so far ;)

You've been UpVoted via the UpVote Experiment 002 Bot. Depending on my VP & the price of STEEM you should get a $.01-$.03 for your trouble.
Read more about this experiment here.

Thank You - @blueorgy

I'm a huge hater of non-engaging, spamming contents.

By the way, the spammers might not've been bots. There are actually people that sit around copying and pasting those garbage comments, as well as some that just type it over and over again. (I wish I was kidding.)

Best thing to do about those guys? Check their comments to make sure they do it a lot. Check their posts (if they even have any, they'll likely be obviously stolen), then go report them to @steemcleaners either by posting the link in the @steamcleaner's linkdrop chat on Steemit.Chat, or by posting a summary and link to the user you're reporting on one of their report posts. You can even get rewards for reporting them! (If you go look in my wallet, I was rewarded by them a few minutes ago.)

One of the problems I see people having with finding good content they want to follow is they just want original content but don't want to know the person making it. I've seen a lot of whining about not caring about the person's life or whatever, and just wanting more of the usual original content and nothing personal.

The way I feel about it, is that if you don't like learning about the person themselves, or hate when someone posts something that's actually personal and about their life, don't follow them. Because we're all people on here. These are blogs. Blogs aren't exclusively articles people write and such. They're also journals.

I'll stop rambling on now.

I hope you find more content creators that you like. Good luck, and have a great day!

Welcome and Thank You for being with us!! Following your Blog now

Welcome and Thank You for being with us!! Following your Blog now

Wading through the posts that are interesting looks potentially something of a chore...I can see that after only a couple of days. Still, there also appears to be much of interest popping up amongst the low quality stuff...and I hope to make decent contributions to that. If you're using 'Arts' to cover the entire creative sphere, then I hope to make more posts in the categories of 'writing', 'novels', etc.

The key of success for everyone here is the power of your vote

Upvote and follow and comments other to make there feelings express and be heard with everybody

Do the same guys ;)

Welcome to the community, Hustletoparadise!! Wish you much luck! Cheers! Follow me at @khunpoom

Welcome to this amazing community!! Followed. Follow me back 😘

Hi again, lurking your posts. I just realized the same. Kinda glad I'm not the only one. Was browsing the "new" in the travel category and was a bit shocked at all the... questionable content I found. I'll be posting about the nomadic lifestyle, maybe we'll entertain each other :)

Yes right? There's so much junk content that it's at times hard to find good quality readings.

That being said, I've found the easiest way is to follow trust-worthy people. And in turn, I find quality people to follow by checking out their followers.

Look forward to reading up on your future posts as well. Followed :)
